You'd be struggling to name more than a handful of Woodies players from out of area, and mostly they are - as you say - following their mates or for convenience. Um, Not entirely correct. It was one of your acquaintances from the Eastwood club (@Sideline Eye) that said "the vast majority" not you.

Whereas Woodies largely rely on their own home grown players year in and year out. I don't know all their origins for sure (can someone help me out here?) but pretty sure the vast majority of Woodies colties in all 3 grades came up through their junior Eastwood rep teams, and come from local schools like Epping Boys, Marist College Eastwood, Carlingford High, etc, or played for their feeder clubs like Hillview, Dural, North Rocks, Beecroft, etc. there are certainly no 'buy ins' and absolutely no scholarships or incentives for anyone outside the area.

MTB certainly has its share of defectors, but Penrith is much worse based on many of the posters in this forum. I don't mind players moving for reasons of friends or work or where they are living now, but moving to a club because you think you'll be part of a 'winning team' is a bit cynical for my liking.

However, having said that, I guess you can't blame players for being strategic in their approach and 'changing jobs' if they want to make a living out of it. Nothing different to any other part of the work force I suppose.

@Blackie, go back a few more years than the 2013 Country under 17's, but keep the cohort.

Look at the Country Zone Teams from the 2008 Under 13 and 2007 Under 12 State Champs. This will pick up all names of the Country JRU boys from that cohort before then went to the big city boarding schools, many of whom end up staying in Sydney at Uni or TAFE or with an apprenticeship after they finish school.

Also regarding what is happening at Warringah? WHy are Manly so patchy? Loss in all grades vs Parramatta.

Yeah we've had some good wins against some of the higher teams.

Manly have 3 First Grade players out with season ending injuries, Tukipili, Walker and Kaplan, and against Parramatta there were a number of players unavailable - Gourley, Williams, Verhoevan, Arnold, Morgan, Osagie, Crisp, Ladhams. Then Tahifotu and Ibbotson were injured in the first half against Parra as well.

It shouldn't be missed that a number of players from the previous years colts are now getting runs in the undefeated first grade side, and the top of the table second grade team, and the depth simply needs to be built again.

The coaches are clearly doing the building thing as at full strength we have beaten Norths, Gordon and led Uni 25-12 with 20 mins to go.

I've seen them play twice,and they are totally reliant upon 2 players.
So if 2's & 3's are cellar dwellers,and 1's are totally reliant on two star players to be competitive,that is not indicative of a strong program.

You know better than that - two players don't knock off the likes Gordon & Nths, and be up over Uni. More than just 2 players were out over the weekend.
Come on - last check Old Man Emus had a better for and against diff than the Rats, but the Emus don't even play now.

I "I" said building again because a number of colts are in 1s or 2's now and it is a cycle.

Perhaps this is the way to fund your colts system. I've heard nothing but good reports about the Randwick scholarship programme.

They'd want to name a squad of about 30 then. Quite a few lads end up with bumps and bruises from Saturday and are unable to back up on Sunday, and looking at the draw for late June, there are some big physical games there.
Also some players who carefully manage their game time may decline to nominate for this team.

Not too sure about South's actively recruiting out of the Illawarra. The four boys from Illawarra that have joined South's this year have done so of their own accord. Why are people trying to make it out as some kind of negative connotation that clubs attempt/do attract players from country zone carnival's. These players aren't poached they are in fact representing the correct pathway to follow in terms of playing in Sydney.

The real issue should be in fact that clubs should be looking after development of players in the area they represent in Sydney through Junior Rugby. There is a reason each club has a junior rep side in each age group.

I had a look at the Norths Colts side a few weeks back and they had 13 out of the 15 from country areas. People can take that as they see it.

I likewise don't see it as a problem prima faci but a symptom. The boys gets 18 very high level games, played at speed with and against players who are mostly better players than they are. Couple this with good coaching and you have the recipe for good development of the boy's rugby.
The boys having to move to the Sydney competition to get this is a symptom of the "Decline and Fall" of NSW rugby. As it retreats into smaller and smaller geographic areas and a handful of very exclusive schools what people are complaining about becomes inevitable. It's not the fault of the clubs, they're just behaving rationally given the circumstances they find themselves in, fighting over a declining resource.

I've really enjoyed this year getting around Sydney catching up the my country parent friends and having a few (but under the limit) beers whilst watching a very good quality of rugby. AND not being a team manager this year, yeh!!
Doesn't get better than that.

Because I probably won't be watching any more footy this year, For what it is worth, this far out, this is how I think it will unfold.

Southern Districts Reports - Round 12

RD 12: EASTWOOD MATCH REPORT
After a week of R & R the boys were back in training and preparing for a mini Grand Final against Eastwood at their home ground with the winner of each game edging that bit closer to strengthening their finals chances, and the losers treading a harder path into the finals.

With 18s having a week off, it was 3rds who kick-started the day. They started off well and got into the game very early, but the signs in defence were looking shaky and Eastwood had some very sharp running backs, regardless, Souths went into half time leading 12 to 10.

The 2nd half was disappointing with the Eastwood outside backs having bit of a picnic in attack and running out winners 26 to 17. We still hold our 5th position on the table but we need to improve for the game against Parramatta.

2nds were looking for revenge after the loss 3 weeks earlier and the team trained well and were looking forward to the game. Both teams came to play with Eastwood controlling the game early as Souths were living off scraps, but our defence was good, and our scrum & line outs were on song - we were able to pinch some crucial line out ball. With the scores pretty much going point for point Souths were able to kick away to an 18 to 12 halftime lead but both sides still had plenty of points in them.

The 2nd half was all about momentum swings as Souths would kick- away, Eastwood would hit back. With 8 minutes to go Souths led 26 to 24. Eastwood were on a roll, but with our set pieces working really well and Brock Hammond at 10 controlling the game, we were able to pick up a converted try and run out winners 33 to 24. The match itself was a quality game played in good spirits with both teams needing a win.

1sts was shaping up as a cracker of a game after the nail bitter 3 weeks ago. In great playing conditions, both teams started like they meant business and for the first 6 minutes Souths never saw the ball as Eastwood were able to score and take a 5 nil lead. Souths were getting plenty of tackling practice and were looking quite strong. A penalty goal to Nathan McIlveen and a great chip and chase to Rory Davis under the posts had Souths in front 10 to 5.

Souths were seeing little ball in the 1st half - you could have grazed cattle in our half, but we were able to take our chances and a nice intercept by Frank Calgulay resulted in a try in the corner to Tom Evans off nice support play by Nathan McIlveen, and a torn hammy to Franky!

Shortly after an elbow injury to Jake Lubrano gave Ben Ridgeway his 1st colts debut and he didn't let the standard drop. He drove the forwards well with a good forwards driving mall try and a 24 to 5 halftime lead.
We knew Eastwood would come back hard in the 2nd half and we had to get first points. A Nic Pennisi try and penalty goal had Souths up 34 to 5, with a further try under the posts making the score 41 to 5. Eastwood finished the game with a good consolation try to make the final score 41 to 10, a win for Souths and a good days Rugby.

A very pleasing result in 1sts and 2nds, and again 3rds were disrupted with 2 players playing grade and players on CHS rep footy etc, so hopefully a few more players back for the Parramatta game at Forshaw and hopefully the 18s will be playing so we have 4 good games of rugby to watch.

Player of the day goes to all the Players, Coaches and Managers, especially the Mums and Dads who did the club very proud at the recent Junior State Championships. Our Club is the ‘only’ one that has representative Junior District teams in every age group from U10 development through to the newly formed U18s competition.

Our junior participation, development and growth are an organic advantage envied by many other District clubs. Because of this foundation, our Colts program continues to flourish for numbers. This enables us to refrain from mass pilfering of other junior club graduates or procuring studentship entitlements to attract players.

We are excited about the local junior talent coming through in the next few years. We have a great Colts program and culture supported by our Club board. The retention and nurturing of the junior talent coming through will only make our Colts program better and stronger.
