So at this stage the only games going ahead in Subbies:

Hunters Hill v Colleagues
Newport v Briars
HVRU v Oysters (R2)
Chatswood v Redfield (Headen)

Maccabi v Convicts also happening in Div 5 - pushed forward from Round 6 when Convicts are at the Bingham cup. Not sure why Burrows is open but it is, so we’re on.

How’s the ground holding up?

Clean sweep number 4. We were outweighed in the lower grades by 15kgs per man but Breakers are a very young club, excellent defenders and some good pace out wide.

First grade we were nervous, 22-12 with Briars playing skilful wet weather footy in the 2nd half and the game was on a knife edge. We will take the win and move on. Would kill for a sunny Saturday to get the faithful back in numbers to keep the bar tills singing.

Maccabi v Convicts also happening in Div 5 - pushed forward from Round 6 when Convicts are at the Bingham cup. Not sure why Burrows is open but it is, so we’re on.

Valley took the first 2 games while First Grade was pretty good, both sides trading blows but Oysters closed it out late

Across 4 Grass and Colts, Pat's have lost 1 game to Petersham (Barraclough).

3rd in Barraclough, first in Stockdale, Robertson, and Blunt. Equal first in Richardson on table points but 2nd on F/A by a single match point

Petersham have had an interrupted start to the season with the Epping fixture and then two washouts in a row. 3 weeks without rugby for their 1st Grade side, they’ll be fired up back at Camperdown this weekend v Hills.

Penrith said it. And make it sound like they're using it as a stepping stone back to Premier Rugby. Which is interesting thinking, on a number of fronts.

That's the first point.

Next, the amateur rules aren't compatible with rebuilding a team for Premier Rugby.

Third, they're just up the road from a very successful Blue Mountains operation. And a few of their players from last year are at other clubs out this way.

Lastly: nobody has been promoted to Premier Rugby from Subbies Rugby in the current format.

So what is the plan?

I'd love to grow the Renegades into a competitive 3rd division side with the addition of a Colts team. That is probably achievable within a few years with a lot of hard work to get the U21 program off the ground (so close this year!)

The step up to 2nd division requires much more in terms of financial backing and personnel.

Still, Powerball is $100M this week ... Might be able to convince the Eels to put a grandstand on the Field of Dreams

Breakers vs Petersham will be a cracker day across all grades. Petersham love a bus trip and Newport have a sponsor that puts on a $300 clubhouse bar tab for any club that brings a bus.

Newport would be happy with their start but they know its a long season and tough challenges await. Their draw sees them home a lot in round 1 and on the road in round 2 so that may impact. But moral is high and they are focussed on trying to beat Epping in the lower grades this week. with the Breakers Colts side getting its chance to shine at 3.15pm HH #2 Colts. Please god don't rain!

Whether it was their return to Shute Shield or brief and unsuccessful run in the ACT comp the "plan" never seems to work at Penrith. Returning to any sort of Premier Rugby for the Emus would be a pipe dream. Very interested to see where they would fit in the Divisions if they do in fact return in Subbies. Hard to see them any higher than Div 3 but I'd say they would have Colts.

ACT Comp is so similar to Shute Shield in terms of quality - The amount of Brumbies that play club rugby on a weekly basis puts shame to the Waratahs effort to link in to Shute level. Felt bad for Penrith trying to keep up with these teams, plus the 3 hour one way travel.

I can see them being competitive in 3rd Div especially with the amount of work they are putting in this year to get the club back running

There are a few schools that play rugby in Penrith arent there? plus the Penrith RSL juniors, so you'd think the 3 teams (including colts) plus a women's team would be the minimum.
I always think back to the 90s when they were a mid-table 1st division club doing ok - then the madness started with promotion into Shute.
Surely a club with 4 teams, decent coaches and a half decent club house would go well in subbies without the need to pay players.
