Isn't it great to have our leading rugby journalist, Greg Growden, back writing about rugby, and in such superb early season form.

This article has it all: "Waratahs board members sat in the middle of the punters"; and an absolutely absorbing reminiscence about "a NSW season launch held in a low-grade restaurant almost turned into a riot when the scribes discovered there was only light beer on offer." Laugh? I bloody near pissed myself.

Then we were treated to a detailed discussion about our man's most recent free feed "in the land of the pretty people at The Ivy, eating and drinking quality fare." You have to wonder how he'd go trying to get into the Ivy after midnight any other time to get back among "the pretty people".

There was even enough mention of the actual game to create the impression that he had either actually been there or had spoken to someone in the bar later night who had.

I don't want to start an argument with our non-Aussie members, but I am firmly convinced that you wouldn't get that standard of rugby analysis and insight in any other country

Interesting that none of the papers mentioned any of the things I'd jotted down in my notes:
Cliffy's return. Flick Pass!
TPN's return, fro, Shaft!
Lachie at 13
Rolling mauls
On debut: Afa / Kingston / Woodhouse
Tah Giants

The Reds? That's an easy given for us like every year since 2000? Real test will be at Christchurch, when the Crusaders will be playing with some extra motivation.

If I recall correctly, but for a Palu try at the end of last year's game, the Reds would have won it.

They'll be stronger this year, even if it is in confidence only.

lol would.

I could also mention how Caldwell and Palu crashed heads and went off, that's when the Reds scored their points. Or Mumm's ridiculous binning. You lost the game because Quade Cooper is the biggest liability to ever grace a rugby field and that won't change this year.

How much is QC (Quade Cooper) looking forward to playing Cliff twice this year?
I know he is ruthless but he will be shitting bricks!

Food and drink outlets were definitely understaffed, combining this with their customary levels of incompetence and I heard of people waiting up to 30 minutes for a beer, plus I tried to get a pie during 1/4 time and got to 7 from the front before the next quarter started. I suspect they forecasted fewer to attend.

Not sure if this is the responsibility of the Tahs or the SFS, but it's been a problem as long as I've been going to the SFS. It aint rocket surgery either. If they were to improve their systems they'd sell more product and at $5 a hotdog and $6 a beer they'd not only have happier customers but happier shareholders as they'd make more profit.

Dear SFS,
if we all promise not to throw them, can we have beer in cans again?
Sincerely,
Waratah fans
I reckon you'd have gotten 7,567 signatures to that statement last Friday. The 7,568th would belong to that muppet with the $5k hole in his pocket after he ran onto the field during the presentation at the end.

It's a problem these days, we have to legislate to the lowest common denominator, and when that is "dumb as batshit", everybody misses out.

But I like the idea. Are open cans such a problem? In Christchurch they sell 330ml pet bottles (like a half coke buddy), unopened, and refrigerate the entire country. To stop people running on the ground they have cavalry that gallop around with bigarse lances.

Yes we got out of gaol against the Reds last year, and this year they're stronger. I expect a very hard game.
