My question around cancelling rounds and the whole Halligans situation today. I know it’s something that doesn’t happen often but I think there needs to be some clarity from Subbies around what defines a “cancelled” round.

This week in Div 2 Round 14 was cancelled in favour of playing the catch up games so everyone had 14 games. No arguments right decision.

In Div 1 they played the played the Waves/ Lindfield catch up game to bring everyone up to 13 games. The belief is that Rd 14 is postponed till the wet weather week next week. But we still have lower grade catch up games to play in this division. So the options as I see it should have been
a) play them on the available grounds this week instead of the Halligans cup and JJC semis.
B) Cancel Rd 14 as all teams were unable to play and play all the catch up games next week on the wet weather week before hitting finals. This would have freed up space on these available grounds to either catch up the outstanding Knox/Hornsby game or to play the Div 5 or JJC finals that were scheduled.

There’s no consistency with cancelled rounds (I know it’s something that had never happened before last year) The top 4s in Div 1 won’t change (apart from positions) next week but there was clubs that could of qualified in Div 2. The rule should be if all games are washed out in a round and no available wet weather round for all clubs then it is cancelled.

Meanwhile let’s not get started on the finals make up this year. JJC Yellow 8 teams 3 week series. JJC Blue 8 teams 2 week finals series. Div 5 (before the rain) 8 teams 3 week series. Div 6 8 teams 2 week series. Is there a deadline for this season that we aren’t aware of? Why must everything be done by the 6th of September except for Div 1….

Cricket season starts mid-September doesn't it?

Petersham Club Champions in 2nd Division by 50 points! Congrats to them.

Hills way out in front by nearly 500 points in 3rd Div, despite no Colts presence. Mainly thanks to a 2nd Grade that scored a near perfect season of 74 table points from a possible 75.

Wakehurst Div 4 champions as well as first grade minor premiers.

Congrats to all.

Started with Newport last week and Lindfield this week
A typical hero post from the cheap seats. If I’m not mistaken you are aligned to Petersham and surely not still bitter about your clubs demotion to second Div.

Not much to debate that Newport and Lindfield have had tough years and should bounce back stronger in 2026. Can’t see either club throwing their toys out of the cot and trying to prevent being moved to Div 2 should it happen. The carryon in 2023 was an embarrassment for two great clubs

Season over for the Emus with Oatley on the wrong end yesterday and a GRR bonus point win.
A lot of adversity this year and we managed to come home with a wet sail but just couldn't get there.
Thanks to all in Subbies land who have supported our return!

What are the plans for 2026 fletch?
off the top of my head...
continue to rebuild the brand. Locally we have to get the community behind the club, sponsors etc. We have to keep this cohort together and grow steadily. Our aim for 2025 was 2 grade and a colts. Probably similar in 2026. Colts is a tough one but we will try, same with womens. 3 of our starters were just out of school and very good for us contributing to the end of season run. We had 18 guys out by round 4 and we managed to keep building finishing with 60+ registered. There's a genuine 30+ I would expect back at pre season (not a week before kick off) and build on it again.
A lot of off-field stuff around improving our facility and the visibility of the club and code.
Hoping the clubs around us have successful seasons as I don't want any growth to be the result of anyone going backwards. There are a dozen guys who came this season saying they reached out to the other clubs around us and they didn't get back to them - we are just want to raise the bar for what has previously offered here and for the greater good of rugby.

If we go with the push from a lot of people on GAGR (I don’t agree with it) for next year our divisions could look like this…

Note: I’ve based this off results this year and the push to move Lindfield & Newport down. Plus number of extra games played. Obviously a lot more will factor into the division structure.

Div 1- 6 team play everyone 3 times- 15 rounds. 5 grades & Colts & JJC- “The untouchables”
Hunters Hill
Mosman
Waverly
Blue Mountains
Colleagues
Drummoyne

Div 2- 8 teams 14 rounds. 4 Grades & Colts, optional 5th grade & JJC. Lindfield and Newport drop. Ultimate aim to build someone up to move up and split 7/7.
Lindfield
Newport
UNSW
Petersham
St Pats
Forrest
Briars
Sydney Irish/Colleagues 2 Colts - pending numbers

Div 3- 8 teams 14 rounds. 2 Grades & Colts. Optional 3rd Grade. Optional JJC. Potentially a 6 team comp if the bottom teams can’t get numbers
Hills
Beecroft
Knox
Hornsby
LC Old Iggies
Kings
Valley- Pending Colts
Renegades- Pending Colts. Believe in you Pfitzy!

Div 4- 8 teams 14 rounds. 2 teams. Swapped with Div 5 to better align movement.
Harlequins
Redfield
Blacktown
Raptors
Epping
Canterbury
Manly
Penrith

Div 5- 7 team comp 14 rounds with a bye. 1 team & Colts. Ideally find a 8th side to remove the bye, might depend on how the Brothers rebuild is going.
Barker
Balmain
Wakehurst
Chatswood
Mac Uni
St Ives/Brothers Colts?
Buraneer & Buraneer Colts (2 seperate clubs)

Div 6- 7 teams 14 rounds with a bye. 1 team.
Merrylands
Sydney Harbour
Georges River
Oatley
North Cronulla
Convicts
Maccabi

It works out quite well other than leaving Div 1 in an island on its own. 8 teams in Divs 2/3 & 4 strengthens the middle of Subbies. 2 solid 7 team divisions allows some growth at the bottom as well.

That's how it should be.

Too many clubs relying on the detriment of others and hopefully we see some green shoots from this Western Sydney plan.

Thanks Fletch. Subbies desperately needs another club with 2 grades, colts and a Womens team to help with the slow rebuild of the middle divisions. Hard not to see all your hard work coming to fruition next year.
PS - I made a contribution to the Emus Future Fund.

Only issue with your Div 1 proposal is only 1 of those clubs has a JJC team.
