I think he tried Genia, then went back to Phipps. Genia just doesn't fit the Cheika gameplan. He might have at his best, but he seemed to have a short time at his best.

Even when he was at his best, when he had a bullet pass, he was a thinker at the base. Phipps may be a relative bonehead, but that means his three brain cells don't get in the way of his clearance, whereas Genia's ten brain cells do. If there was ever a rugby metric for flapping the arms, Will would have it sewn up.

When Will does finally pass, his passing is better. At least he can hit the side of a Quade Cooper from twenty meters.

If we could mate Genia and Phipps we'd have a halfback for the ages. Fast to the breakdown. Instantaneous bullet pass. Brutal defence. Sniping tries from inside our own half. And fabulous arm-flapping for when the ref is minded to give us a sympathy penalty late in the game.
Here's the team from the world cup final.

1. Scott Sio (15 Tests)

2. Stephen Moore (c) (101 Tests)

3. Sekope Kepu (62 Tests)

4. Kane Douglas (23 Tests)

6. Scott Fardy (29 Tests)

7. Michael Hooper (vc) (50 Tests)

8. David Pocock (54 Tests)

The first two players chosen should be the locks. If we cannot compete in lineouts the Dodgers will kill us.

Rather have Toby Smith at reserve THP than Faulkner, whose efforts lately haven't been stellar imo.

Coleman could well get a chance this year, but he's up against quite a few who seem to be at a similar level. Not much at all between Coleman, Arnold, Carter and Neville. As far as the future is concerned, I think Staniforth will overtake them all, and Enever is also likely to come into contention as well. Staniforth has by far the most 'mongrel' in his play, while Enever I think carries the ball better than any of them. Maybe not this year for them, but so long as the Brumbies wake up and start them they will quickly come into contention.

Think there will be massive changes in numbers from the starting RWC side based on form, injury and players being overseas

Positions 1, 3, 4, 9, 10 ,11, 12 and 14

The others are definites

Enever and Staniforth are the best of this crop of locks.

They'll be our locks in 2019.

That's particularly ambitious. Simmons and Douglas will only be 30 at RWC 2019.

They're then competing with the likes of Coleman and Skelton, who're starting at other sides, but also the Carter and Arnold at the Brumbies themselves.

From what I've seen, both are good enough to do so (Particularly Staniforth, whom I enjoyed watching since the 2014 U20s WC), but face a massive uphill battle.

And from that starting lineup I'm going to call the following as locked in for the first test against England:

1. Scott Sio (15 Tests)

2. Stephen Moore (c) (101 Tests)

5. Rob Simmons (59 Tests)

6. Scott Fardy (29 Tests)

7. Michael Hooper (vc) (50 Tests)

10. Bernard Foley (26 Tests)

13. Tevita Kuridrani (30 Tests)

15. Israel Folau (37 Tests)

Holmes will most certainly start at TH prop with Slipper and TPN remaining on the bench...........

It will be interesting to see if Cheika sticks with his remaining locks from the RWC squad (Mumm, Skelton, Carter) or goes with somebody new (Arnold, Coleman).........

I haven't really kept up with Genia's status, but I would assume Cheika would most likely go with Phipps to start at this stage...........

With wing stocks so low Horne will most definitely reclaim the left wing..........

Beale was favoured over To'omua to replace Giteau early in the RWC final, and I don't see any reason why he won't go with him to start at 12 against England based on current form.........

That doesn't leave a lot of options for the other wing spot, so unless he's going to rush someone back from overseas, he's going to have to blood someone new and I don't see any worthwhile candidates outside of DHP.

Just think of the worst combination of those two.

Is Genia Icarus in disguise?

I love it when people claim that players yet to lock down (no pun intended) a Super Rugby starting position are going to be our starting locks at the next RWC.

Although we seem to have a good number of locks in contention for the Wallabies atm, most of them are simply not at the standard of either NZ or Saffa second rows. I would be more than happy to see a couple of the very new comers show they are better than the likes of Simmons and Carter. I don't even rate Mumm or Skelton. So in the immediate future, Douglas, Arnold and Coleman look to have the inside running if we want to add a bit of fire to our second row, but longer term I wouldn't be surprised if both Staniforth and Enever also come to the fore. We certainly need to get a bit more aggression into the second row if we want to see improvement around the ground imo.

I really don't want to see Simmons and Carter locked in as our RWC locks in 2019 if they continue to play as they have been.

If we were looking at form as it is right now, I think we'd see Slipper start at LHP and Sio on the bench, but that can change. The second lock after Simmons is a tough one, for mine it would be Timani, I don't think any of the others are demanding to be selected. Phipps will be 9, and at this point Beale would have to be in front of To'omua for 12. I would expect Kuridrani to retain 13, particularly in light of Kerevi's injury, and Folau to remain at 15. Horne will be one wing, DHP the other. Moore, Holmes, Simmons, Fardy, Hooper, Pocock & Foley are certainties.

Really hard to find a back-up THP, will Weekes be fit? If not, I don't know, maybe Alalatoa or Talaki? Carter to cover lock, McMahon to cover the back row (given Timani can move to 8 if necessary), Stirzacker, To'omua and Hunt the rest of the bench.

Ala'alatoa plays at LH.........

I doubt Timani is on the radar.

You may be right about Timani, but I don't know why. He's got more go-forward than any other lock in Aus right now, his hands have improved dramatically, and they're starting to us him in the lineout.

My mistake re Ala'alatoa, Mike was the THP. What ideas do you have for a back-up THP, because I'm struggling.

Alan played tighthead for the U20s ahead of Robertson who's now startingat the Tahs.

Weeks will be back next weekend apparently, the reports are that he, Harris, Inman, English, and Timani will all be fit for the game against the Brumbies.
