For me, the volume is the key. Most pubs will at least let you switch one of the many TVs to the rugby, but not that many will have the volume on for it.

Yess for me too. If a tv's volume is not up I simply cannot watch the match. It's hard to find a good pub with the volume up.

Town Hall Hotel in Balmain - Sydney goes alright. Big Screen and 10 min bus to the CBD. Although being in Balmain if the Tigers are playing then that will always take preference

The Pineapple Hotel in Kangaroo Point. Various tv's showing the games with volume. It's a bit of a metal & concrete tomb out the back but renovated old school up front. Meals are ok but expensive & a good range of beers on tap.

watching the opening match there, booked dinner, told there will be plenty of screens but NO sound

The pub is The Exchange - Locker Room on Charlotte Street.
I watched most of the Friday S15 matches there and it was pretty good.
Big screen with Fox commentary turned on and $4 schooners.
See http://www.theexchange.com.au/lockerroom/

Though I'm definitely tempted to check out the Grosvenor :D

Can you set one of these up for NZ too Moses? Then as people work their way around Heinekenland (aka New Zealand) they can add the best one's in.

Over the course of Sunday I'm planning on testing out the Albany Sports Cafe http://www.albanysportsbarcafe.co.nz/

Shed 10 in the Queens Wharf Fanzone, http://www.nz2011.govt.nz/experiencerealnz/queens-wharf/fanzone-shed10

Fox's Ale House & http://www.foxsalehouse.co.nz/

The Nations Clubrooms in Sky City http://www.skycityauckland.co.nz/Bars/The-Nations-Clubrooms.html

Quite Possibly in that order too if anyone's up for a Pub Crawl.

I can't really confirm this as I'm not in Canberra but if it wasn't the case I'd be flabbergasted:

The Rugby Union Club in Barton, ACT.

It's all in the name. And it will stay open to all hours of the night for the sole purpose of showing Brumbies' games in South Africa, so I would assume it'll be right for the RWC.

Usually has one big screen with the volume packed, and a few smaller screens around the pub.

The food is decent, but not spectacular. But in my time back there the bar staff were great.

Don't worry about looking for sports bars in NZ. Pretty much every bar worth its salt will play major sporting events. They won't be hard to find. A good suburban working mans pub will have a big screen and probably a TAB as well.
