Sydney Subbies 2024

Question from Div 5 for the wise men of this forum: Blacktown are currently showing up on Fusesport with 2 bonus point wins but only 8 points. Does anyone know whether this is an error or am I missing something?
I believe they have been penalised and docked points for an incident in Rd 1.

Can confirm - Blue Mountains still have their guns. They have also added another ex Shute Shield gun at 10. Very good side. Will be hard to beat again this year.
Yep, and likely the reason Souths don't have a 4th Grade this year. Players are retired and have family now, better fit in Subbies in my humble opinion. None of them apparently train anymore either.

Given their structure and cohesion on Saturday - Id find it hard to believe that Blueys team doesnt train together. They were a well structured, fast, physical side with weapons in the forwards and the backs. Not unbeatable, however with the skill level and experience of those players, they can control a game quite well.
Will be interesting to see how Colleagues fare against them this week.

Looks like Div 2 has a competition on its hands.

Beecroft had 9 new first graders return from the week before, they had Hills 34-5 on the ropes with 15 to go and then literally ran out of puff. Two amazing come backs in a row for Hills.

Briars beat Petersham and HarryElite reckons more stars arriving at Concord this week it will make for an interesting clash against the pre season designated premiers St Pats.

All of a sudden the comp has been blown wide open!

Early indications are we could have 7 clubs genuinely fighting for the top 4! Will be interesting to see how it all pans out and the depth of clubs gets tested with inevitable injuries, holiday etc but seems as though any team can get the win on their day.

Kentwell and Club Championship for Div 1 looking interesting this year.

Colleagues going down to Drummoyne in most grades is a stark contrast to the results last year. I think Waverley is a shoe in for CC after a dissapointing year last year.

Reckon Subbies is slowly finding its feet after the Covid issues. Reckon we're seeing green shoots?

Hopefully. There are some good signs among all the rumours that keyboard warriors are starting in cahoots with their stalking horse accounts

Longer term? I think we're still going to see sporadic issues in the lower three Divisions as volunteers and players cycle through the system.

Two from four... for Lane Cove Old Ignatians Rugby Football Club's first home game at Tantallon Oval in front of the biggest crowd in five years, making excellent use of the (relatively) new undercover facilities.
Colts had another strong victory over Chatswood and retained the 'highly coveted'...Pacific Hwy Cup.
2nds had a one point loss to Merrylands. Game could of gone either way. With regular time up, LCOI down by 6 attacking Merrylands line, receiving multiple penalties, Merrylands received a yellow card, LCOI finally got over the line 5 metres in from touch. Conversion falls short but Merrylands charge too early so a second attempt was given and......hits the post. Merrylands wins 22-21.
1st went down 24-12 in wet and cold, cold, cold (did I mention cold?) conditions. Merrylands with a strong pack and outstanding in broken play proved too good.
And most importantly LCOI maintained their undefeated run in the boat race.

Fourth Div:
Kings v Renegades
Hornsby v Chatswood
Canterbury v Wakehurst
Raptors v Redfield

4 from 4 - Wakehurst, Redfield, and Renegades very short on numbers.

We managed to overpower Kings in the last quarter. They were running into the wind but still scored a couple of nice tries. Forwards had to roll their sleeves up.

The result didn't go our way this week.

We did not handle the extreme conditions at Hassall, running into a gailforce wind and rain, we fell to a 21-0 deficit to Colleagues at halftime. Credit must be given to Colleagues who played better in the conditions with simple bell recycling. We played better in the 2nd half, with some crushing tackles from Reinhardt, Fordy and Jarvo put shivers into the Colleagues team, though the damage had been done in the first half. We fell 35-7 in the end, with the boys crossing for a brilliant try off a sneaky line out play from Marto sending Jack Dean over.

The team keeps on improving. Numbers are a little less than we would like but with hard work we are a good chance of taking it to Oatley on our home turf this week before the bye.

Kentwell will be between the same usual suspects.
Last years top 4 + everyone else, bar Forest and Lindfield to make up 7 and 8.

credit due to subbies as the top 6 represent a competitive division with any club capable of winning on their day.

do we see 2024 being a 6 club comp
For Div1 and Div2 being strengthened? (What about the Epping Phantoms????)

Drummoyne v colleagues game looked like a grind
With some very good game management from Ben halmarick and a fresh faced Liam Doyle
Also hearing there’s two Samoan rugby World Cup under 20s players in their top squad
Was out there. Was an absolute stinker with some seriously wet conditions. Hard to take too much out of it from both sides but yes that young 10 from Drummoyne looks like a gun. Interested to see how both teams go this weekend.

Getting in early for the long weekend.

Beecroft v UNSW: Both teams are 0-2 and desperate for a win. Beecroft threw away a golden opportunity last week whilst UNSW fought to the end in the deluge against Newport. I think UNSW fitness and set piece will be the difference in the final 20 here again and should see them register their first win. UNSW by 10

St Pats v Briars: MOTR, St Pats declared themselves 2024 Premiers in January, with many assuming Briars would struggle. This promises to be a fantastic clash with Briars new recruits throwing the entire Barraclough on its head. Im going to go with a Briars victory on the basis that the recruitment campaign hasnt yet finished. I'll await the GAGR sluths to work out where they are all coming from! Briars by 7

Hills v Newport: Hills, the Div 2 houdini's! Two amazing come from behind wins for the ages to start their 2024 campaign. They wont want to give the Breakers too much of a start as their defense and fitness will hold for the 80 mins. This is shaping up as a real danger game for the Breakers but will go with the away side to sneak over the line with their backs relishing a dry track this w/e. Newport by 5.

Div 4
Chatswood v Renegades - we're missing our RAAF contingent due to military rugby duties, so that puts some pressure on key positions straight away. Hopefully there is enough left to keep the Stags contained and sneak a win.

Canterbury v Redfield - Berries have some good numbers at home and Redfield are taking time to warm up and get their numbers back early in the season. Close one to the home side.

Raptors v Wakehurst - it'll be very tough at Mittigar for most teams this year. Wakehurst didn't travel well to Canterbury so predicting a sizeable margin here.

Kings v Hornsby - on a wet track last week Hornsby put Chatswood to the sword. On a dry track at McKay it could be even bigger against KOBs.

Let The Boys Play.

Beecroft vs UNSW - its about now when unsw start coming to the party. Beecroft are always a challenge at home but I think unsw have a decent bench and should hold them out - uni by 8

Pats vs Briars - great coms on social media about this fixture, the battle of Parramatta Road ( worth viewing). Great to see Briars putting out 5 teams aswell. It will be close, Briars defense won them last weekend so let's see how their sevens stars go in a dry game. Can't call it , 24 all.

Hills vs Newport, Newport clearly running colts through grade to make 4 teams. I just can't see Hills holding off a "big 4" team. Newport to run away in the end by 12

Don't forget Epping 1ns vs Shamies - from all accounts Eppings biggest mistake was beeting Briars 2s, raising concerns that all teams need to stack. The actuality announced there first grade caps on the socials prior to that fixture. Shamies will run a much changed 2nd grade to thrash them after a wake up call last weekend. PS by 20

Looks like Colleagues Colt 2.0 is now filling the Hills colts void. Great result for the competition as we dont need two byes. Will be interesting to see if Newport fields a 4th grade now.

Only listed for this weekend in the draw so far and at 1045. So is it more of a Halligan cup thing?

Hopefully not just a one off. If Colleagues want regular quality opposition and are confident they have enough players it’s a no brainer.

Would be great.

Just thinking about the injury counts and mid-year Euro vacations ;)

They're in the comp ladder so that's a good sign.
