Good thinking Hawko and welcome to the forum.

Actually I wouldn't play TPN at all. Luke Holmes can back up Fitzy.

Betham was taken to the RSA instead of Nadolo because he had a couple of terrific trial games. But he was only going to get on the park if there were a couple of injuries. He's not on the Tahs payroll, even at the pro Academy level and as I understand it: as soon as they play 3 games they have to get a S14 contract which runs at about $150,000.

The budget has already taken some damage with the use of Douglas who was not a S14 contracted player. In the Tahs Academy he would have been getting only about half of that.

I'm betting that Pete was told all that and that he would be first cab off the rank for a 2011 contract if he stays put. I see him getting Nadolo's contract in 2011 - but maybe they will get a 13 as a marquee player next year and not renew Anesi. That new marquee player would back up Horne and be able to play in the back 3.

On the other hand that could be all baloney.

When will Carter provide a decent pill to others outside him? In 2020 perhaps?

Never probably. But that will be Hangers' job to dish the ball out with the skip pass. Tommy crashed it up - a job he knows and loves. Then the other players come in over the advantage line. Wind through the wheat lads, wind through the wheat!

Barnes and Anesi will be paid whether they start or sit on the bench.

Money should not even be considered.

Either way, the person who brings in an inappropriate player will look bad.

Is that 3 games of any type or 3 S14 games?
If there had been injuries in SA and he played would they have to put him on contract?

Schmoo has had one good game this year (Bulls) and not been impressive in the other 3. Why wouldn't Hickey try both Betham and Nadolo off the bench to see how they go at this level? Hickey's still contracted for next year as coach and those two might be part of the future. We'll never know till they are put to the test.

Lee, my understanding is that if a player who is not part of the top squad is picked in a S14 22 they get match payments which are set by the basic players agreement struck between ARU and RUPA (?$7,000 or thereabouts). If they play 3 S14 they have to give them a full contract. I think the basic full contract is only about $60,000 (this figure set by the above agreement), certainly nowhere near $150,000.
And I think Luke Holmes is still injured. Has not been training or playing with Junior Tahs

Yeah the basic contract going back about three years was $50K. Top dollar at a provincial level was $110K before third party, but the ARU does the topping up for Wallaby contracts.

Add a bit of inflation and the renegotiated SANZAR deal and $60K doesn't seem too far from the mark

I think Carter is a good example of why I am a proud member of the Fire Hickey Club. Early in the game when Barnes actually attacked the line and opened a hole for Carter to run through, Carter completely missed it, fumbled the pass and killed a good attack. I feel like Horne would have known what to do, but that's probably unfair to assume. However, later in the game, Carter had some very good runs attack the 10 channel off short balls from Barnes and Hangers. He ran hard, at a good angle and onto a nicely timed pass. So here is my problem: WHY THE HELL DID THIS ONLY HAPPEN IN THE 60th MINUTE??!?!? I shouldn't be mystery to anyone who has watched Carter at all where he runs best. Kick chasing, short passes, inside channel tackling. These are his strengths. He doesn't really get outside people and those angles out in the 13 channel are clearly not his most comfortable area, so why gameplan with him out there? Mitchell runs those gaps well, Turner is quick and clever in that area.

The weird misuse of players really seems to be the problem. I'm a Burgess fan, but he is obviously never going to be a pure passing scrum-half. He is best running from the ruck and putting the defense under pressure. So why was there a gameplan where he spent lots of time staring at the ball?

This is why Hickey should go. The end.
