Sydney Subbies 2025

Two weeks in, and everyone has decided Newport are a bust. Tough crowd.

Anyone who has been around Div Two for Newport's "reign of terror" knows that they were a level above. Whether they're good enough to hang with Div One is a story that's currently in progress.

Loving the interest in all things Breakers!

I’m hearing plenty of excellent learnings & things to tighten for Newport from yesterday but well done Whales on a clean sweep. Bar the first 10 mins of 4ths I did t see any of it but my scouts tell me on a different day it could have been a different story.
Some unusually sloppy defence in 1st grade led to several soft tries along with some over exuberance to run from our 22. Our super boot nailing 1/5 was also an anomaly. The first two issues addressable at training. Positives were a dominate scrum.

2s was line ball & colts beaten last minute by last years Grand Finalists. Even 3s with a 21-3 penalty count & yellow card & 4ths can take something away to focus on.

The good news is the girls won and their program is building nicely with solid numbers.

The boys will dust themselves off and prepare to welcome Old Soldier to Porters in what will be a fantastic day of footy played in front of a bumper local crowd.

out of interest Ref Ted, what is the cashola that refs in subbies get paid? hope its decent? Also what would be a stepup game for a subbies ref? ie subbies rep team / kentwell final etc?
See below the payment rates from 2024. It is pretty much a stipend to cover some costs for travelling etc. Publicly available in the association annual report.
Many refs (particularly older ones) donate fees back to the association.

As for stepup, there is some cross over subbies to prem.
Under the old gradings (system changed this year) match rankings were 1. Shute Shield, 2. Colin Caird, 3. Colts1, 4. GPS 1, 5. CAS 1, 6. Henderson Shield, 7. Kentwell Cup, 8. Barraclough Cup. Kentwell refs could be appointed as far up as Colin Caird (B), and Colts 1 (C), Barraclough (D & C) would be mostly subbies dominant referees who could still be appointed Colts 2 and 4th grade in prem.
For finals, refs are selected from a certain grading upwards (e.g. 'H' and up), if you are selected your group is generally aimed at a lower grading than typical during a season as there are less games. At this time refs are chosen based on form and coaches select the lucky few that get a final each year. If you get a final you are doing pretty well at your level. A colleague refereed his first grand final in 2023 in his 30th year of refereeing.

Allow me to be the first to say you guys don't get paid enough for what you have to deal with some games

Beyond the cost of fuel and tolls in Sydney. One day we had a ref at Kellyville who drove from Coogee!

As Ref_Ted said above: for the young refs it is a modest income stream but a lot of refs donate it back.
