Huge weekend ahead for UNSW & Petersham for double points at David Phillips.

UNSW will have Petersham covered in the lower grades I'd say. Colts I'll go with Petersham.

1s & 2s will be a toss up and will lean towards the home team for the W, which would just about lock up the Div 2 Club Championship and long awaited return to Div 1

Am I the only one who would love to be a neutral observer at these games? Obviously can’t with own club commitments but it would be great to watch some of these games with a beer in the sun. May just have to wait till finals.

I think Petersham take out 1s this week. They look the complete package, their defence has been solid the last two weeks only letting in three points.

UNSW will have to shift up a gear or two.

Div 3 Round 9 Predictions:

Hornsby @ Blacktown:
Hornsby by 20. Blacktown in a close one in 2s, whilst Old Barker should do a number on Hornsby colts.
Beecroft @ LCOI: Beecroft by 30. LCOI by a bunch in 2s and colts though.
Hills @ Knox: Knox by 5. Hills in 2s handily.
7/8.

Hornsby def. Blacktown by 11. Good scrap from the Blacktown boys, inching closer to their first W, Hornsby starting to string some wins together - this time off the back of Bird's boot - appears to be the form kicker in Div 3. Hornsby got the upset in 2s also (my 1 miss this week), a great day for them. Although their Colts got flogged by Old Barker.

Beecroft def. LCOI by 2. Wow, LCOI almost got the boilover of the season so far. Looked like a pearler that went down to the wire. LCOI have played Knox and Beecroft very close this year, but still nothing to show for it. For all their promise, they stand at just the 1 win from 8 games, 3 wins back from Knox and Hornsby, so their season is likely (not mathematically) done - tough way to go. Beecroft lucky to leave with the 4 points in hand. LCOI 2s and Colts both with really strong wins though, continuing their momentum as they run towards finals. Hills and Knox likely await them.

Knox def. Hills by 2. A combined 3 points across Knox's two wins over Hills this year, great battles. Particularly impressed by Sloane and L Banfield up from Colts in 1s this week - both excelled against their older opponents. Hills 2s are running amok in the 2s comp, nobody coming close. Knox colts get a week off a bonus point win... like they needed it.

Div 3 Tips
Blacktown v Hornsby: Hornsby by 25.
Knox v Hills: Hills by 12
LCOI v Beecroft: . Beecroft by 40
2/3 but well off with the margins.

Takeaways from the round.

Beecroft v LCOI: LCOI came so close to pulling up the upset of the season and in the process showed the division they can mix it with the best and that Beecroft are not as dominant as previously thought. If LCOI can keep to this standard they could make the finals, but will be ruing their double points loss to Hornsby last week. Is Beecroft's lack of depth and reliance on a strong 1st grade teams starting to show as injuries start to affect the team.

Knox v Hills: The 2nd matchup between the teams in the likely 2v3 final fixture produced another good game and another win to Knox. Hills will be left to review the game and figure out how are they going to flip the tables on Knox. But the silver lining for Hills is Knox's colts reinforcements are not likely to support them in the finals.

Hornsby v Blacktown: Hornsby got the W but could regret not getting a winning bonus point against Blacktown when every other team has. Hornsby will need every competition point they can get if LCOI continues their form from this weekend. Blacktown will be happy to have produced their first competitive game in the division and another game with no reds will keep their committee and subbies happy.

Div 1 Predictions

Newport - Colleagues - Will Newports support remain high despite a lack of results in Div 1. Colleagues by 7

Drummoyne - HH - Battle of the Bridge, which will be won by the West side. HH on an absolute roll, Drummoyne looking towards Mad Monday already. HH by 15

Lindfield - Blue Mountains - Going with another Away team away. Lindfield have been awfully quiet on here after their barrage of accounts created after beating Newport. Both sides have been disappointing this year, although drop offs would be expected given the previous success. Blueys by 3

Mosman - Waverley - 4/4 for the away teams this week. Ambitious to think all away teams win, as this game is surely the game of the round. See Saw battle. Mosman slick backs vs Waverleys forwards - Waverley to win late.
4/4 in Kentwell including the method of victory in the Whales Waves game.

Colleagues look sharp and only getting better
HH have class across the board and can attack you from anywhere. No real weaknesses in their game and good depth off the bench and in 2's
Lindfield starting a slide which might humble a few.

Potentially the top 4 are already taking shape if no injuries impact.

have the Lindfield keyboard warriors forgotten their usernames and passwords? They were very chirpy when they topped the round robin relegation battle (Newport & Drummoyne).

haven’t heard from heavyD either? Fingers must be covered in salad dressing from all the hospitality Newport are providing teams under the sticks at snorters reserve

This may be a post for another forum and I know it isn’t as simple as this.

But all year seeing Shute Shield Clubs push there lower grade teams and Colts sides onto other venues and really early time slots or other days. So they can prioritise 1st Colts and the higher grades.

If there’s no connectivity with the club other than in name. Surely the better option would be to have these Colts and lower grades playing on Subbies strengthening those comps and then be able to pull on guys if you get injuries etc.

I know it doesn’t work like that and people won’t play if it means another club. But I really don’t see the point of playing 3rd grade colts for a club at 8am at a completely different venue to the rest of the club..

@Pfitzy any idea on why the Canterbury vs Harlequins game in your Division wasn’t for Double Points? The game from Rd 2 still says postponed and you’d have thought it should have been for Double Points to catch it up? Or are they planning on playing it on the Wet Weather? Dangerous game if we get some rain.

They're playing it on the weekend of the Tahs v Lions (5th July), by mutual agreement.

The prospect of playing it on the Anzac long weekend, immediately following an Easter long weekend, was seen as fraught with peril.

Wise move in retrospect

I think playing on the 5th July like a lot of clubs seem to be doing anyway would have been the better option. Rather than a bye. Start earlier in the day and then organise getting up to your pub or club house to watch the game.

Would have been great if they could have done a deal for Subbies clubs on tickets like they’ve done and get clubs taking a group to the game. Though I think tickets will be in high demand for these games.

Instead we have a clunky few weeks of start stop footy leading into finals as we fit around the Lions games.

It's a tricky one - if no wet weather it may have worked well and of course the intention of encouraging Subbies players/coaches/supporters to attend the Lions matches is a good one commercially. Once you lose a few games to weather or draw disruption its tricky. In this age of default double points I understand both clubs need to agree to a make up game instead of double points. Will most likely result in a situation where the home team who stands lose a home game wants a make up game but the team that stands to pick up a double points home game has no interest in a make up game. Would like to see the mid-season wet weather weekends return in 2026!

Understand the desire to get Subbies to go to the game. However given we have Div 6 running a full round on the 5th and Shute Shield having a full round on both the Tahs and Wallabies weekends it seems odd that we have broken up our season like this when no one else has done it.

Three weeks on, one week off would be great for the volunteers TBH.

The 6 week stretch going into the June Long Weekend was going to be a mountain to climb until Round 6 got washed out.
And yet we used to play 18 game seasons with barely a week off and we all survived. I wouldn't be playing subbies if I was in my heyday now, I'd be playing mid level Shute so I could play more than a dozen games a year.

At least you get to play a full season rather than a dozen games or whatever the part timers who hold sway in subbies deem appropriate these days.
