Eastwood v Randwick

Colts 1

Well what an initiation to 1st Grade Colts Rugby. Premiers from 2015, Randwick certainly started off the season in the same form as they finished 2014. They gave our team a lesson on how to play running rugby, capitalise on our mistakes and turn our basic elementary mistakes into points.
Welcome to the hard realities of Senior club football.
Basic skills hurt as badly and our focus particularly in the first half handed the game to the opposition. The second half saw us show some true commitment to the cause and certainly gave the coaches some glimmer of what’s to come if we can all commit to training, play to our game plan and all stay on the same page.
Final score 63 to 10 with a second half certainly showing that the boys have plenty of ticker giving a credible performance but unfortunately the horse had bolted.
Positive points out of the day were our commitment at the breakdown and the development of a decent maul.
All is not lost gentleman.
Randwick are the benchmark and we need to lift.
Practice, practice, practice is the key and put that commitment to match day.
Man of match – Daniel Cosgrove
Play of the day Award
Breakdown on ball – Jacob Bamford

Eastwood v Randwick

Colts 2

Randwick 22 Eastwood 10
From the kick-off to the 25 minute mark saw both sides sizing each other up, in the contest as to who would be good enough to secure first competition points. Randwick proved to want to make the better start, and through their grinding efforts, and set pieces raced to a 17 -0 lead at half time.
The half time break allowed 2nds to regather, and for the first 20 minutes of the 2nd half, 2nds really stepped up, and we saw a completely different display. Ably led by Jackson #8 Jackson Unmack, who topped the hits ups, scored a try, and shared the top tackle count with James Sarks #10.
Highlights of the early stages of the second half included the line breaks achieved by Denzel Singleton #15, who proved at times, too strong for the Wicks defence. Momentum remained in 2nds favour, though good finishing and determined running from replacement #14, Tom Koodrin, who scored out wide to see the margin narrowed to 17-10, anyone’s game.
The turning point proved to be…. not the penalty count, or the Red Card…. we didn’t finish the way we started the 2nd Half.

Eastwood v Randwick

Colts 3

Despite a less than ideal preparation for the game, the 3rds started impressively, scoring the opening try and missing a chance soon after to take a two try lead. Randwick then wore us down with some energetic play and our few missed tackles, to lead 3 tries to one at the break.
In the second half we staged something of a comeback, and both teams scored one more try. Duncan Ryan came on and his powerful surges inspired the team. Lachlan Johnson and Nathan Watson followed his lead up front and in the backs Jordan Gillespie as half and captain passed, tackled, covered and exhorted his team in a tremendous captain’s display. Jordan won Players’ Player and MVP.
Whilst we looked to be a bit light on both on the field and on the bench, against a physically impressive and confident Randwick team who were able to bring on numerous fresh reserves, the spirit, commitment and application were admirable and all players can hold their heads high after a gutsy effort.

Under 20's update?

Apparently a couple of the State U20's dribbled back into Colts last weekend. Already mentioned on this thread were cameos from Dunbar and Yassmin for BuildCorp, and a possible appearance for Player X for the Woodies. If the team lists on Rugby Link are to be believed, Fifita and Starkey pulled on a jumper for the Wicks in their Colts 1s.

The 12 NSW players in the Extended Australian U20 squad would probably be looking for gigs in Grade (if they weren't already there from last year like Orr, Tulloch, Jones and Kellaway were).

Where will Francis Brown be? Playing Terrigal Trojan Seniors in the Central Coast comp, or has someone encouraged him to join one of the big city clubs?

Similar questions for Josh Vainikolo, Phillip Bradford, and Blake Walsh from NSW Country Colts that made Barbarians U20s.

Which of the State U20's has been given the pass to go to Grade and which will be remaining in Colts for Season 2015?

Game 1 Match report from the Gordon Rugby website:

Colts Report - Round 1 vs. Easts

With 4 teams and over 80 boys registered for Gordon Colts, this season is already looking promising. The boys took on Easts at Mingara Regional Athletics Centre and from the outset it was evident that the Easts boys weren’t use to not just crossing the Harbour Bridge, but also the Brooklyn Bridge.

3rd XV:
Gordon Colts 3rds won in a tough encounter, 27-15, with stand out performances from Sam Mete (winger), showing some lighting quick feet, Dave Balcomb (fullback), kicking goals from literally anywhere on the field and Jono Burke (hooker), with a tenacious performance up front.

2nd XV:
With the high number of boys registered to play for Gordon this year, it is without doubt that the 2nds Colts are pretty much as good as their counterpart in the 1sts. Coached by a dynamic and slightly contrasting father and son Phipps duo, the 2nds Colts looked slick and sharp straight from the kick off, putting on 2 tries within the first few minutes. However, the sausage rolls that the boys consumed before the game must have kicked in, which saw them slow down a little while Easts levelled the scoring. The boys dominated most of the game, however lapses in concentration became evident for the most part. Final score was a draw 17-17. Honourable mentions go to Jordan Thomas (winger) for scoring a double, and Lachlan Brock (outside centre) for also crossing the line. Well done boys.

1st XV:
Anticipation and a few nerves kicked in for the Gordon 1st Colts as they headed into the sheds to put on their jerseys. Coached under David Telfer, specialist coaches Robbie Barnard and Grant McLellan, and captained by James Lough (number 8), it was clear that the team were out to prove themselves. With nearly half the team being Gordon Juniors they sure didn’t lack cohesion, and through a dominant scrum, a nice pass and a bit of pace, Gordon took the lead 7-0 in the opening moments. However, similar to the 2nds, the 1sts lost concentration and Easts scored a runaway try, levelling the game. Gordon persisted and dominated field position, and off lightening quick ball Dave Smerdon (fly half) put James Dainton (inside centre) through and gap and Dainton drew the fullback and returned the favour to deliver Smerdon with his second try for the day. Gordon 14 Easts 7. With a few fresh legs and a few sausage rolls to regain some energy for the props, Gordon returned in the second half and scored a well-deserved forwards try, pick and driving until Brett Van Zyl (res. number 8) squeezed his way through the two Easts props (what a challenge that was) and gave the Gordon boys another 5 points. A dangerous tackle by Kurtis Quinn (winger) unfortunately saw him in the bin for 10 minutes and Easts capitalised on the opportunity, creating a tight game. Despite the set-back, Gordon rallied and scored a neat double flick pass play down the blind side, eventually ending with Andrew Bligh (fullback) throwing a classy behind the back pass to put Nic Burkett (blind side flanker) in for a meat pie. Gordon scored another try a few minutes later, with strong defensive pressure and a neat pickup saw Sam Tabuatamata (res. Centre) running away with the game, Gordon taking the win 29-19. Other standouts included Jake Pierce (open side flanker) and James Wilkinson (hooker), contributing with storming runs and superb tackles. The boys were a bit rusty singing the club song, so let’s hope that Telfer spends a bit of time coaching the boys in that aspect – if you ever talk to him then ask to see his archive tapes of him dancing in excitement when scoring under the posts and belting the club song at the top of his voice – a real spectacle.

Southern Districts are leading the competition with 2 victories.
Wests, Parramatta, Randwick, Manly, Sydney University and Gordon also have teams in the competition.

There seem to be lots of byes in the U18 competition, probably due to the concept that the U18 games only seem to go ahead when both the regular Colts Clubs have an U18 team.

What games have been played have all been close with the biggest victory margin being 3 points.

The Mighty Two Blues Colts Reports

Out of the Blue 28th March,2015
A big day for Colts at Merrylands Rugby Park. The day started off with the Under 18’s playing against Southern Districts then progressed on to First grade Colts at 3pm. Once again Merrylands Rugby Park was a picture and well prepared by the ground staff. Mike Baird slipped in to wish all the boys well and speak his election promise to support the west. He promised us a ground up grade with a stadium, a new canteen and function rooms if he won the State elections..........we wish!

The Under 18’s are new to the club competition this year. They have some big forwards and pace out wide. At half time the 18’s were down 15-0 mainly due to a number of missed tackles. There was a yellow card to Souths for a shoulder charge and this ignited our side bringing a try with a good pass from Parra No.8 to our wing. The conversion was successful Souths 15 Parra 7. The 18’s were on a roll and the Parra Fullback scored a great 60 metre individual try. Souths 15, Parra 14. Unfortunately Parra then let Souths back into the game after Souths spread left to Woodville Rd corner and again scored. Souths 20, Parra 14. Another try shortly after took Souths to 25-14. Parra 18’s however, were not done and scored a good try in the McDonalds corner of the oval. Final score Southern Districts 25 Parra 19. The 18’s played strongly and with a little bit more go forward from the pack and fitness could have brought home the bacon. Well done boys.

Third Grade Colts started slowly with Southern Districts crashing over for try in the first 5 minutes using their forwards. Souths converted. Souths 7, Parra 0. Third Colts are a very balanced side with forwards who like to pick and drive and a half who runs off them has a nice flat pass to his forwards and backs. It was good to watch the excellent forward rushes. Colts 3rds first try comes from attacking the Southern Districts line in the right hand corner running south. Half –time score Souths 7 Parra 5.
The second half starts well with the Colts full of running. The forwards and backs continuing to link together in strong exchanges enabling Parra to score again. Parra 14, Souths 7. Souths hit straight back with good forward control and they score. The conversion fails. Parra 14, Souths 12. Parra go left in a strong attacking mode and score. Parra 19. Parra are happy but are just hanging on when South score again. Parra 19, Souths 17. Souths conversion fails. Souths drop the ball and there is a Parra scrum 35 metres out. Parra form a rolling maul and take the tackles. Third’s pass the ball wide. There are only minutes to go as Parra turns the ball over to Souths. The ref singles a Souths scrum. Parra take a tight head and score. The conversion is successful. Final score Parra 26 Southern Districts 17. Congratulation’s Coach Robbo who could be Brad Arthur’s twin brother.

Second Grade Colts have a dream start and score in the first 5 minutes. The forwards pick and drive and then spin the ball left to the backs who score in the southern Woodville Rd corner. The conversion is unsuccessful Parra 5 Souths yet to score. Parra 2nd’s are into running rugby and are prepared to attack from their own 22. Parra has all the possession and Souths never really look threatening. Parra’s effort is finally rewarded with a penalty in front of the sticks. The ball skews left. A missed opportunity, hopefully it does not cost us. Parra goes to break 5-0
Parra are still in control but our score doesn’t reflect our possession. Our Prop is yellow carded. It’s now 15 against 14 with the advantage to Souths. The Boys continue to play good football. The game starts to change as Souths are piggy backed to the Parra line with a succession of penalties. It’s not long before Souths score, Souths 7 Parra 5. Parra is again yellow carded and Souths convert. Final score Southern Districts 10 Parra 5. Parra led for 90% of the game and were definitely the stronger side. Disappointing guys, take it out on Norths next week.

First Grade Colts - Southern Districts start the game very impressively with a try disallowed in the first 5 minutes after very good attacking raid. Souths look quick across the park and gave the impression it was only time before they would score. Parra, however, had a different idea as our wing scored in the left hand corner of the oval after a good backline movement. Parra 5, Souths 0. Parra’s next try was a great one with the ball being held up long enough for the final pass to be let off loaded to a runner beside the posts. Parra convert and lead 10-0. Parra then score another try out wide in the right hand corner. Parra go to the break 17-0. It was a great first half and very well played by Parra.
Like all games there is a second half. The Souths coach must have given his side a strong “G” as Souths come out firing. We lose a player for throwing a punch for 10 minutes. In my day punching was almost expected. Souths are on a roll, they spread the ball wide to the left to the club house. It is a certain try as Souths streak for the line. Parra’s covered defence is equal to the task as the Souths winger stretches out to score. The Parra defence puts him into touch over the line in the in goal. The winger is pushed out as he plants the ball down. The ref is unsighted on the far side. He does not go to the touch judge but awards the try. All call foul as the rugby god’s leaves us. The Souths kicker converts form the side line adding insult to injury. There is no justice. Parra 17, Souths 7. Souths are on the way back. Souths are awarded penalty which they convert. Parra 17, Souths 10. I can’t even tell what the penalty was for. I was still too upset over the no try. The game is in the balance a break from either side was going to win the game. Unfortunately it came from Souths No.8 busted us apart up the middle for a set great individual try. The game was slipping away from our grasp. Parra 17, Souths 17. All the Parra supporters were all on their feet. Souths with help were exerting a lot of pressure. Parra 2nds were camped in their own 22 and defending their line. Parra were strong caused turn-overs while Souths were attacking. Parra took the ball into the maul. The ref calls use it or lose it. Our player can’t get the ball out even though we are going forward. A 5 metre scrum with a Souths put in. Souths should have been penalised for not rolling away in the ruck. Souths score beside the posts. Souths 24, Parra 17. I am not even going to talk about conspiracy theories as Souths are awarded another penalty. The contest is over, we can’t even come up with a draw. Final score Southern Districts 27 Parra 17. A good game Boys that got away from you.

I only seem to see 5 on the table?

Bit worrying that a club like Penrith couldn't enter a side in this. The great advantage of this competition is it is not influenced by schoolboy representation in terms of the clubs chasing these players and players are more likely to play for the local village club.

Eastwood (would have thought they could get together the numbers from local public school students), Easts (highest representation of private school players I would think), Warringah, Norths (just don't have big juniors so not sure where they would get the numbers from) are the other clubs judging by your above post.

I do think there are massive benefits for each club that does this right and gets a team/competitive team in terms of players numbers and strength in the future.

I think that there are only 5 teams in the Buddha Competition table because they are the only ones that have had a game so far.

The draw section of Buddha has The Corporation up against the Highlanders this weekend, with Wicks, Hobbits, MMM, M2B and Pirates all playing against The Bye.

In Colts rounds 1 and 2, The Corporation have played Penrith and Easts, and Gordon have played Easts and Woodies. Penrith, Easts and Woodies don't have teams in U18 so there has not been any 11am U18 game before Colts 3rds for BuildCorp or Highlanders so far.

I think the Emus could field an U18 team, but that would have been at the expense of their Colts 3 team. The decision appears to have been to use their U18's as Colts 3rds, with a few school leavers to make up the numbers. That way the boys will get 18 games, and not an abbreviated U18 season, which according to some sources may be likely to finish at the June Long Weekend.

Match reports
Colts 1

A frustrating match for players, coaches and supporters alike to watch.
The opposing coaches comment after the match was that we 'Gordon' we're very lucky to win that! Yes lucky but for us, one hard to stomach. We as coaches have seen a marked improvement from last week. The focus and commitment to working on areas that are letting us down including our defensive structure, one on one tackles and good placement of the ball at the breakdown are getting better.
There is plenty of work to do in the coming weeks.
We had trained solidly at training during the week and gave a spirited display. The match was in the balance till the last 10 minutes.
Eastwood dominated the 2nd half and every time we started to gain dominance by field position and keeping to our structure, poor options allowed the opposition back into the match.
Opportunities went begging throughout the half.
The need for us as a group to be disciplined is paramount for our upcoming matches against West Harbour and Warringah. We need to keep working on the basics and practice the little things, so our game can improve. Practice makes perfect and then transfer it to our game on Saturday is most important.

Colts 2

Camped in our 22 for the first 10 minutes was not the start we were after. When we did manage to break out, first points went to Woods through a penalty conversion by Sam McCaffrey. As the game progressed, it seemed that our error rate from round 1 revisited us, and this allowed Gordon to go the break with a 12-3 margin.
In the early stages of 2nd half, Zack Simpson secured a line out win. Sam McCaffrey injected himself into the back line, followed by some cool handling from Luke Watson, and great support play from James Sarks, saw James go in under the posts. Woods close the gap, 10-12. Not for long, with Gordon capitalising on what seems the be never ending chain of Woods errors, 10-24. From there…2nds dig deep, with try’s resulting from barging storming Duncan Ryan, and Matthew Batholomew, through an opening thanks to James Sarks footwork. This brought 2nds within striking distance with 5 minutes to go 20-24.

Final minutes…Woods error let them in…again
2nd half …improved team effort…overall game perspective.. our error rate must come down.

Colts 3

Gordon totally dominated territory and possession throughout the first half and we failed to tackle well enough to stem the flow. Consequently they ran in several unanswered tries and we were left licking our wounds at the break.
In the second half we were far more determined and put up much more stoic resistance, but Gordon were still able to cross the stripe for a few more tries. We also played some positive rugby, running from anywhere on the field to give us some time with the ball. Jake Temm played impressively and won Players’ Player. In the midfield Tom Graham did his best to tackle anything in tartan, but overall our defensive patterns and individual tackling were deficient.
It’s easy to decide what to work on at training this week and we look forward to becoming more proficient and competitive in all aspects of play.

Preview : Round 3 - Colts

Eastwood v West Harbour @ Concord Oval
Colts 3
Gordon stamped their authority in Colts 3 making up for not having a team in this grade in recent years. They were too good for Eastwood winning 52 – 0. West Harbour are also without a win after two rounds and lost to Randwick 0 – 53 last week. In the first round Eastwood also lost to Randwick with a 10 – 24 scoreline. Both sides will be keen to get some points on the board this weekend. On those results Eastwood appears to have the edge but it should be a close tussle in the opening game of the day at Concord Oval.
Colts 2
Both sides sit at the bottom of the ladder and will be looking for their first win. In Round One Eastwood lost 10 – 22 to Randwick and lost 20 – 29 to Gordon last week. West Harbour were sounding beaten by Randwick last week 7 – 66. On these results Eastwood should record their first win of the season.
Colts 1
After the big loss against Randwick in Round One Eastwood did well to gain their first point of the season with a 17 – 22 loss to the more fancied Gordon. A great improvement and it should give them confidence going into this week's round.
West Harbour have had two big losses in the opening rounds. Going down 5 – 44 against Norths and 12 – 69 last Saturday against Randwick. The result against Randwick is similar to ours and both sides will consider themselves a chance this weekend. It will require a fully committed effort from Eastwood but on last week's results they can take their first win of the season.

(Given recent discussions in this thread, I note that the majority of these boys are Eastwood Juniors / local lads playing for their local club. I haven't got a breakdown, but perhaps someone else more knowledgeable about their pedigree can provide one?)

Colts Report - Round 2 Gordon vs. Eastwood
By David Smerdon - Colts 1st Fly Half

A real achievement from the Gordon Colts this weekend, with all 3 grades getting over the line with a win against Eastwood at TG Milner, while remaining undefeated across the park.

Credit must go to the coaching staff for working tirelessly to get the Gordon 4th Colts a game each week for the rest of the season – joining the U’18 competition – playing at the same ground as the rest of the boys each week.

Gordon 3rd Colts:
Gordon 3rd Colts ran rampant on the weekend, scoring a total number of tries nearly exceeding the number of fingers on 2 hands. Further credit goes to the team for not just showing a superb attacking performance, but also a solid defensive performance, keeping the Eastwood boys to nil for the entire game. Final score was 52-0, with standout performances from dynamic and fast Marcus Hundt (centre), leading point scoring sensation Dave Balcomb (fullback) and directive Ben Tracey (fly half). Brandon Fernandes (prop) also had a great game – picking up some substantial running metres, while crossing the line for a try and being a brick wall in defence.

Gordon 2nd Colts:
After settling for a draw last week, the Gordon 2nds Colts were out for a win, and with a few minutes to go it looked as though another draw may be ahead of them, however thanks to Marcus Hundt (res utility back) the boys took the lead and held on to win 29-20 in a tough match. Big man and coach Steve Phipps was happy with his boys after the game, reiterating the fact that they stuck to their structure and patterns well in the second half, and really kicked it up a gear when looking tired with 10 minutes to go. The forwards laid a solid platform up front allowing the backs to shine, with Kirt Anthony (outside back) darting over for a try and Marcus Hundt injecting himself well, crossing the try line more than once. Rob Lacinski (prop) also did well to get his first meat pie, with an individual display of brilliance, fending and side stepping defenders left, right and centre, all from 5 metres out. Well done boys!

Gordon 1st Colts:
This weekend’s game against Eastwood saw the return of Jack Bowditch into the front row, and a shift in the backline saw Samuel Tabuatamata get his run on at inside centre. However, all eyes were on Sean Dillon (prop), as he came out onto the field to face his old teammates and boy were they out to get him. After a fiery exchange of big hits from either team, it was the Gordon boys who crossed the white line first, with a clever offload down the far side, a small line-break from James Lough (number 8/captain) and quick ball recycling through the backs, saw the play ending with Benny Butler (wing) dive in the corner for a 5 pointer. James Dainton (fly half) slotted the conversion form the sideline to give the boys an early 7-0 lead. However, together with gut instinct and poor defensive position, Eastwood hit back off a midfield scrum inside Gordon’s 22 and levelled the scoring.
The second half saw more yellow cards than a soccer game, and fortunately they were all in favour of the Gordon boys, with a few Eastwood players being sent off for dangerous tackles and repeated infringements close to the line. Gordon took advantage of the fewer opposition players and vice captain Josh Mitchell (centre) screamed for an offload and off he went – 40m untouched and diving for a try. Further tries went to Jack Bowditch (prop) storming through defenders with a great display of strength and a second for Ben Butler saw the Gordon boys finish the game on top, 22-17. Mentions must go to reserve centre Sione Afu for lifting the boys and adding a great amount of aggression when coming off the bench (even getting involved in goal line ruck defence), and Nic Burkett (flanker) despite playing sick, displayed vigour and tenacity for the entire first half before coming off. The 1st Colts took away with them a lot of positives from the game, and as for the negatives, they’ll be turned into positives by next weeks game.

Next weekend’s games see the Gordon Colts take on Sydney University; a real test but a great opportunity for the boys to display their talent against a highly regarded team. Up the Stags!

Penrith's U18's colts are all playing colts 2 and colts 3 - and all are still U17 players.
