So I spoke to my old man and he doesn't have any burls left. He is heading out to near Roma next week to visit my great uncle who will have plenty I'm pretty sure as he has been making furniture out of them for decades. Dad says he's a Rugby man so without talking to him, he said he will probably be able to help out. He is going to give him a call.
Anything in particular we want with this burl? What size are we talking?

Remembering we are relying on these teams to transport this item too. I wouldn't want it too be a completely awkward and heavy piece of wood.

Also I think in terms of recognising teams, is the idea that whomever holds it at the end of the year gets their name engraved on it?

Hmm, or you could earn an engraving after a successful defence followed by the tally of successful defences..
It's only 8 games a season or 4 home games, so realistically you are only going to have of 2 engravings a year.

It could look something like this:
Melbourne Rising - 2 (2015)
Brisbane City - 4 (2015-2016)

Example:
-Rising are the holders at the beginning of the season
*denotes shield holder

Rd1 Rising* vs Vikings - vikings win(unsuccessful defence)
Rd2 Vikings* vs Spirit - Spirit win(unsuccessful defence)
Rd3 Spirit* vs City - Spirit win(successful defence)

So in the above scenario, Spirit are the only team who earns their name on the trophy having successfully defended the trophy in Rd3

For the Ranfurly, I think a team winning it for any period (even a week) gets to engrave it:

Sometimes three sides win it in one year, but overall it's worked out at less than one winner per year on average.

Can anyone confirm?

Engraving it whenever they hold it would be good, something to fight for. If it's a trophy you can do it like the Stanley Cup and just add layers to the base. If it's a shield you just add a larger plank behind it. If the teams get serious about the trophy they'll transport it no matter what

what sizes can we get? slab or block? I guess its up to RugbyReg and Pfitzy to decide which approach we're gonna take.
It couldn't be massive as dad would need to be able to bring it back (cruiser wagon towing a van) but I would imagine a biggish (for a shield) slab would be doable or if you wanted a burl for someone to turn a bowl or cup out of it would likely be smaller.
But I guess RugbyReg is probably on point in that it needs to be transportable so if dad can't get it back to Brisbane then it's probably too big anyway.

I think teams should only be able to engrave it after a home defence. Or even say 3 consecutive defences.

Don't like the end of season idea because that team may hold it for only 1 round, while another may have made 3 successful defences before that.

Rugby Community Shield is a decent enough name. I think it's the sort of thing that would hopefully develop a nickname anyway so the official name doesn't have to be that unique.

I also don't mind 'Spirit of Rugby Shield' which someone mentioned before, as it represents the values of the game and is a play on the whole 'game they play in heaven' thing. Could see some people finding it a little corny though.

I like the idea of a fairly large and rugged shield shape.

Yep, reward the teams for successful defending it ...
We want this trophy to add interest to every round don't we? So we need the 'prestige' of winning the trophy or defending the trophy to be on the line every week, not just the last round of the season.

Otherwise you have the potential scenario where 'team a' holds it for 4 successful defences but loses it in the last round to 'team b' who get their name engraved despite never having successfully defending it.

The emphasis of winning the trophy needs to be week to week, not the last round...

Instead of a "Winners" or "Holders" section it could be written "Defenders of the Shield" - under which those teams that have done so would have their name and the year engraved.

I like it, have their name, year and number of successful defences

When does NRC ver 2.0 start?

Might have to get cracking and make some executive decisions without waiting for universal agreement and endorsement from the Gaggerland proletariat for every little detail.

Can you explain this more? I can't get my head around it. How it would look on a shield? Each team listed down then X axis and years across the Y and then just a little notch gets made when they defend it?

Don't worry Hans. I'm not waiting for forum consensus. Have informed the ARU of our plans and they are having a chat about it. I've told them we are launching our campaign come the end of the week.

Also confirming Melbourne should be the current holders as minor premiers, not Brisbane City.
