compared t the greatest game ever there was too many basic errors
plus the greatest game ever had many of the best players in the world at the time running on... and lomu

the problem with this game in terms of best ever contention is that it wasn't back and forth it was all the wallabies then all the boks and then KB (Kurtley Beale).

The best games are close throughout and go back and forth more often than this one did

But just to be clear this game was extremely entertaining

As I wrote in the game thread: Matfield has done that before - in fact he did a double chip kick and regather against the Tahs about 10 years ago and scored the try himself.

As for the game being the greatest: not close as somebody else said. The Game From Heaven in 2000 was the rugby game for all time. Walking back to the parking lot it didn't register that we had lost but that I had seen something at the ground that nobody else, (well, except 100,000 odd :lmao:), will ever get to see in their lives.

One of the best other games was another one we lost - the semi final of the 1987 RWC. Had I known how big the RWC was going to be I may not have been so charitable, but driving home from Concord all I could think about was the great game.

Another one when Gregan did his tackle was a top match to be at. I thought the game was lost as the tackle started.

It was a great test match at Bloem though, no doubt about it. I'm picking that it will affect quite a few players in a very positive way, and I don't mean just short term. They'll become true believers - in themselves.

Perhaps not best ever but undoubtedly the best away match for some time... The Bloemfontein test will be remembered as the win, which signaled a generational change for a successful Wallabies squad... this week the RWC looks possible… The All Blacks without Carter will be vulnerable…

The Sydney game in 2000, the RWC semi in 1987 and the Ballymore game against France in 1990 are the three involving us that will always stand out in my mind. The game at the weekend was a cracker, but not quite in the league of those ones.

Then there is the France v NZ RWC semi in 1999.

How did this thread make it to page two without someone mentioning the 1973 Baa Baas vs All Blacks match at Cardiff Arms Park? While known most for the "brilliant" Edwards try, it was a great match of attacking rugby featuring the 1971 Lions (in disguise) versus the ABs. Almost 40 years later, the match is still an entertaining watch. And also a history lesson as to how much the game has changed.

Good point Reddy.

I think the theory it was all Wobs for 35 then all Springboks for the rest with some KB (Kurtley Beale) at the end isn't accurate.

The Wobs pulled it together and made it a very even back/forth contest for the last 10 or 15.

Yeah it wasn't "all OZ" in the first and then "all Boks" in the 2nd.

The YC, then the Mitchell try and then the Morne kick and then the Boks dying with the ball and then the Beale kick. It was a great last 10 minutes for sure.

Some of the same criticism being labelled at this test "poor defence etc" is the same stuff I hear about the 2000 Bled. When the ABs jumped out to that lead, the backline defence of OZ was very brittle and guys like Alitini and Ireamia were getting through releatively untoched.

Then the OZ comeback had Larkham working a bit of magic and setting up his outsides.

But like that test, Saturdays game had drama in the last minutes. The Jeremy Paul try arrrgghhhhhh. But then Taine's pass to Lomu to win. Yaaaahhhhhh

Both very entertaining, both had lead changes near the death, both had last second heroics/heartbreaks

What happened to that guy? Now he could get through a gap or two.

Im not knocking the game im just saying that it wasn't close to some of the great ones because it was quite one sided at times, the best games have back and forth tries of the same sort of quality as this game had throughout the match.

Ieremia moved to japan.

Alatini was dropped by mitchell who was in favour of aaron mauger, 2001 eoyt. And after that he moved to japan to the same side as Ieremia. He was only 25 when he got dropped from the all blacks
