Super Rugby Round One: Reds vs Waratahs. Suncorp Feb 24

Happy to have a crack at the Reds team. I imagine it’ll be pretty predictable.

Ravai Faessler Nonggorr
Smith Uru
Wright McReight Wilson
McDermott Lynagh (won’t be surprised if McLaughlin-Phillips gets the gig)
Vunivalu Paisami Flook Petaia
Campbell

I’ve ended up going with Vunivalu on the wing even though I think Greany’s form warrants it a bit more. But it adds a bit of size to the backline which we probably need and Grealy’s game should provide good impact off the bench. I still think there is a good case to start Grealy though.

Nasser
Hodgeman
Fa’agase
Daly
Bryant
Thomas / Werchon - I feel this one in particular comes down to what the coaches are seeing at training and what they want
McLaughlin-Phillips
Grealy

Mostly pretty predictable. I feel like there is no need for any surprise selections. The props could be configured differently but given the way props are used I don’t think it’s a big deal who starts and who finishes.

Creighton might get a bench gig as he covers 10/12/15 a bit better.

First game is a big opportunity for the Reds - home game, relatively low injury list (touch wood), a fair bit of stability across the squad - even with coaching changes I think that’ll be important.

@RugbyReg Shit. Very strong as usual.

Reds by 13.

I'm not expecting Les Kiss and his team to come in and have a amazingly smooth transition. There will be hiccups, but this seems to be a very settled side. That seems odd to say before a game has been played.

The only spot really wide open is flyhalf. I wish we had a little more grunt in the second row and Nongoor hasn't kicked on as much as I jad hoped.

Doran has Petaia getting first crack at 15, Lynagh at 10:

I'd prefer Campbell at fullback but Petaia should still go well. Happy to see Lynagh start and McLaughlin-Phillips eased in. Hopefully he gets some time off the bench.

Also Walton to start at 15 for the tahs, I reckon he might be in for a few sleepless nights between now and Saturday with vision of Paisami running over the top of him playing repeat in his dreams.

i don’t see the reds carrying specialist flyhalfs on the bench / just to get some game time. It’s either lynagh or HMP.

Jock and Petaia was a tough call probably for Les, but jock can play fb, wings and flyhalf so he probably 1 of 2 or 1 of 3 backs in a bench of 8.

what worries me about Petaia/Vunivalu in the back 3 is Max Jorgenson, cover D isn’t exactly their forte (more explosive weapons on attack) need Grearly on the other wing as he has ticker to chase down Jorgenson.
