I've tried to wait for Chris Hickey to prove himself, before I say it, but he just hasn't. His lack of depth, his lack of creativity, and just overall playing boring rugby. Although he personally is not out there pulling off the boring rugby, he's the mastermind. I very much think he needs to go come seasons end. What a disappointment.

Can I also just say bad idea getting rid of Ewen

Which reminds me, and apologies for digressing, Hickey is hopeless and should be fired.

Really? Would you care to elaborate? :fishing :lmao:

I know the SMH is largely good for cleaning car windows and picking up dog turds but people, read once in a while. Or is there a literacy issue here at the Scarf?

Fitzimmons started wearing a red bandana when he took part in a celebrity Masterchef show and has decided to, unfortunatley, keep the device on his oversized noggin. Now we don't only have a self absorbed hack screaming from the rooftops, we have a red bandana wearing self absorbed hack screaming from the rooftops.

If the Tahs wanted to kick Ewen for playing boring rugby and getting to the finals twice, then dumping Hickey is the only option.

At the time, I thought Ewen moving on was the best thing for the tahs and for Ewen. The prbloem was that the leather arm patch brigade stuffed up the replacement for Ewen and so we ended up with hickey, who looked great on paper but that is all.

I only read it for the crosswords - trying to build cerebral credits to offset dementia and all that!!

Talking of ex-Wallabies, saw Kearns down at the Balmoral 1km Charity Swim this morning. Good effort from him taking the red-eye back from Perth overnight and fronting up. Not sure the budgies ar a good idea though Phil - and a dood set of love handles on you (says me, a true adonis of a man).

Poor form quoting oneself but having now seen the results from today's swim I take it back and apologise to Mr Kearns for mentioning the love handles. A pretty good time amongst the whole field and a very impressive time in the mens 40-49 category. Certainly put my fat and sorry arse into place!

I am struggling to see value in Kepu

Top scoring prop in the Fantasy teams this week. Could have been a handy addition to my team instead of the crap I've currently got. Proof again how deceptive statistics can be.

Bench carter, drop beale, bring in Rory Sidey. (I would say Nadolo, but a winger that is heavier then cliffy palu just wont do)

Also, start interchanging the back 3 eg. swap anesi with mitchel or turner for 10 mins or so, they can all play fullback and wing

I still say we would have lost those two games without his leadership. The fact that Hodgson was a better no 7 is correct, but is not to my point. We would have lost those two games, sure and certain with no Waugh.

Correct. The strips stack better in the bathroom and don't leave ink streaks in your underwear.

Those are some pretty strong words there. Whilst I think Beale's defence has been a bit suspect (not that he has had many tackles to make lately), I definitely would not put it down to him being a coward (BTW is it possible to be a non-gutless coward?).

Spot on. If there is a better player at the Tahs to bring in and replace him I'm all for it, but I really don't think there is such a player.

It is a great time for Palu to be negotiating his new contract after we saw how much the Waratahs missed him...on the other hand, maybe Hickey is planning on letting him go (?!)....anything is possible with this coach.

Mowen had a poor game, but I'm not prepared to write him off. He started the season brilliantly (a couple of the games he was the standout performer) and then he got benched - whilst as a professional he should be able to deal with these things, he is also a young man and presumably prone to being disappointed and dejected when dropped from the team for playing well (who knows what good aspects of his natural game are being coached out of him?).

Just for consistency (six weeks running):

Anesi must go.

Barnes is pretty honest about his own performance

Worst game ever but four points: Barnes rates his woeful weekend

NO ONE needed to ask the question. ''That was probably the worst game I have ever f---ing played,'' offered Waratahs centre Berrick Barnes after his side's unimpressive 14-10 defeat of the Western Force in Perth.

The Waratahs' fourth win from six games elevated them from seventh to fourth on the Super 14 ladder but Barnes was at a loss to explain his sub-par performance, which included two dropped passes, a try-scoring intercept by Force winger Scott Staniforth off one of his passes and three misses from four kicks at goal.

''I don't know … you have those nights [where] nothing seems to go right. I can't explain it,'' Barnes said. ''It was just one of those nights [where] you prepare reasonably well. Luckily, as a team - not being selfish or anything - we got over the line, which is the most important thing: to get four points.''

Barnes, who was replaced in the 73rd minute by Kurtley Beale, said a groin niggle and bruising in the sternum from a hit in training had limited his kicking practice but he would not use that as an excuse. Instead, he said, he must sharpen mentally this week before playing the Blues.

The Waratahs play the Aucklanders at the Sydney Football Stadium on Saturday night and are acutely aware how dangerous their opponents' attack can be after the Blues came out in the second half against the Brumbies in Auckland to score four of their five tries in 20 minutes to win 39-34.

''I pride myself on trying to be consistent,'' Barnes said. ''[Saturday] night was way out of the ordinary for me. I have a lot to do to rectify that. It's about preparing a lot harder and staying focused. Early in the week I had a few issues - things like getting your body right. I have to be mentally stronger.''

However, Barnes was still able to make one light-hearted reflection yesterday. It was on Staniforth's intercept of his pass in the 25th minute. It led to the Force's only try and saw the still winless hosts take a 10-8 lead after James O'Connor added the conversion.

Barnes recalled a trial game at the ME Bank Stadium last year between the Force and Reds - whom he played for at the time - and how one of his passes was intercepted by his current NSW teammate, Drew Mitchell, who was then contracted to the Perth side.

''I've thrown two intercepts on that ground now. I haven't a good track record. I've given one to Drew and one to 'Spanner','' he laughed.

But Barnes is also keeping his misfortune in perspective. Told it was good he could still laugh the day after playing such a poor game, he shrugged, smiled and said: ''At the moment I haven't got cancer. I haven't got anything real bad. At the end of the day, the sun is still going to come up and I'm still going.

''Look, when you look back on your career, you are going to have a few days like that. I just have to prepare bloody hard this week to try and rectify it.''

He also played down the attempt by Waratahs coach Chris Hickey to deflect criticism from Barnes by praising his work in defence on Saturday. ''It's easy to overlook his contribution in defence, he was a really key factor in defence, particularly marking up James O'Connor,'' Hickey said.

Told of Hickey's comment, Barnes said: ''I don't know. That's Chris [looking] for a positive, I suppose. I'll have to thank him. There weren't too many …''

But he agreed NSW's overall defence was good, saying: ''We've worked hard on our defence. Their only try was from an intercept. That's a positive.''

He also knows their defence must lift against a side like the Blues.

''They are probably the most dangerous back line at the moment,'' he said. ''Guys like Rene Ranger, [Isaia] Toeava, Stephen Brett, [Josevata] Rokocoko. They have all the names there. We are going to have our work cut out.''

To back up what Langthorne said: Mowen was benched for Dennis while playing outstanding rugby. He's got to feel absolutely gutted, anyone would. He was on the bench for game one when he should have started too. During that time, Mumm got a spot in the pack when his form did not deserve it. So he has taken not one but several hits this year and I am not surprised he went poorly by his standards when he replaced Palu. He knows Hickey will drop him even if he scores four tries and wins the game.

When the people in a team know they are not going to be selected or dropped based on how they are playing, two things happen: those who are guaranteed spots don't try as hard and those who are not inevitably drop their effort because the mind is not telling the body to work hard.

Nadolo scores four tries for the JW's in one game and still can't get a spot on the bench. Likewise Betham plays brilliantly in the trials and all he gets is a holiday to SA for two weeks. Carter handbrakes the attack every week but still gets picked, I guess because he tackles well. Anese hasn't missed hardly a minute of game time and is yet to make a line break or put his winger away. Barnes plays poorly for four weeks, has one not-too-bad game and then has a shocker. I'll bet he's already pencilled in at 12 next week. Beale gets five minutes each week out of position, regardless of others form. McCaffrey makes the bench twice and doesn't get a minute on the park, even when Palu is injured. TPN plays injured even though we have the number 3 hooker in Oz on the bench (I still don't yet rate Faiinga, he's got the body and play of a backrower not a front rower). Mumm gets two weeks for stupidity then goes straight back in to the team. Didn't have jetlag and still played poorly against the Sharks. And don't get me started on Palmer.

When players know that selection is not based on form then morale is affected for everyone. The coach's job is to pick players on performance, so everyone knows they have to perform each week. The Tah's are now in the four, but are playing like a team in the bottom four (Bulls and Lions games aside). That's what a coach will give you who got the job because he was last man standing when the hatchets stopped swinging. Conservative play, poor selection, bad man management.
