The Wallabies Thread

My wife actually asked me last night if I thought that the Reds 10 would play for the Wobbs this year. She is a pretty astute student of the game.

I told her that he probably wouldn't, because he has already signed to play in the NH. But in these strange times, who knows?

And this is the problem when a player is seen to have a mortgage on a jersey - why would another 10 give up the option of a lucrative contract overseas for the slim chance that they might get a look in ahead of Foley? Probably same with a few other positions that should be shaken up too.

If we are going off the form of the last three games can we just drop all the Brumbies and Tahs?

Also, what's the point of listing Naisarani at 8, he can't play for us.

Because the other Aussie 8's are Mafi(Japanese capped), Holloway(doesn't warrant selection) and Timu(already included in the team).
As I said, its a selection of form players, rather then a selection of a team and combinations. He mightn't be eligible yet, but i'm still going to acknowledge his form, after all this is the 'Wallabies 2016 and onwards thread'.

Until this year Foley was quite obviously the best choice.

So far this year Foley is looking to be dead last.

Ok, time for some contention. A Wallabies XV based purely on Super Rugby form in 2018 and the position they have been playing in.

1. Slipper

2. Uelese

3. Tupou

4. Phillip

5. Arnold

6. Timu

7. Hooper

8. Naisarani

9. Genia

10. Lance

11. Naivalu

12. Kerevi

13. English

14. Maddocks

15. Folau

16. Faulkner

17. BPA

18. Ainsley

19. Douglas

20. Hanigan

21. Foley

22. Hodge

23. Feauai-Sautia

*Please don't read too much into the combinations, its just a selection of form players, rather then the selection of a team.

I'd agree but Hanigan doesn't deserve to be in an extended squad. Work rate with zero effect doesn't warrant selection.

How the hell is the best lock in Australia by a country mile not in that squad ?

No doubt guys like Coleman, Kuridrani, Sio and Foley will be some of the first picked come June, but are they the form players in their respective positions for 2018? No they aren't..

I honestly haven't seen that, I think he may have been carrying that injury for the first two games.

He has played less then two whole games, but in those two games his run meters, tackle busts, ruck involvements and tackles are far less then his own lock partners, let alone the other Aussie locks in the comp. Rebels line out has been going reasonably well, but Philip is the primary target. He doesn't have the same Wallabies profile and bring different attributes, but I think his teammate Mat Philip has outplayed Coleman so far in 2018.

We have pretty orite depth at Lock right now. Not quite England '5 world class locks on the bench' levels but Coleman, Arnold bros, Matt Phillip, Rodda, Tui.

S'not bad.

I guess you could also add the low impact high workrate blokes like Douglas, Enever....... Simmons

We're three games into the season. Clearly if guys like Foley, Kuridrani etc. don't improve their form as we get closer to June their positions will come under a lot more scrutiny.

The reality is that this happens every year for a bunch of players and the form between February and May fluctuates substantially. Some of the guys who have started the season with a bang will be back in the pack by May and not really in the frame for Wallabies selection.

What is certain is that form in February/March counts far less than form in April/May.

I'd add, BH, that Kiwi players a notorious for being a bit shite/phoning it in for the Super season and then rocking up come test time and it's business as usual. People like Carter, Reid, etc spring to mind.

He certainly deserved to be in or around the 23. I also think there were quite a few people saying as much on these forums. I remember thinking he should at the very least be brought in as a back-up 10 to Foley if Quade was not in the frame. Particularly as i am not sold on Hodge as a 10.

Completely agree with you TOCC. But if we were actually choosing the team right now, Coleman would be my first pick lock.

Of course that doesn’t change a very interesting discussion as form. Well done bloke!
