Have to apologise directly for that one as I played 80 minutes at loosehead prop. Shit happens - Wakehurst didn't want to know about our forwards and put on a couple of nice moves against our inexperienced backs.

Junior club field two teams in under 18s comp which is mainly made up from kids at St Augustine’s and Barrenjoey but players come from everywhere, surf clubs, league and younger brothers of older players.

Some good quality rugby played at David Phillips yesterday with Forest, Hunters Hill and Lindfield the big winners on the day with St Pats and Hills left to lick their wounds.​

Understand the practical benefits of playing the games at the same time and place but the field where the major semis was played (the Waratahs training field) is horrible for spectators. Couple that with balls constantly been kicked on the road or on the roof! Subbies need to make sure teams have 8 match balls available!​

Early tips for the qualifying finals:​

4th Grade - Hills v HH; Hills and Lindfield have been the leaders all year and I'm sure Hills will bounce back well this Saturday.​

3rd Grade - Hills v HH; Hills again to come away with the goods against Hunters Hill who finished in 4th place. This is the 2nd place play off really, can't see anyone ending Lindfield's unbeaten year.​

Colts - St Pats v Lindfield; really not sure which way this one will go. St Pats got the better of Lindfield in the regular season but Lindfield will be coming in hot after putting 50 on BOBs in the minor semi. Flip of the coin will give Pats the benefit of the doubt. Once again it seems to be the playoff for 2nd place with Forest looking to go undefeated.​

2nd Grade - Forest v UNSW; Forest to get their third team through to the GF against a handy UNSW team.​

1st Grade - Hunters Hill v St Pats; only minor semi finalist I'm backing to get the job done. Both teams coming off see-sawing matches. Feel as though the fire power in the Hunters back line will be the point of difference. HH my tip to win the Barraclough Cup to follow Blueys winning from 3rd. St Pats to give it a good shake, predicting this to be a great game.​

No excuses for Newport. I wasn’t out there today but 4 teams in semis was always going to stretch us. Can’t see anything other than a deserving GF for Blacktown vs ROBs. Two best teams all year so with or without him fancy ROBS over Iggies.
Glad our colts got up in 7-1 try flogging as they deserve to be GF favourites as they have some very good players.

Iggies have beaten Redfield this year - surprise surprise, one of the matches old mate Jono decided to show up for a run.

The Redfield 9 also in for finals though - they're much better with him in the team.

In our game (2s) they definitely had a fair few guys on the bench. Don’t know how many came on. Having said that, we had a guy red carded 5 min into the game for the least threatening and most accidental “lifting tackle” I’ve even seen.

Some decisions are just bizarre in the game these days. I was at North Sydney Oval watching Shute semis where there were punches to the head thrown and landed and players only received yellows.

Scott Barrett's red was absolutely ridiculous as well. On that basis, you could find a red card somewhere in every ruck.

It absolutely wasn't - there was no way he was going to effect anything other than a shoulder to the ball carrier's head. I've discussed the issue with many refs, particularly where it concerns players driving low and close to the line, and none of them are thrilled with having to make those decisions, but neither are they shirking from player safety as the key issue.

If Barrett even tried to get his right arm up, instead of tucking it into the body, he may have mitigated to a yellow. But tucking in and dropping like that? Yeah, nah.

In FuseSport I'm seeing Yellow Cards for "Form of striking or kicking" and wonder where to "Punching = red card" warning from Subbies Divisional meetings has gone.

Hardly. Barrett went off his feet to attack the head with the shoulder. It was blatantly obvious in real time and damning in slow motion. Even if you ignore the shoulder and attacking the head, in what world was he attempting to stay on his feet entering the ruck. On every level it was a professional foul and the sooner this $H!+ is cleaned out of the game the better.

Maybe if refs did actually issue cards for this rubbish more often, it might create better rugby with improved player safety the outcome. Win/win I say.

I dunno, I really don't think Scott Barrett is that type of player and I really don't think there was much malice inetnded at all.

I just fear that we are becoming soccer, not so much in diving and soft contact but more the impact that big decisions re red cards have on a match. Its a slippery slope for the game when that incident is a red card in my opinion.

I agree that it was less about malice and more about, "this is what we can get away with". Hooper was off his feet with almost no forward momentum. Barrett made no attempt whatsoever to stay on his feet. He dived into a ruck. end of story. Professional foul near the try line and yellow card could have been the end of it. But he dropped his shoulder and aimed for the head. Automatic red card. I doubt there was intent to cause serious injury, just intimidate, but he recklessly attacked the head. There is simply no other way to look at it.

Had he bothered to stay on his feet (no penalty) he would have been forced to use his arms (no penalty), there would unlikely have been any contact with the head (no penalty) and, given Hooper's body position, probably had the option for stealing the ball.(turnover or penalty for against Hooper for not releasing.)

There are some instances in rugby where the slippery slope argument could possibly hold water, but this one is about as slippery as superglue on grip tape.

Point of order: he dived into a tackle - it wasn't a ruck at that point because a tackle was being executed by Coles on Hooper.

Fine... How much do we all hate Iggies?

Final this weekend in Division 6 sees Lane Cove (2) against Raptors (3). The latter lost their star fullback to a red card (double yellow) last week, and I don't think either side will be relying on their defence to save the day. One will attack wide, and one in close. In the major semi, Lane Cove appeared to be missing a few regulars* against Savers that they'll need back to frustrate the bigger Raptors side.

* and their team sheet is now a swiss cheese with missing names.

Div 5 should be interesting - I'd expect the Sea Lice to walk over Maccabi BUT they've had a couple of close games out of their 3 clashes this year, and can put on points when they need to. Bare numbers tho... You can see in the table where the top 3 got 10+ wins and the bottom 3 gathered 5 or less.

The Lice aren't nearly as dominant as they were last year, which I find interesting. Their defence seems to have degraded a bit overall.

Burraneer look assured to hoist the trophy but I know Engadine will have something to say about that after coming close a few times. Should be a good game.

I notice you had a 1st grade Shute shield player from west’s harbour this year? What’s the process for clearance.
I think it’s great that these players come and give a boost to their local or junior clubs.
Genuinely Interest in the process though.
