Much-maligned Waratahs find welcome ally in Stormers coach Rassie Erasmus

By Darren Walton
April 05, 2009

Stormers coach Rassie Erasmus hailed the New South Wales Waratahs the real deal after coming off second-best in a Super 14 arm wrestle at the Sydney Football Stadium on Saturday night.
One of the most maligned teams in Australian sport - win, lose or draw - the Waratahs found an unlikely ally after escaping with an unconvincing 12-6 victory over the South Africans.

The Waratahs bombed three certain tries and missed five shots at goal, but two spectacular five-pointers from winger and man of the match Lachie Turner were enough for an 11th straight win at the SFS.

Turner did it all himself for the first try, beating two defenders before re-gathering his own chip kick in the fifth minute.

His match-sealing second try was even better, with replacement full-back Kurtley Beale piercing the Stormers defence and then producing a delicate chip for Turner to complete the movement and cement the Waratahs' top-four position.

While frustrated that another narrow defeat had ended the Stormers' own play-off hopes, a thoroughly impressed Erasmus lauded the Waratahs as genuine title contenders.

One of the most astute coaches in the game, Erasmus believes the Waratahs - with Beale serving as a match-winning impact player - now possess an x-factor to compliment their workmanlike forward pack and virtual 2008 final backline.

Erasmus says perhaps it's time for the critics to jump on the NSW bandwagon.

?The thing that's really good about them is the thing they're getting a lot of flak for,'' he said.

?I actually want to compliment them as a coaching staff because sometimes people outside the team and not involved can criticise a team for being too conservative.

?For me, they actually mix it up really well with their kicking game and the way they attack.

?They are actually very unpredictable with Beale coming up and having these little chip kicks ... and then play just the forwards orientated (style) and then their drive and then they take it wide.

?They actually are not as predictable as everybody thinks. It's tough to plan against them.

?That's why they're still in the top four. They're now glued in the top four.''

With two more home games against the Bulls on Saturday night then the Western Force before a three-match stint in South Africa to complete the regular season, the Waratahs are content to keep winning ugly as they edge towards a fourth finals appearance in five years.

?We left some points out on the field but the most important thing is we walk away with the four points,'' skipper Phil Waugh said.

Waugh said Beale deserved special praise for the ?superb'' way he has bounced back in the past fortnight since losing his starting five-eighth role to Daniel Halangahu.

?People underestimate Kurtley's maturity as a person, the way he's come on over the last 24 months,'' he said.

?He's fronted up at training (this week) and he knew he was going to get some good time tonight and he came on and provided some spark.

?He's certainly got a lot of poise for a guy who's just turned 20.''

Erasmus could only agree.

?He's a good player. Give him credit for that,'' he said.

?They've got a great team so it's not fair to single out one guy, but he did make an impact when he came on.

?Credit also must go to a guy like Lachie Turner, who had a fantastic game. Scored two tries and I think at the end of the day he was the difference.''

The Stormer's defence was pretty bloody good, (the best in the comp) they have maniacs like Burger rushing up on the inside and DeVilliers camped offside at 12 to close off wide balls.

There attack seems to be the issue. apart from one game against the Lions. they have struggled to score points.

Feels like they scored their season share of tries against the Lions a few weeks back. Think the Stormers need Bekker in the backline to score tries. :nta: Also think they miss the new hooktjie, Andries Fourie, he sure is handsome with ball in hand.

One positive for myself from this game it look like the young Paarl Gimmie Dewaldt Duvenhage has nail him a starting spot in 9. Januarie is shite these days and I know this kid from young age and knew he is a goodie. Hopefull the other Paarl Gimmie, Dylan des Fountain need a change in 13.

Saterday against the Brumbies it will be the last roll of the dice and you can expect a pretty desperate Stormers team. Thats when they are dangerous.

Puke Watson was a handfull
Well after this weekend it become clear he will just have to. The Springbok Coach has climbed into his dad over the weekend big time. Maybe not the right thread but our rugby without it inner politics not thinkable. Maybe I should start a new one on SA Rugby Piolitics and keep everyone busy even in off season.

Snor climb into Cheeky Watson

Sondag
Div gives SARU seven days
2009-04-05 18:03

Cape Town - Springbok coach Peter de Villiers has given SA Rugby seven days to take action against Cheeky Watson.

This is after Watson referred to De Villiers in a recent meeting of the EP Legends as ?a baboon who does not know what he is doing.?

De Villiers sent a letter to SA Rugby through his attorney Ferdi Hartzenberg, in which he asks that the organisation takes action against Watson for the racist remarks that he made in the meeting.

Watson still has not confirmed or denied the comment, but De Villiers? attorneys have let SA Rugby know that they believe the comment is the ?worst type of defamation and racism? that there is.

According to Sondag?s sourced, De Villiers is so incensed about the incident, and the fact that SA Rugby have not taken any action that he is considering resigning as Springbok coach over the matter.

The lawyers letter, which Sondag has a copy of, asks that SA Rugby start an investigation after Watson?s comments.

?Given the fact that a member of our client?s employer orchestrated this personal attack on our client, we are of the opinion that it is in everybody?s best interests for SA Rugby to rectify the situation,? the letter reads.

If not, De Villiers threatens to institute a grievance against his employers because SA Rugby ?promised him to set a climate where he is protected from personal attacks and an environment in which he can give his best work in his position.?

Watson told OFM earlier this week that he and De Villiers are still friends but the letter confirms that this is far from the point.

The letter makes mention of the fact that Watson was contacted and denied the allegations, but says that ?it is quite obvious that the true facts and the information given differ completely from each other.?

The letter was sent via fax to SA Rugby?s legal adviser Christo Ferreira on Tuesday and asks that the matter ?be rectified within seven days.?

Hartzenberg told Sondag that he has not heard anything from SA Rugby on the matter and referred them back to the organisation.

An SA Rugby spokesperson said the matter was being investigated but declined to comment further about why the organisation had not replied or taken action as yet.

In a related incident, the official who served papers on Watson last week for defamation after he was attacked in a newspaper article, Godfrey Afrika, was called into SA Rugby ?to discuss his future?.

According to Sondag?s sources Afrika was told that he was no longer part of the Eastern Cape franchise and would in future be limited to developmental tasks in the region.

The question is can Tom Carter pass?
Can he? Don't know.
Does he? No.

Never seen it. He'd do well to stop trying to act the tough guy mouthing off at the opposition at every stoppage. If he put all that wasted energy into his play, maybe Turner will one day receive a pass on the outside. Seems a very limited player though. His preferred option is to bash it up but other than that there isn't much to write home about.

Finished watching this one. Sure it wasn't the most exciting game but it was exactly trash either. Just that neither side seemed to be able to find a rhythm. Two more passes stick and the Tahs get a bonus point, simple as that. Stormers looked dangerous but jeez how often did Grant get the ball in attack?

The thing about Burger sliding up on the scrum was discussed I think on TSF and someone was saying the Burger was perfectly entitled to be where he was as he was still bound to the second rowers. A basic lesson about the term: to "bind" is the whole arm with the shoulder in contact. If Burger's inside shoulder was in Robinson's throat he could hardly be bound anywhere to a Stormers second row ::)

Agree. And if Gahu had slotted a kick or two the pressure from that would've opened it up more as well. Tahs weren't far from a decent score, although for the finals it's all gotta stick.

True but it could be worse: everything could be going perfectly NOW only for the wheels to fall off at finals time. :)

Thought Human should have been more patient when he try the chip kick.

But hell its all ifs now and if my auntie had balls , she would be my uncle! :lmao:
