I like Carter, the bloke has character and is guts and all for the team. He has been pretty good so far this year. Awesome tonight. I worried when Waugh retired I that wouldn't have that "bloke I love to hate" in the Tahs anymore.
Hope he is fully fit for the last round at Lang park. All this type of stuff just makes the game that much better.

nope, cos he is a good player.
both QLD and NSW play a vastly different style of game, QLD employ a long pass and cut out the centres alot more than NSW, therefore T.Cart has to get through a ton more hard work on occasion. The centres for QLd are used as decoy far more often, therefore most defences hang off them and allow them extra space that allows them to look like they are superstars when at the moment (and i say that cos Ben is still young and can still become a better player) i dont think any of them are world beaters.
Carter is a fantastic Super Rugby player that is knocked with vigour cos people believe he isnt good and get embarrased when he runs rings around them.

Well I guess he's a back so he should be compared with any back who was picked in the Wallabies rather than just a player who plays in a position that requires a different skill set but shares a word in its name. I suppose if you want to give it an international tone you could call him a "second 5/8" and compare him with JOC (James O'Connor), QC (Quade Cooper), Barnes or a "Centre 3/4" and compare him with a "wing 3/4" and you could compare him to a half, add a 5/8 and he'd be 112.5% the player he is.
I happen to like Finger, and Carter annoys me, but no one could suggest that Finger covered himself in glory in NZ.....or will they?

I think some people are missing the point of Moses' posting this. As he said, the perception of many on these sites, that Carter is a club level plodder, who, even worse, is a batfisted fucktard (thanks to Sully, my new favourite term of derision) as far as opposition teams and fans go, is at odds with his stats.
Now sure, we all now that stats don't tell everything. But I reckon Super Rugby coaches look at them quite a bit, especially ones regarding tackles made, tackles missed, metres gained, tries scored and so on.
Of course, not all 12s are the same, so not all will have the same set of data to compare. But if a guy makes such a high percentage of tackles, makes good metres with the ball, and that type of player fits the team, then his stats speak volumes.
As for the fucktard thing, if coaches were worried about that, rather than what good the player does for the team, we'd see lots of notable players being dropped - Cooper, Higgers, Bakkies, Ali Williams, Cowan and so on.
You see, I reckon a lot of posters choose to hate him because of his on-field persona, then try to make the leap that he is actually poor at what he does from a rugby point of view, where clearly, he is not.
Personally, I have watched him up close with team-mates and fans, and he is very popular, happy to talk to anyone, and seems a decent enough bloke.

Stats can be made to be very misleading. When comparing Taps and Carter ; Carter played double the time hence his stats are greater than Taps, if you double them you will find they are very similar. Bare in mind also that it was Taps debut season and the Reds play a vastly different game to the Tahs and its a pretty good effort by him. And while Carter is good at what he does (gain metres and effort areas) many people would say Taps offers more attacking threats....
With Carter vs Fainga'a... number of tackles is fairly similar but consider Qld put more teams to the sword last year and probably held the ball longer and of course he will make less tackles. And what constitutes a tackle ? Rugby League players use to complain about Nathan Hindmarsh getting inflated stats because he was regularly third man in- could Carter or Fainga'a do this? and what about dominant tackles? in true stats these are counted because they can be game changes and infulence a games momentum. Who made the most of these? and with missed tackles on the stats sheet the man who runs 50m across field to make a improbable tackle gets punished on the sheet while the guy who said "i cant get there" doesnt get punished is this fair? ditto the man who attempts a dominant tackle in order to change a game

I guess, as far as tackles go, the 12 channel is a pretty constant line of attack, so the defensive abilities of 12s will largely, but not completely, reflect how well they defend that important channel. The further out you go, the harder it becomes, as play will be less structured, I would think.
