Honestly I dont see either Tom Connor or Mark Baldwin starting much First Grade throughout the year unless injury occurs, but I do see them playing games off the bench. It is believed Stephen Hoiles will join Randwick in this year's Shute Shield competition and with the stocks of Seilala Lam and Tim McGann there it would be tough to crack a spot. Although they are in a good position to learn and develop.
I was assuming Baldwin was playing colts ?

that's some serious depth though!

Did anybody watch the Sydney Uni vs Vikings colts trial on the weekend? Any standouts from either side ???

Uni a much bigger side ,dominated the first half , aided by a string of penalties , which kept the Vikings in their own quarter , & resulted in 4 or 5 tries against them.
The second half was much more closely contested , & much of the game was played in Uni's end of the ground.
Best players for Vikings were the half , loose head & inside centre.Their team hung in well under attack & are quite mobile , not surprising given their relative
lack of size.Defended well overall , even though the final score was something like 30 -0 .
For Uni , no individual stood out for me , but their backs were slick & well schooled as a group , & their big outside centre was damaging at times.

I assume the outside centre you refer to is Scott Goodman who is having a run with Uni this year. A big unit who could go well if fit.

Wests drew with Easts 3 tries a piece. Wests were quite dominate with ball in hand but i think their fitness let them down. Were leading 3 tries to 1 when about 10 subs came on in the latter stages of the 2nd half.

Easts called for uncontested scrums in first & third grade , which in the former , allowed them to stay competitive , particularly as the referee did
not apply or perhaps did not know the appropriate rules to apply under these circumstances.

In the know I think.

Can't blame Easts, I have stood infront of the Wests pack and they are the biggest I have seen in the last 15 years. Well coached by scrum specialist Villi Ala'alatoa. The set piece will be dominant but fitness will be the issue.

Norths played Warringah - won 2nds and 3rds comfortably but lost 1sts by 2 points. Can't read too much into it, I got the impression that Warringah weren't as far down the training path as Norths - hence large scores ain 2's and 3's, and Norths were experimenting a fair bit. Both teams will be a lot better come comp time. Norths definitely stronger, across all grades, to last year.

The rats traditionally have a dozen or so unavailable pre season due to Surf life saving nationals. They should be a lot stronger in a couple of weeks

Watched the Easts game obviously , & from what I observed ,Wests biggest blokes were in the 2nds.

Randwick won 1st colts 7 tries to 1 against Southern Districts. Souths got a very early try and shortly afterwards the Randwick 10 was crunched in a tackle resulting getting badly concussed and needed ambulance attention and is ok but spending a couple of days in hospital having some tests
After the injury the game was changed to about 25 to 30 minutes each way and Randwick started to get on top and in the 2nd half put on some of there better players and scored about 5 tries and making breaks at will. Souths have some good size forwards but a rickety scrum and backs have a go with Asquith in the centres the catalyst of there attack. They looked a bit unfit and Randwick looked like they had spent the summer in the gym and on the training paddock souths looked like they had a much easier summer. Souths will make teams earn there points but can't see them beating the top teams but could be fighting for 6th spot which would set them up for 2013 as they are a very young group.

Hope wests dont just rely on size, again. They need to develp a more complete style of play. They have had big blokes in colts and grade for years with limited success

I heard that Easts refused to kick out of their territory so that they could practise their defence.

Saturday sees the two grandfinalists from 2011 lock horns again when Uni and Eastwood meet. It will be interesting to see how the off seaon recruiting has gone for both sides and it should provide an early season guide to form. Eastwood seem to have recruited well and could present a real challenge to Uni this year.

It is also the GF replays from 2010, 2007, 2006 & 2005. No doubts Ewood & Uni can be penciled in for the finals.

Saw the Manly - Eastwood trial last weekend and I was not that impressed with Eastwood. They had lots of players there and were able to run on fresh reserves during all games - a great advantage given the heat of the day. Even with this Manly were able to beat them 6 tries to 5 in the firsts trial and Eastwoods score was helped late in the game with a couple of tries.
