Do your google due diligence, and you will find the pay of good tight heads (and even looseheads) is significant in Europe.

Cast your eye over your favourite rugby team and who do you think is the best paid? Maybe that wing, with the dazzling sidestep and a kit bag full of hair gel? How about the fly-half with the boot of gold and a smile to melt your mother's heart? Think again. Think the tighthead prop, the best of whom are earning a cool quarter of a million pounds a year.
Based on their rarity value and specialist skills, props -and particularly tightheads -have been the subject of almost every significant tug of war in this year's transfer market. And when the player on the end of the rope is, say, the 6ft, 19st tighthead Kees Meeuws, it takes quite a tug. Meeuws quit his French club Castres in June after a fall-out with the coach and Harlequins, desperate to sign big in the front five on their return to the Premiership, offered pounds 130,000 a year for the 32-year-old veteran of 42 All Black Tests. They were not even close. Meeuws could name his price at more than pounds 200,000 a year, including a house and a car, and another French side, Agen, paid it.

Hayman and Sheridan have two of the higher contracts in the Premiership. BJ Botha and CJ vd Linde are the two highest paid props in the Magners League, and earn in the same wage bracket as O'Driscoll, Williams, O'Connell etc. Tighthead Kees Lensing was the highest paid player in South African when he was lured from the Bulls to the Sharks a few years back. A good tighthead is a rare commodity, and his services are valuable.

Dunning? Has he come good yet because I've been waiting for a long time and it hasn't happened.

He was the second best THP in the country last year.

That makes him more important than any back.

Was he really? He's s long term failure. Time to cut him off.

Irrespective of the pay amounts of backs v forwards...I don't see how Dunning can demand top dollar whilst ranked as probably the 4th prop in his province (as Kepu will return soon) and still suffering a serious long term injury which has ruined many a career. My bet is that he even won't be the number 3 TH in Aus by the end of the Super 14 - my money is on Shepherdson and Weeks surpassing someone who hasn't played in 8 months.

"He's s long term failure" he is? he is an average test prop who can play both sides, but "average" is streets ahead of the rest.

The ones coming up at THP are no way near ready for test rugby, Sheperdson just can't scrummage, Weeks is in his first year and "may" be ready if his body holds up, Edwards hasn't come on, Ma'fu is penalised out of games against decent loose heads and the Force have nothing. Kepu is a LHP being converted.

If Baxter goes down before a tri nations game who do you want the corner the scrum instead of Dunning?

I wish they'd train Ben Alexander into THP. Got the size for it, just needs the attitude. Shame he's in Canberra actually - Foley could have turned him into a machine by 2011...

Unfortunately Alexander still has Aus prop disease, they shows great work around the ground and then start to work on their scrummaging.

Exactly.

And if they won't pay props, what chance is there of them putting in resources for scrum school/coaching/development for the props of tomorrow ?

I read a story around the time that Hayman left for Newcastle that tight head props are one of the highest paid positions in rugby, especially in the Top 14 in France.
I read the same story - they rate the THP as the most important player on the ground, and the reserve THP as the second most important. Then they pay accordingly.

I also read a J'On interview maybe two years ago where he was saying that we'd start to pay our props in line with their importance to the team.

Unfortunately, its not just about value on the paddock. Giteau and Lote are products off the field as well. Its sad but true. You rarely hear forwards making stupid comments and giggling for the camera yet every time rugby is mentioned on television, you have one of Tuqiri or Giteau saying something mindless. Dunning is the most talkative of the forwards but he has a head for radio. Chabal is marketable because of his mystique. Maybe one of the Aussie forwards should try something like that.
I reckon Dunning's got a good point, why should their ARU contract be 20 - 40% bigger when they're reliant of the forwards to get any ball? These flashy backs can still go out and get third party endorsements to bring up their overall salary, but the central contracts should be decided on what they bring to the team.
Al Baxter brings a lot more to the Wallabies than Lote, no matter how many calls he makes on his speakerphone.

ah, as inspiring as that article is, im not one who takes a colorful bit of journalism as fact, potentially there are a few THP's in high pay brackets, but to say that THP's in general are the highest paid players is clutching at straws.

Careful reading would have seen that that article was written in 2006. Player's salaries across the board has increased since then.

so you actually have zero evidence to back up your claims then?

Dunning is a donut. He is fat and useless and I would welcome any of the tight head props in Australia to go in before him. I still remember when the twat cost us a Bledisloe match in NZ as a result of being a petulant tosser.

Why is that some players run to the press like little sooks asking for money? We've had Waugh, now Dunning... Come on guys, you are not worth the investment.
