Hey fellas,

Not sure if this is already a thread but I thought considering the varying ages of many of us, that it might be an interesting exercise to see which pre-match ritual scares the living hell out of you the most and who in your opinion is the best(scariest) leader of them.

Obviously most suggestions are going to be based around the All Blacks and their Haka so I'm going to start it off with Tana Umaga.

Youtube links would be much appreciated, wouldn't worry about embedding them as anyone who is reading this can probably be bothered to either a) search it or b) click the link.

My favourites involve Tana Umaga. What a warrior. It's the rings under his eyes that do it for me, terrifying.

It might just be me, but the ones who get the most into it are the ones with Maori blood- Tana, Weepu, Mealamu just seem slightly more passionate than the others. Not saying the others are uninterested, just that not to the extent of the natives.

Swarley - just a slight correction, Tana and Mealamu are Samoan heritage, not Maori. But yeah you can't fault their passion and commitment when they've performed the haka.

I liked it when Rico Gear led the haka.

Has to be Tana leading the Kapa O Pango for the first time (2005?) against S.A.
(sorry no link. Typing on my iphone and I'm having trouble getting a link from YouTube.) type Kapa O Pango and umanga and you'll find it.

Also NZ maori in the Pacific nations cup a few years ago was v.good and very long!

edit: here is the video of Tana.

Reckon the Wallabies should take on the Aborigine Emu dance - that'd scare the shit out of the Blacks (All)

Dont know about scariest but each of the PI nations have very entertaining war dances. My favourite is probably the Samoan one.

Tonga v Blacks pre games war dances at 03 world cup was very special.

I loved that Welsh response to the Haka. Felt it was very respectful, but made a point.

Long live the Haka!

Funny that only one of them actually advanced, but good to see he dragged the Irish team with him. Fair to say if this happened today most people would find it disrespectful.

its great, always makes me wish the all blacks had advanced as well though, eye to eye.

i find the new haka disrespectful, not just for the slash across the throat but the fact that the other team gives them respect by allowing them to do it, they should stick with the original or not do it at all.

Anyone who criticises team for responding to the haka is precious. I hope that if we play nz in the world cup the team walks to the half way line mid-haka. Would be so awesome.

I also liked the bit in Rod Mcqueen's book about how he use to make his team get in a huddle and go over the game plan after the haka had finished, just to delay the kick off that extra minute or two.

The best thing the Wobblies ever did was have John Williamson lead the crowd in 'Waltzing Matilda' after the Haka, that would always get the Aussie crowd going and took the edge off the Haka I thought. ARU ruined however by getting shit commercial singers do it that the crowd couldn't relate to.

Would love to see it happen again sometime this tri-nations.

To illustrate my point:

For my money, the haka peaked somewhere between Carlos Spencer and Tana Umaga. These days it goes on longer than the Romanian National Anthem, and there's too many rules about how you are allowed to reply to it (basically, stand still).
