Looks like Hunters got a warm welcome back to DIV 1 from the Whales. That’s a strong across the grades result for powerhouse Mosman as Boronia is a tough place to register a clean sweep.

Barraclough looks the most competitive of the 1st grade comps with Hills and Forest looking impressive early.

Though it’s early 3rd DiV looks like (BOBs, Iggies, HAC and Redfield) will make up the finals with Valley, Newport, Saints and Brothers looking to register the odd upset. Disappointing (but understandable)to see Brothers and Saints forefeiting 3rds in only round 2. Hopefully they can rally the troops and get teams out there next week.

Knobs also registering a solid first round one win, expect them to be a much improved side this year.
HAC strong/competitive across all grades this week, awesome to see. Big games start this week for Div 3.

Have to be careful about the points allocation RC. If you don't leave a big enough gap between the grades then clubs just start giving up on first grade and stacking lower grades to fight for the championships. It's a really tough balance.

I agree. It doesn't need to be diluted too much. But when a 5th grader (who - at least theoretically - pays the same subs as a first grader) has to have an undefeated season to contribute to Club Champs to equal one 1st grade win...something's askew.

How valuable does that bloke feel. Especially as he's expected to stick around all day, man the BBQ, bar and clean up while the 1st grader gets to turn up when Colts start and, maybe, stick around for a beer afterwards.

If you are made to feel like you don't count for much, why keep playing? Hence the position Subbies rugby now finds itself.

Very very early in the season, but a crucial test coming up in the next two weeks for BOBs. Away games to Iggies and HAC. The games against Iggies last year were split with the away team winning each time and the preliminary final ending in a draw. Its going to be a big test to prove where the club is at and I can't wait to see how they go.

The colts results threw up a few interesting results. Plenty of people were talking about St Pats numbers in colts, well they knocked Lindfield off on Saturday. Lindfield have now lost two in a row in colts after no losing a game last year. Also Brothers and Iggies having a draw in colts on Saturday.I thought Iggies would get the chocolates in that one.

Also don't know if it is a quirk of the draw, but Newport having two bus trips in a row to Hawkesbury Valley and HAC in consecutive weeks just seems crazy.

I also notice in Div 3 in the second half of the season some clubs aren't playing teams they played in the same order in the first half. Anyone got any info on why?

Numbers starting to build for us this week after a couple of shitty weeks for attendance in terms of First Grade quality players. Should be able to put out two grades against Merrylands after last week's bare XV taking the field against Menai.

(Don't worry Laura - I'll confirm by email asap ;) )

At the start of the season the draws sit in draft pending feedback from clubs. I understand historically that Forest and Newport have always tried to limit their home games clashing with Manly and Rats home games. I'd suggest the back to back bus trips is a trade off to ensure limited financial impact from the above scenario.

When you're at the city limits(as all 3 of those clubs are) these things are going to happen.

Grant funding secured. Won't cover all our registration costs, but the club will take the heat on the rest of it and offer free rego (Shorts + Socks compulsory = $30).

Subbies have only issued us invoicing for 1 Grade so far, as they pro-rate the rest for the season depending on how many games we play. That stretches the grant funding further, as with 5 clubs now looking at 2 Grades, we're effectively paying for 1.5 lots of rego.

Note: this excludes the $1950 Insurance, which is required once you hit 4 games in the season I believe for Halligan, Noice, and Sutherland Cups.

Anyone have any mail on the subbies breakaway comp apparently being organised out of a north of the harbour club? Apparently refs have been offered 3 to 4 times their normal payments? Will be bank rolled by 3rd party and will say goodbye to amateur status.

Hope they've got a lot of money. Not sure that local Councils are going to take competitions that aren't sanctioned by the RA/NSWRU and the insurance costs that go with it.

I’m not sure anyone gives a fark about what the NSWRU supports or sanctions. I’d suggest that is half the underlying driver here.

Insurance is easily obtained. If they are locking away referees for the competition you’d have to say things are well advanced.

Remember you heard it here first.

Div 3 Tips:

Some cracking rounds this weekend, as top the top 4 face each other.

MOTR: Redfield vs HAC. I expect this to be a real cracker! Redfield to be the real deal this year and given it is HAC's first real road trip, I am going for an upset of sorts. Redfield by 5.

Iggies vs BOBS. Should be another cracker. Both backlines are their strength but Iggies forward pack to be the difference. Iggies by 10.

St Ives vs Brothers. Both keen to get first win but Brothers to get the win. Brothers by 10

Hawkesbury Valley vs Newport. Will be a close one. Tough for Newport on Back to Back bus trips. Valley only just.

Think Div 3 results will all be close things

Redfield vs HAC . I went and watched HAC last sat, looked to have good numbers. Redfield are a very good team who have beaten HAC a number of times over the years. Real close thing, with the win going either way by less than a try.

Iggies vs BOBS. BOBS are the real thing and will win this by 5

St Ives vs BROTHERS. St Ives in real trouble and brothers to not help them this sat. 2nd grade could be the worse game in subbies 2018

Valley vs NEWPORT. Newport to get home by 10

DIV 1
MOSMAN vs Waves - Mosman by 30+ unless their focus is on other endeavours!
SHAMMIES vs Hunters - another 30+ victory and will test Hunters overall depth.
DRUMMOYNE vs Balmain - the muzzled wolves to go down by 5 in this local derby
KNOBs vs Colleagues - match of the round and will go with KNOBs as at home by 3

DIV 2
Old Soldier vs HILLS - the Hills boys will be too big too strong
Unsw vs ST PATRICKS - looks like Unsw has left their form from 2017 behind. Pats by 10
FOREST vs Beecroft - Wow this will be a grubby encounter and expect plenty of cheap shots. Forest riding high will win this comfortably but expect several yellows and maybe a red from this fixture.
BLUE MOUNTAINS vs Rams - will it be lambs to the slaughter up at Lapstone if the big mountain men get going? Will be tight but the week in week out grind of Barraclough tells me the home side by a whisker.

DIV 3
HAWKESBURY vs Newport - A bus trip too far for renowned poor travelers Newport, Valley by 14
iggies vs BOBS - will give us a good insight into the pecking order of where the top 4 sides sit in this DIV. BOBS by 12
Saints Vs BROTHERS - as per above but for the bottom 4 sides. Will be interesting if both clubs forefeit 3rds or they call each others bluff.
Redfield vs HAC - Match of the round. See nothing but an HAC victory in an entertaining encounter.
