We had the white card system in Varsity Cup which worked very well. Look like S15 rugby will use some of it in a different manner

TMOs may guard S15 foul play

The International Rugby Board (IRB) recently announced that two tournaments - one in each hemisphere - would be used on a trial basis to enable Television Match Officials (TMOs) to point out foul play to referees during games, which would see referees hand out yellow or red cards on the TMO's advice.

The Northern Hemisphere's Heineken Cup will be the first tournament to use the rule and according to the Volksblad newspaper, the Super Rugby tournament could follow suit next season.

"There must still be decided what tournament in the Southern Hemisphere the new technology will be used in, but hopefully it's in the Super Rugby tournament," South African referees manager André Watson said.

"It is good to use technology where it could be of assistance and I support it 100%. However, I fear that most people won't realise that it won't be infallible.

The IRB is yet to decide how the rule would be implemented. The first option is for the referee to decide when he would want to refer possible foul play to the TMO, while the second option would be for each of the two captains to receive one referral per match.

Watson feels a combination of the two options could work. "One must remember that the captain can't always see everything that happens on the field and won't always be able to make a call to refer the incident," said Watson.

However, Watson warned that the system won't be 100% foolproof. "If a referee and a TV-ref both miss the incident, it will go by unpunished.

"The use of it will also largely depend on the broadcaster involved and its 'replay' image," said Watson
The more the better.

White card used in Varsity Cup
The white card innovation allows captains to challenge a decision by the referee, who will then refer the matter to the television match official (tmo).

Each captain may lodge one appeal in each half by showing a white card.

If the TMO rules that the referee made a mistake, or that the referee overlooked an infringement, the captain will have another one chance to use the white card in that half.

However, if the captain's challenge is overturned, he forfeits the right for another white card in that half.

Expect it wont work like that totally, pretty much the same as the referal system in cricket and expect the 3 refs may have the option to use it whenever they suspect foul play.

I guess I support this. The current rule for TMO is very frustrating. There's an obvious bit of offisde / forward pass / foul play, but if all the ref asks about is: "foot in touch" then he TMO is fucked.

On the other hand, I wouldn't mind canning all technology and just copping on the chin whatever the ref says.

Not many of this type Doc, protected specie!

Paarl, perhaps you haven't watched too much NRL from Australia. 90% of tries get referred to the TMO, who then agonises over whether players were onside, whether an attacking player touched the ball forward when leaping to catch a kick, with about 4 pairs of hands all around the ball, whether defenders were obstructed, was it a double movement, etc, etc, etc. It can go on for minutes and really breaks the rhythm of the game. And then they still make obvious mistakes. It doesn't take too much of that to have you yearning for the pre-technology days.

It takes too long for sure but the decision process can be sped up. I don't know why it takes so long? You generally only need 2 replays to get a definitive result, I pull my hair out every time they keep replaying and replaying and then still take an extra 20 secs to say "You may award the try". As soon as you see a grounding tell the ref to blow his fucking whistle, I'm talking within seconds of seeing the ball grounded none of this "...are you there" "yes" "the ball was grounded" "so can I award the try" "you may award the try" "thank you" the communication is instant so why can't they award the try as soon as the ball is grounded? Would make the process so much quicker.

I prefer them to take the 4 seconds to confirm rather then blow straight away and fuck it up.

I hate all the TMO crap. It takes too long and the decisions are made on evidence which is rarely conclusive anyway!

Let the refs / assistants make a decision based on their observations and leave it at that
Offences seen on the replays requiring a card should be left to the post match review panel to deal with

Been saying it for years, it's ruining the game

You have also qouting this after the WC final
Jourbert had a shit first 20 mins and it affected the outcome. The standard of reffing at the whole tournament was terrible so the performance seemed appropriate

Its confusing to say the least and sound like the usual ref basher. Here we can get at least something to help get the right desicion which every single player wants and you still is negative.

Paarlbok, i realise theirs a language barrier but surely you understand theirs a difference between my concerns with jouberts performance in the final and the delay and inaccuracy of the TMO system? Or are you suggesting the TMO powers are extended to offsides, rucks, scrums? Wouldnt that be a pleasure to watch..... NOT
