Sydney Subbies 2024

Righto, lets start with predictions with whose going to take out clubs champs for each Div?

Also how do we think lindfield will fare in Div !?
Div 1
Hunters Hill
to win Club Champs on the back of string higher grades and Colts.
Premiers- Drummoyne to break the Hunters boys hearts again
Spoon- Mosman to give Subbies some headaches after running 8 teams but struggling in Div 1.
Lindfield are on a roll and will be mid table in Div 1. They won’t compete with the big boys but some clubs might fall over on a trip to the Old Soilders.

Div 2
UNSW
to finally have there year after years of getting run over by clubs on a run.
Premiers- UNSW - toss up between Petersham and Pats for who they play.
Spoon- Hills- depth in the higher grades and Colts means they will struggle. Though if we see the mid year exodus Newport could struggle.

Div 3
Sydney Harlequins-
a club on the rise and will be a toss up with Knox for the top Spot.
Premiers- Harbour- Will make it 4 in a row. No one will get close to them in 1s in this division. But will be a drama for Subbies as without the support of Easts there a 1 team club.
Spoon- Will depend on who ends up in this division but will be a toss up between the new Lane Cove/Iggies merger and Barker. Could be a tough year for the new merger club, they may benefit from a year in Div 4 to help them grow but Subbies can’t afford to loose more clubs from an already struggling division.

Div 4
Merrylands-
will continue to be dominate in this division unless there forced to go up. Pfitzys boys to be the big improvers here, seeing good things out of them so far.
Premiers- Merrylands to be to strong and fast. Would imagine given the Div 3 mess Subbies will be leaning on them and Irish to go up and fill some holes.
Spoon- Mac Uni another tough year for the Students though without Lane cove we could see Saints in this spot.

Div 5/6?
Real toss up with this one, Depends on whose got the latest rugby league ring in. I’ll go with the Sea Lice. They’ve been strong over the past few years but didn’t get the job done last year.

Indeed.

Difficult to make any predictions about Divs 3-6 at this point when we don't know the structure of each.

Clubs like Mac Uni often don't know where they'll fit until March when semester starts. The right student influx and they could be ok. Not easy to make plans around that.

Mosman to take out Club Champs in Div 1 despite not winning the most games or fielding the right number of teams. Blue Mountains to take out half the grades and make the finals in the other but are demoted to Div 2 because... well.... it's just too hard to drive to Lapstone.

Will be watching Lindfield with interest in DIV 1 and wish them well. Traditionally strong in the lower grades, but fear unless they have a good recruitment year in the front row area they may fight out Kentwell Cup spoon with Forest. But of course happy to be proved wrong by Old Soldier.

From a Newport perspective I suspect they will be back to normal and will be competitive again across all grades. Plenty of Barraclough Cup winners of 2022 returning for 2024.

Way too early ladder predictions for Div 2

Barraclough Cup

1. St Pats
2. UNSW
3. Newport
4. Petersham
5. Beecroft
6. Hills
7. Epping
8. Briars

Despite a bad 2023, St Pats are pissed off and will be piling resources to make sure Subbies regret their decision to put them down a division. UNSW will be strong and trying extremely hard to win it all with Lindfield gone. Newport will be back to strength with a full team next year and Shammies will be decent. Beecroft will most likely be the best of the non-finals teams with the rest being off the pace.

Stockdale Cup

1. St Pats
2. UNSW
3. Hills
4. Newport
5. Beecroft
6. Petersham
7. Epping
8. Briars

Robertson Cup

1. Newport
2. St Pats
3. Beecroft
4. UNSW
5. Petersham
6. Epping
7. Hills
8. Briars

Blunt Cup

1. Hills
2. Epping
3. UNSW
4. Petersham
5. Newport
6. St Pats
7. Beecroft
8. Briars

Looks like they had quite a large front row in their colts the past few years. Hopefully they are strong enough to make the jump.

Clearly not a fan of Briars…
Some big assumptions there, especially with Beecroft, will be tough finding that extra side every week. Multiple games take there toll

Briars are quite clearly the next to go down to Div 3. They had their anniversary year last season and still struggled for most of the year, do you realistically see them finishing above the spoon with the overall division standard increased? For sure a lot of assumptions about Beecroft, I think they’ll be fine for numbers they had players itching to get into 2nd grade all year last year. We’ll see how adding a third grade affects overall quality.

Div 2 looking strong this year. Hopefully clubs will be more settled after last years overseas exodus to Europe etc post covid. Any news on how Knox old boys are looking?
Do Newport still see a few of the local mungos now that the northern beaches league comp doesnt exist. ( clubs feed into other comps around sydney now).

Setting Div 1 and 2 draws on club socials.

Round 1 Kentwell Grand Final rematch at Lapstone.
Wet weather weekends- 11th May, 1st and 20tth July. Sigh of relief was expelled... Have a wedding to go to on the 20th...really who gets married on a Saturday (and during peak rugby season) anymore. Don't they all shoot off to Bali or some other inconvenient location?

Oh wow, div 3 for Hornsby.
I don’t know much about the central coast comp to be fair but having played a fair bit of Div 3 and more recently in the Central West, if it’s anything like CW, that’s 100 pt plus scoreline difference in standard.
