Southern Districts had a more difficult draw coming into yesterday's match against Gordon and maybe they were entitled to favouratism, although I didn't see the 40-0 away victory coming.

Having not seen the game I'd be pleased to read any reviews.

I might be a bit biased (well....make that a lot) but the Souths performance was impressive in every facet of the game. The set pieces were impressive with a couple of scrum penalties highlighting their dominance in that area, and they won all but a couple of their own line outs. Last week against Norths the breakdown was an issue, but the timing was much better this week, and resulted in a number of good turnovers, and a couple of penalties.
The score was nil-all for the first 25 mins, and while Gordon defended well during the early stages, it always looked like Souths would break through, and three quick tries before half-time saw them go to the break 22-0 in front. The first try came from a nice short ball from the tight-head prop (Valeni) to the flying fullback (Bell) who went over untouched beside the posts. The second try went to the lock (Wilson) after a series of pick and drives, and the third saw a neat interchange of short passes after the hooker (Wayland) made the initial break, and passed outside to the no. 8 (Lawson) when then passed back inside to the blindside flanker (Finch) who went over beside the uprights - the five-eighth (Kuenzle) slotted a couple of conversions and a penalty goal to make up the 22 pts.
The second half was much of the same, with the Souths line speed in defence shutting down any of Gordon's efforts to mount attacking raids, and the continued dominance at the set piece continually putting Gordon on the back foot. Two more penalty goals to Kuenzle, and 2 tries - one to the right winger (Carmody) and another to the left winger (Naleba) which was converted by the outside centre (Morris) resulted in the final score of 40-0.
While Gordon had some impressive players (the no. 8, Clifford, was the pick of them), Souths shut them down in every way - they were more polished and far more enthusiastic, and even in the dying minutes, the Souths defence repelled Gordon's last gasp attack with a degree of vigour that you'd normally see at the start of a game.
While Gordon got away with a close win in 3rds, 26-19, they dominated the 2nds encounter with a more convincing 39-12 victory. Fortunately for Souths, the 1st Grade boys put the smiles back on the faces of everyone who'd made the trek north to Chatswood.

Much appreciated, OldColt. Sounds like plenty for the Gordon coaches/players to work on both in the set piece area and in attack.

Their assignment doesn't get any easier next Saturday with their clash against Syd Uni.

Manly's 1st grade colts joined the seniors in hosting Easts at Manly oval for a "Super Saturday." On the back of three good results they would of being hoping for a dominant performance in front of a growing home crowd. Unfortunately hoping for a good performance is the supporters job, putting it on the field is up to the players.

It started well with the Manly lads having better field position and plenty of ball for the 1st 10 minutes or so, but failed to take advantage of the dominance and position. Once Easts backs got a roll on they managed to capitalise on any opportunities while Manly continued to bungle theirs....and Manly did the work to create opportunities, they just didn't finish them.
Easts scored their fifth try and 29th unanswered point about twenty minutes into the second half.

Manly's pigs saved themselves from a nude run by demolishing the Easts pack in a series of scrums starting at 50m out that included tight head wins, penalties and a pushover from outside the 5m that resulted in a penalty try in the last few minutes. (I am kind of obliged to dwell on this)

Things a bit quieter after last week's excitement, though a couple of interesting results have blurred the form line, or maybe it's like focusing binoculars..set everything up with one eye and fine tune the other

From a Gordon point of view the following are Gordon juniors - Horton, Swinton, Basson, Travers, Armstrong, Clements and Hasegawa. 7 out of 18 that I know of.

I believe that this weekends round is "Back to Gordon" day for colts at Chatswood against Uni. Either it is ironic or someone organizing at Gordon has a sense of humour!

Eastwood/Warringah was a close encounter as the score would suggest, both teams where well matched. Both sides lacked the poise to convert long periods of holding the ball into points. With pushed passes and poor options being the biggest contributors. Both side were good defensively but will need to improve their penetration in attack to worry the likes of Uni and Randwick. Eastwoods preference of only committing two players to the ruck in both defense and attack cost them their own ball and opportunities to counter ruck, they will be punished if they don't watch what is happening in the game and just stick to the plan. Warringah have issues at line out time, they need to work on their movements they are easy to read and Eastwood took advantage. Both scrums were solid with Warringah getting the upper hand a couple of times. Both teams didn't use the hill on the top field at TG to keep the opposition stuck in their own half when running up the hill.
The one thing the really surprised me and my son was how slow the game was, it was 2 meters slower than you would expect from Colts 1st on a fast dry field.

Read the law book on knock downs, having the ball thrown into your hand or putting your hand in the way of a pass while trying to effect a tackle is not a knock down and that is why the referee never gave a penalty for the knock down you asked for 20 times during the game.
The ball has to be knocked down. i.e. the hand goes in a downward motion.
Sorry it was just very frustrating to listen too.

The penalty is for a deliberate knock on not a knock down. The downwards motion of the hand is an indicator that no attempt to catch the ball was made. A knock up can be penalised too if it is deliberate and no attempt to catch the ball is made.

If you manage to do this 20 times in a game your assessment of timing a genuine attempt at an intercept may be a little off or your ability to inadvertently get your hand over a pass in a tackle may start to look a little cynical

The Marlins colts went fishing yesterday. initially trawling on their way to their favourite spot throwing some burly to drag out the quarry they looked to get a few nibbles without any success. dominant field position and possession was not turned into points.
eventually the wood took the bait and went for a run leaving the anglers looking a little lost when at about the 15-25 minute period the woods scored two tries to lead 12-0. The Manly lads then turned the boat and started to play the game, reeling the target back to 12 all at 35 minutes. Not satisfied with the competition the fish was let run again just before refreshments with another try to Eastwood making the score 19-12 at sandwiches.

It looked like the line had run off the reel after another two tries to Eastwood in the fifteen minutes after the break saw the lead blow out to 29-12. Manly looked like they were leaving the contest with 0 No win points no loss by 7 or less points no 4 try points The Manly lads and the quarry played each other for the next 15 with no significant sway to either party. With 10 to go in the competition the anglers started to haul the quarry in. a wide out "consolation" unconverted try to Manly with about 10 minutes to go and a visibly tiring prey gave them a sniff of a possible pair of bonus points if they could get another try in the next stanza. Manly were quickly back in the Eastwood 22 At this point the Eastwood 9 was yellow carded for repeated infringements. Given this extra advantage the Marlins exercised their scrum muscle as a penalty option, within a couple of fazes Manly was in again with about 5 minutes to go. you would think urgency may have been apparent with the conversion attempt but the manly "t" boy caught up in the moment forgot to head out with the tee. It eventually arrived and the conversion missed. I think at this time all 15 panic buttons on the field were being pushed. Manly forwards were not missing a thing the scrum was walking forward and the back hitting their passes another try within 2 minutes was nonchalantly converted in the style of a sevens game to tie up the scores at 29 a piece.
As Eastwood were taking the final kick-off the 40 minute timer went off in my pocked so this was now injury time. Manly again retained possession , recycled and made ground eventually kicking into the tennis court corner where the Eastwood winger fielded the ball about 3m from the try line with two Manly chasers on top of him, the tacklers drove the defender over the try line where he eventually lost the ball for it to be dived on by one of the Manly assailants. Manly was penalised for not releasing the tackled player.
