The Lions need to go from the S14, losing all games (probably) in one season, says a lot, but having a 3.5k crowd on the weekend says The Southern Spears need to come into play. What are the chances of this happening?
To be blunt, who cares? I'm more concerned whether the Rebels get off the ground, rather than who the 5th best SA team might be. Would the Spears be any better anyway?chief said:The Lions need to go from the S14, losing all games (probably) in one season, says a lot, but having a 3.5k crowd on the weekend says The Southern Spears need to come into play. Southern Kings set for Currie Cup Rugby
Article Published: Wednesday 14 April 2010
The Southern Kings could start playing regular Currie Cup rugby as soon as this year if South African Rugby Union (Saru) president Oregan Hoskins gets his way.
The team would not be granted automatic inclusion in the premier division and they would not necessarily be called the Kings according to Hoskins.
Hoskins met Currie Cup sponsors earlier this week to discuss the possibility of including the Kings in the Currie Cup and the sponsors are said to have bought into the idea.
The Southern Kings were formed for the Super 15 after the Southern Spears were prevented from joining the Super14.
The Southern Kings however also failed to gain entry into the Super 15 and have been left in limbo after playing just one match against the British and Irish Lions.
Everyone seems to agree that the Southern and Eastern Cape region need to be more involved in rugby but wherever they turn they have come up against obstacles.
Hoskins is said to have put the development of the Southern and Eastern Cape region and transformation to the top of his agenda in his new term as president.
Hoskins said he would meet the three Kings member unions - Eastern Province, Border and South Western Districts - in the next few weeks to discuss the details of the team and how it would function.
"I think the Kings should be assisted to play top-level Currie Cup rugby as soon as possible," Hoskins told Business Day.
"I chatted to the sponsors and they agreed that we should take it forward."
Asked how he envisaged the team participating in the tournament and whether they would play in the premier division, he said: "The team needs to be anchored around one of the provinces, so they may not be called the Kings just yet.
"We need the buy-in from the provinces to allow their top players to play in the team."
"The team will also not automatically play in the premier division, they have to win to get there."
"But I will sit down with the provinces to get their input and figure out the best way to go about this process before we make any decisions."
"The important thing is that we keep them united."
No way you'll see the Cats again, that catfight never worked. Look you have to take the franchises CC provinces into account.en_force_er said:If the Spears/King rock the CC in bring them into the S15 and resurrect the Cats.

Lions = Golden Lions + Leopards + Pumas = 3 CC premium provinces
Cheetahs = Tin Ears + Griquas (both CC and they ended 4th and 5th on the cc log) + Griffons (1st Dividion)
Kings = EP+SWD+Border (bottom dwellars in the 1st dividion)
Cheetahs have Grey as their talent feeder (best in SA) , the Kings probably stronger schools compare to the Lions but the bottom talent is there, They just need to get the structure to the top in place, thats the secret. Pretty sure Muir know all about that. The Lions biggest mistake was appointing Muir iso Meyer a year back, Meyer was available and is strong in the structure building.. Thats what he did with the Brutes.
Its not just for give, its their location, Eastern Cape. Go to the SA schoolboy thread and you'll see our rugby talent comes from all parts of SA.en_force_er said:PaarlBok said:No way you'll see the Cats again, that catfight never worked. How come they don't give Kings a better province?

Interesting wording.

surely it will be only a matter of time before the sponsors follow and mid table is well within reach.
If that's the case, should SARU consider a draft to stop the Bulls warehousing talent? Serious question.Blue said:No they are going to lose against the Stormers, but I would back them to beat the Lions, Cheetahs, Highlanders.Gagger said:Apparently the Bulls B team are world beaters - they should get them in
Just to clarify a unique piece of Currie Cup nomenclature, 1st Division is the 2nd highest division. The top level is called Premier division and they have a relegation based system between the two comps.PaarlBok said:Lions = Golden Lions + Leopards + Pumas = 3 CC premium provinces
