The one and only Wallaby Coach thread

Yeah, if we want crossover between current super coaches and the national setup than the short shifts coaching Australia A are were it should happen. Otherwise focus on a single role.

The absolute most I'd accept is one of the assistants coming from a super side joining the wallabies at the end of the super season, but without any ongoing crossover.

If we are still to go down the route of performance and strategy alignment between our clubs and the Wallabies, I’d like to see some kind of system where Super Rugby club assistants, specialists, S&C coordinators and performance managers are employed by RA and essentially subbied out to the states on a 2-3 year rotational basis.

The head coach of each franchise is employed directly by the state body and potentially they can keep one key member of their staff also employed by the franchise.

We’d ideally then be left with situations when a head coach role becomes available at a franchise, you’ve got an RA employed assistant who’s been to a couple of clubs and through the system for 4-6 years and ready to step up.

This presumes that the Wallaby organisation is not fucking everything up. Let us see evidence of that before we hobble the rest of the sport. It isn't what alignment means to me at all. I'm looking for a structure starting from kids, that gives a better opportunity to develop skills and experience the game and a pathway through developing those strengths at the grass roots. A healthy and vigorous game at community level - start aligning to that.

I think you’ll find most clubs believe they are healthy and vigorous with young players wanting to be involved.

The disconnect seems to be when those players start getting older and are presented with multiple pathways and rugby isn’t offering as much in terms of guidance and stability. On top of that the recent(ish) decline of super rugby means they don’t have visibility either.

I don’t have the answers and it seems pretty clear this is a divisive issue between supporters as to whether it’s a top down approach needed or start from the bottom and raise the standards. I feel like we are too far gone though and don’t have the time to invest in the second option.

I would love to see Laurie Fisher coaxed out of retirement. He was one of many that got dudded by the peanut that coached the Wallabies last year and deserves more time at the top.

I say let him enjoy semi-retirement, but get him involved with our juniors...

Yeah, we should be working to get him involved in pathways and ideally coaching development, where we sorely need to expertise and investment. Programs like the youth coaches forum are a great start.

Laurie was brought in to help us gain "clarity" come ruck time and we seemed to regress at how often our ball would be turned over at rucks.

Laurie seems to do great work when he has the players for months/years, not short periods. Let him provide insight as a consultant every now and then but, similar to Larkham and McKellar, in the short term, they shouldn't be coaching the Wallabies.

Our ruck work deteriorates as the phases increase, then the bad guys pounce as we run out of bodies

Cheika et al were committed to more width and we succeeded in providing millions of turnovers, with bodies strewn across the field watching another try being run in

Not sure how that is solved, possibly by not getting into long grinds with any width - that was Deans solution in the end, keep it tighter or just kick and chase and defend
