The Wallabies Thread

To'omua started at 12 and played 67 mins and TPN around half an hour in the second half while getting pumped by Nic White's Exeter 40-6.

So back on the plane for those guys. Think it'd be pretty unlikely that we'll see either of them in the starting team this week given they will only be back training with the Wallabies tomorrow after a couple of weeks away. Maybe for Argentina.

It would be foolish anyway. The flight back from Europe really knocks you around.

In the Rugby Paper (UK rugby press) apparently Cheika is trying to sign Skelton for next season.

As always, I welcome quality coming back to Aus. Lord knows the Tahs need second rowers who can do more than jump in a lineout. But if the Wallabies need someone with bulk, a running game, and proven ability when disrupting a maul, then we should be picking Matt Philip or Rory Arnold. As an added bonus, both of them last 80 minutes as a rule, not as an exception.

God help us

Before you start wringing your hands, he was player of the match for saracens this week after losing a load more weight

Holy shit. Thought that was him posing with a winger.

It's like one of those BUPA 'healthier you' ads.

He is still 120kgs

According to Nick Mullins, Skelton has dropped 12kg over the summer, bringing to 21 the total numbers of kilos lost by the lock since his arrival at the London club.
Skelton at his heaviest was somewhere in the mid 140kgs, so that puts him approximately between 120kg and 130kg presently.
And his weight cut appears to be paying dividends. Indeed his remarkable workrate with ball-in-hand and at the breakdown had commentators’ tongue wagging and he duly picked up the man of the match award against the Falcons.
In an post-match interview with BT, forwards coach Alex Sanderson even commented that Skelton’s torso was noticeably different, with his pectoral muscles now distinct from his tummy and not ‘one big mass’.

Yeah, he looked great but more importantly his workrate (while on) was exceptional. At least briefly, he looked like the player he long threatened to be. He bends the line, hauls in the defence and seems to have given up trying to throw miracle passes.

He has (or had) the ability, but just did not quite make the grade. I think he needed to develop a bit of mental toughness. Hope he can fulfill his early promise, I thought he could have been a world class 6.

Jones would be in contention. Seems like RA is leaving no stone unturned for this RWC.
Bordeaux president Laurent Marti wouldn't officially confirm the news in France but did air his frustrations about Australians leaving their contracts early or asking for releases.
Will big Will 2.0 be next - unrecognisable on the right in the pic above!

Luke Jones was there or thereabouts 3-4 years ago. Good player when he got his 3 wallabies caps but wasn't quite a nailed on test starter with Fardy in front of him.

Jones is more developed and a better option now. I think Ned Hanigan will improve too with more seasons under the belt, but he got more caps before being ready to step up.

take it from someone who knows. The easiest way to lose weight is be extremely overweight to start with.

It's like those BBQ cleaners that say "for best results, start with a clean BBQ".

Yeah, there was a comment re one of the Tahs (somewhere) saying that the best dietician in the world can't stop someone stopping at a KFC drive thru on the way home from training

We have a good number quality locks. Skelton’s work ethic and commitment was questioned alongside his fitness.
No need for anyone to chase him. If he wants to return to Super rugby then good luck to him.
Luke Jones on the other hand could be what we need in the backrow. He was given a baptism of fire, too early I might add, and then chucked on the scrap heap.

The more aussies that break contracts the more clubs will think twice about signing.

It's a two sided coin, though. Players still want to be able to get those contracts.

Australia seems to be going for broke for getting players back through broken contracts.

If it doesn't pay off, they might really go broke.
