Southern Districts Reports - Round 4

RD 4 v. Easts REPORT:
The matches against Easts were eagerly anticipated and with the sun eventually shining and Woollahra oval in good condition the rugby gods were smiling on us...... But, then the messages started of late drop outs and the cancellation of the 18s v Trinity 1st 15 due to the council saying the ground was too wet, had the bad omen alarm bells going off.

The 3rds started the day and Easts scored an early try and the Souths boys looked a bit flat but slowly they started to get into the game. The ref was making continuity for both sides hard to maintain as he had a different understanding of the break down rules to what every man women and child at the game understood the rules to be.
Souths adjusted to the ref quicker than Easts and went for their plays quicker in the ruck phase count than they wanted to, but this allowed the backs to get more ball and the Souths players posted some very nice tries and looked very impressive.

The 2nds were never in the game, early on in a game I look at the defense to gauge the attitude of the team and the defense had no urgency or clout, this allowed Easts to constantly get over the advantage line and no team can recover from this.
Our kick offs either didn't go the 10 or went out on the full and our penalty kicks were not finding touch so we just could not build any pressure. The redeeming point was we scored 4 tries so got 1 point from the 46 to 22 defeat.

1sts colts also started a bit slowly and were behind 5 nil early and this seemed to jolt the team into life. Souths off a dominate scrum that secured a number of tight heads - and a penalty try, allowed us to put on some good attacking back-line play with Rory Davis at 9 was giving some great service.
Leading 17 to 5 at halftime I felt we had the game under control and should bring home a deserved victory. Unfortunately, we gifted Easts 2 very early tries to some poor option taking on Easts general play kick returns, we then gave away a penalty conversion and found ourselves behind, where the catch up rugby kicked in.
We could not hold the ball for any phases and were repelling wave after wave of Easts attack. Down 28 to 17 with 4 minutes on the clock we finally held the ball with nice and simple hands putting William Latu over in the corner, and at 28 to 22 with seconds on the clock was there be a final get out of jail scenario?
On our 22 Rory Davis splits Easts up the middle and is tackled about 25m out from the Easts line. A couple of forward charges and with all the souths supporters fingers crossed and Easts defense shot, a kick through was put in, Easts recover the ball and kick it out dead, which ends a disappointing game.

Next week we have Sydney Uni at St Paul's oval and we need to improve in all grades or we will get our bums smacked. Player of the day go to Stuart and Marc the 3rd colts coaches on a great victory and closely followed by Lachlan Hennessy the 3rd colts captain on a good captains knock with a broken finger that gets operated on this week.

Match Reviews from Round 4

Eastwood Colts v Warringah Colts
@T.G.Milner Field, Eastwood

Colts 1
Eastwood 85 def Warringah 5

Well the monkey is finally off the back. 1st Grade Colts got the their first win off the season with a 83 to 5 win against a young Warringah side who were gallant in defeat.

The team is slowly beginning to take shape with what is being practiced each week at training.
We still have a long way to go after 4 Rounds completed and certainly shouldn't get too ahead of ourselves after the win.

Areas to note which have certainly seen an improved effort over the last week were our 1 on 1 tackling and our defensive effort. Still plenty of practice needed in both these areas but a steady improvement from where we were 5/6 weeks ago.

This week's game sees us up against it with our Western Sydney rivals Parramatta away at Granville Park.
A stern test will be thrown at us and we will certainly know we have had a match.

See you at training gentleman

Remember practice, practice, practice our basic skills week in week out is how we will improve.

Best and Fairest

Colts 2
Eastwood 56 def Warringah 5

The match opened with a tentative start from 2nds, this planted us again on the back foot, defending in our 22. First foray into Warringah territory was via quick penalty taken by our new #10 Hugh Yates. Hugh found Sam McCaffrey who outpaced the Rats defence and penetrated well into Rats territory. Hugh’s solid support effort saw him cross over for Woods first try.

Warringah quickly countered with their own try,5-5. Up to the 20minute mark, neither side was putting their stamp on the match. However as the half progressed, Woods started to feed their backline which we able to run in 4 more trys, score at the break 25-5.

Second half highlights were the last 15 minutes, where 2nds lifted intensity resulted in a further 5 trys. The intensity displayed in that period is what we need from the first whistle.

Woods try scorers – Jackson Unmack (3), Hugh Yates (2), Tom Hudson (2)Mason McKertich,Michael Arapidis, Rihann Barkley-Brown
Try conversion – Jordan Gillespie (2), Tom Hudson
3 Points Hugh Yates
2 Points Mason McKertich
1 Liam Northridge
Players Player - Mason McKertich

Special mention of the efforts of Rihann Barkley-Brown, who made his Eastwood debut from the bench. Rihann made an immediate impact on the field, via a tireless effort in support play. Including one series that resulted in his first try with the Woods.

Colts 3
Eastwood 24 def Warringah 0

With a full squad of 25 players and a dramatically improved training session during the week, the Thirds were desperate to make a new start to the season. I terms of attitude, tactics, teamwork and cohesion, we certainly were a much better team than in the previous games. However execution let us down quite badly, so many opportunities to score were squandered.

We scored quite early with Nick Carone finishing of some sustained forwards pressure, but then the first half was curtailed because of a concerning injury to a Warringah player, so by the time the second half commenced, the game was reduced to a total of 42 minutes. This made it difficult to regain momentum and achieve our goal of 4 tries for a bonus point win.

But gradually we got our act together and the good ball provided by the forwards enabled the backs to carve up the Rats and dot down three more times for our first 5 competition points and a clean sheet in defence. Jake Temm shone again with Will McManus tireless in the pack. Luke Watson starred with several runs and 2 tries and flyhalf Ryan Jensen conducted proceedings very well.

Luke Watson 2, Sam Lyndon, Nick Carone Tries, Ryan Jensen 2 Goals.

Preview - Round 5 - Colts

Eastwood v Parramatta

Colts 3
Colts 3 got their first win of the year against the Warringah side playing only their second game of the season. The final score was 24 – 0 which included their first four try bonus point and the first clean sheet in defence. A great start to the day at Millner with more success to come.

This week it is Parramatta who are sitting just a point above Eastwood on the ladder with just the one win and and an extra bonus point. They beat Southern Districts 26 – 17 in Round 2 and have had narrow losses to Manly and Norths. Last week they were unable to match the might of Randwick going down 17 – 55. We lost 10 – 24 to Randwick in Round 1 and have been working hard on our game since then resulting in our first win last Saturday.

This week we will be looking to go two from two but the game will be tough with both sides looking evenly matched though fitness may prove the deciding factor. Both sides will be looking for their second win and to stay in touch with the top six.

Colts 2
Colts 2 continued where Colts 3 left off and ran out winners 56 – 5 over the Warringah side. The win was the second in a row for Colts 2 and the winning margin sees their points differential move into positive territory. The win also puts them just two points out of the top six.

The side will be looking to go three from three when they take on the Parramatta team who have just the one bonus point against their name. Their best result so far this year was a 5 – 10 loss to Souths. They have lost their last two games by considerable margin and Eastwood should prove too strong for them this weekend.

The Norths / Easts game and the Souths / University game will have an impact on the ladder and will be watched with some interest.

Colts 1
The one step at a time approach produced our first win in Colts 1 and what a win it was beating Warringah 83 – 5. The biggest winning margin for the Club this season. It has turned our For and Against differential positive and has us just two points off sixth placed Manly. Gordon play Manly this week while the Norths / Easts clash will also have a bearing where Eastwood sit come Saturday night.

Parramatta have yet to register a point on the ladder and had a heavy loss to Randwick last outing going down 14 – 85. The momentum that has been building over the last five weeks and the confidence that comes with a win Eastwood should be primed to make it two in a row.

Parramatta will think other wise and will see Eastwood as a team they can beat after playing some this year's front runners. It should be a good clash with the side wanting it the most getting the chocolates.

Should be a great game, I think Parra has their full side on deck for the first time this year.

Colts Report Round 4
Bracewell%20Jordan225.jpg

Playing their first game on the hallowed turf of Woollahra Oval the day for Colts began with a whimper and finished with an almighty bang !

First Grade did it the hard way coming from a long way back to score a bonus point 28 to 22 victory.
They were well behind both on the scoreboard and on the field at halftime down by 17 to 5. They had trouble securing quality ball and had to rely on some rugged defence to keep them just in touch with Souths.

Halftime break did the trick and Easts lifted the tempo with the scrum improving allowing the backs some more freedom although some elementary mistakes lead to some heart stopping moments, especially towards the end.
Easts were out to a comfortable 28 to 17 lead with just on 5 minutes left and then Souths ran in a soft try against some ragged defence and the game was in the balance with Souths hard on attack in the dying moments but the firsts stood firm for another gutsy victory.
Still plenty of work to do but they showed terrific spirit in the second spell to run in some great tries.
The midfield was rock solid but the forwards had to work overtime to secure any quality possession and muscle up in defence. Still plenty of work to do but a very satisfactory result.
Corbishley%20Dayne.jpg

The team of the day was definitely the Colts seconds who powered away to an impressive 46 to 22 victory after leading 46 to 12 at one stage.
The game was really all over at halftime with Easts in control at 19 nil up. This was a splendid team effort with some thrilling running and ball handling on a solid platform laid on by the forwards all of whom performed with great distinction.

Disappointment of the day was the Thirds who clawed their way back into the match to be narrowly behind 12 to 10 and halftime and then still 2 points adrift at 17 to 15 midway through the second half before Souths blew them away running out 33 to 15 victors.

My mail is that this is not accurate at this stage, particularly the highlighted comment. From what I've been told they have been asked to show cause rather than having been turfed out.

As the GM of one of the clubs that still gets put in the basket case category by the ill informed Mosman faithful, and still fighting the fight to change the perception of everybody else, I can empathise with Penrith's plight.

As a resident of the Penrith region on and off for 25 years, I can also see first hand exactly what the community out here want in regards to their weekend sport. And to be brutally honest, Rugby is a long way down that list. My personal thoughts will remain just that but like so many things in rugby that need fixing, (my club's results this year being one of them), we need to first look within at the reasons why they're struggling and how are they (we) going to fix it?

We then need to think outside the square to increase the foothold of the game out here.

Until that happens and the vultures of Sydney rugby stop their carnivorous behaviour towards each other nothing will ever change.

There is a million people who live between Parramatta and Penrith. What I want to know is, why aren't the ARU asking why does 5% of Australia's enitre population not give 2 hoots about the game?

Press release today - Sydney Rugby Union Announcement

Sydney Premier Rugby 1st Grade Colts

The Sydney Rugby Union has stood down the Penrith 1st Grade Colts from the 2015 competition sighting concerns in relation to Duty of Care, player welfare and eligibility under the ARU’s Senior Rugby Policy.

The SRU Board has acknowledged the good work being done by the Penrith Club, particularly their focus on 2nd and 3rd Grade Colts where performances have been encouraging. To enable the program to continue the SRU will allow the Club to withdraw the 1st Grade Colts team without penalty.

The Club is encouraged to continue to field eligible teams in 2nd and 3rd Grade Colts and with players from the 1st XV filtering down it is expected that these teams will be most competitive.

Further to this action the SRU has invited Penrith to nominate a team in the Under 18’s competition being conducted in association with the SJRU for the remainder of the season. This would allow the many Under 18 players registered with Penrith a chance to compete against their own age group.

The SRU will not allow opposition Clubs to play regular 1st Grade Colts players in lower grades against Penrith and it is expected that all Clubs will comply with this direction.

The NSWRU is currently undertaking a detailed review of Western Sydney Rugby with Senior Development Manager Michael Doyle assessing the games status and potential in Western Sydney. Michael will continue to assist the Penrith Rugby Club during the 2015 season.

That is great news. Common sense that some on here have been promoting for some time.

Assume that the Competition table will be rejigged in Colts 1 in some manner to make the ladder fair.
Probably give Uni, MMM, Hobbits and Shoremen a 4T BP 28-0 victory for their match against The Bye (Penrith) with the same treatment being also given for the future games against The Bye, noting that some clubs will not get the chance of playing The Bye twice. Life is like that sometimes.

5/6 last week but with mostly wildly inaccurate margins (again).

Round 5 Tips
Home team rules this week.

Gordon v Manly. Match of the round. Manly will be keen to prove that they are the real deal, having pushed The Corporation last week, but they have been inconsistent. Highlanders will fancy their chances having gone closer to toppling The Corporation and should win by 5 - 10 after a real ding dong battle.

Northern Suburbs v Eastern Suburbs. While the Beasties scored the upset of the round last week against the Hobbits, Norths look to be too good across the park and shouldn't be troubled as they cruise to a 4T BP victory by 20+ points.

Parramatta v Eastwood. M2B will be extremely disappointed with their performance last week, and keen to resume the form from early rounds that saw them go close to getting chocolates in the early rounds. While there was an impressive scoreline from Woodies last week against Rats, they have been rather inconsistent so far. Toughest game to pick and Hugh's magic coin says Parramatta in a tight one with Woodies getting 2 BP.

Randwick v The Bye. The Wicks will be untroubled and should get maximum points with little chance of getting their line crossed.

Sydney University v Southern Districts. The Corporation will be too good for the Hobbits, but both teams seem to have better defences than we saw last year in their 60 - 50 points (or thereabouts) match. Students by 10 - 15.

West Harbour v Warringah. Quite a poor performance from the Rats so far. Pirates should have a comfortable victory by > 15 points with a 4T BP.

Jeez,it didn't take long to sort the wheat from the chaff.
The top 5 look pretty much decided already.
6th place between Marlins,Beasts & Woods.
And the final 3 to struggle.
