Cheika after Bled 1: “Our defence wasn’t good enough at all,” Cheika said. “It’s not attitude, it’s maybe just that little bit of doubt creeps in. When something goes against you early and you have been preparing a certain way, in creeps a little bit of doubt.”. Hooper: “At 50 points down, we had to believe in ourselves,” he said. “Some guys really stood up to the challenge. But it was a new defensive system and against a quality team we struggled. We’ll be looking to rectify that.” http://www.theaustralian.com.au/spo...s/news-story/7ca45ceb46be7bd0017da4cf624ed2d8

KOB, in the first place there is a very heavy implication in Cheika's words that the players were at fault, not him nor Grey. Then, what new system is Hooper talking about? One that allows the opposition to have a two man overlap whenever they choose to run the ball wide? What's new about that?

Not wanting to let the players and coaches off but here is an alternative Wallaby team of eligible players who didn't tour.

15 Israel Folau
14 Taqele Naiyaravoro
13 Sefa Naiavalu
12 Duncan Paia'aua
11 Dane Haylett-Petty
10 Quade Cooper
9 Michael Ruru/Jake Gordon
8 David Pocock
7 Richard Hardwick
6 Jack Dempsey
5 Rory Arnold
4 Izack Rodda
3 Jermaine Ainsley
2 Tolu Latu
1 James Slipper

All of whom have been apart of the Wallaby squad this year (other than Pocock)

I’ll concede that I didn’t pick a very good example in my haste, barbarian is obviously a far superior googler to me. However, I picked it because he is basically saying ‘our defense was shite’, implying he was part of the problem. I don’t think he is explicitly blaming the players though, nor the system.

Hooper on the other hand is clearly blaming the system, and their understanding of it. What does it matter what the system was? we were looking for examples of admitting there were problems with it, that was the point of the exercise.

Wallabies Team v Scotland

VS a team of other players not selected for various reasons

1. Slipper 2. Uelese 3. Ala'alatoa
4. Coleman 5. Arnold
6. Fardy 8.Dempsey 7. Pocock
9. Powell 10. Quade 11. Naivalu 12. To'omua 13. Horne 14. DHP 15. Folau
16. Hanson 17. Smith 18. Ainsley 19. Skelton 20. Higs/Gill 21.Ruru 22. JOC (James O'Connor) 23. Tomane

I think that team would win tbh. They would sure as hell be better defensively and more dominant in and around the ruck.

I can see what you are doing so this isn’t a snipe, but if you are going to select an alternate team and then claim it to be superior, I think you at least need to select it from players who are actually available. If all those players were available the team that played Scotland would have been vastly different.

I was being less critical and moreso bumping around in my head: happy about our depth, but sad about injuries to key players, frustrated with some selection decisions but aware that many quality players are overseas. I think the problem in the backs is a selection problem with kerevi and kuridrani, but I think the breakdown efforts are an injury and availability problem with the lack of bigger bodies in coleman, arnold, skelton, and breakdown men like fardy and pocock. Wish everyone was always available, in australia and never injured...then I could far more easily complain about selections!

So since real rugby is over it's time for wild speculation:

I think by RWC19 we'll have the best front row in the world.

1. Sio
2. Uelese
3. Kepu

16. Slipper
17. Tatafu
18. AAA

When does To'omua's contract finish in the UK? I would have my sights set on bringing him back if I was Rugby Australia. Probably the only useful thing the ARU/RA have done in recent memory has been getting Koroibete to come over, would be good if they could get To'omua home as well.
So he could sit on the bench for another cup.. I just don't think he cracks the first team even though I think he should

I'm kinda hoping by then Mike Ala'alatoa will be in Aus vying for a spot

i suspect 5 A's will be playing for the AB's by then
Don't know where I read it but I think the NZRU agreed not to pursue MA in exchange for the early release of Tyrrell Lomax. In any case it would be weird to wear a Wallabies jersey in public if you're hoping to play for the Allblacks.
