Well done Tahs. Played good, but Lions were rubbish. Never threatened the defensive line at all.
Harrison had a much better game; HJH (Harry Johnson-Holmes) coming into form; Bell very impressive in open play. That was enough to put the Lions away.

Where has that been? i mean, i get it. The Lions were poor. But the link play for the Tahs tries was fucken phenomenal and few teams would have stopped them.
Been pleasantly surprised with Australian play tonight. I felt moments in both games where historically we would crack we weathered it rather than falling away.
Thought Harrison was really good. His offload for the second last try was not something you'd expect a youngster to try let alone pull off. Lovely.
Beale was what Beale is. Fucking irritating. He can't tackle or kick but fuck he can attack a broken defensive line. I doubt he'll make the Wallabies again but it's at least enjoyable to watch his shenanigans at Super level.

Well, that surprised me. Perhaps as much as anything else the aggression, line speed and accuracy in defence, a real attitude turn-around from a fortnight ago. Attack was also much more accurate, passing was better, handling better (sure, much better conditions), players running onto the ball. The set piece, while they didn't dominate, certainly held their ground.
Plenty of good individual performances. Bell and HJH (Harry Johnson-Holmes) are two really good young props with their whole career ahead of them, Hooper was back to his best after being a little off against the Rebels, ands Swinton and Dempsey both had strong games. Harrison really stepped up, a great performance, hat's off to Penney for sticking with him, he showed us what was potentially there. Hunt had a good first half, both wings had good moments, and Beale was, as Derpus says, Beale, brilliant one minute, awful the next.
A couple of things to work on. Defence around the edges of the ruck when under the pump. It's no good just getting up and waiting for someone to run at you, you have to concentrate, and look at where you have to be. Surely they train for that. Too much silly kicking when we were in a good attacking position in the second half. And the goal kicking, fuck!!! Most under 11 sides have better kicking records than that. Kurtley's didn't even look close.

Admittedly I'm a Hooper fan, but I really enjoyed his multiple skills on show all game. Defence, turnovers, link man - it was all on show tonight. he still gets cleaned out at the breakdown though.

So much of that game was about attitude. Still a lot of rough edges but there was a lot of build off. I'll digest that one and reflect on where I feel we really are but it was nice to get the win as next week is going to be a real trial with the Chief keen to bounce from that Brumbies game. I felt that the Lions were really poor, but that the Tahs were still playing really good footy and honestly should have run away with it on the board. Those kicks are a concern. Need to sort them out asap.

Yeh I think Newsome did ok at 13 - I think he has found his long term position as not effective on the wing.

Agree. Though again, how much easier is it for a 10 to look good when your forward pack is dominating. The double team tackles and desire to drive the opposition back isn't something we've seen alot of from the Tahs, it was great to watch and brings truth to my feelings that we're not seeing the best from this team consistently and attitude hasn't been right.
I loved seeing the confidence he (Harrison) had to really challenge the line. That nice break between two soft shoulders was great as was most of his general play. Fix some of the kicking and you could chalk that up as a very complete performance for a very young 10.
Also anyone doubting Hooper as a World Class flanker, really watch his game. Not just the highlight reel as I think some do when talking about other flankers but the whole game. All the little detail and work around the park is just top notch.
My concerns coming out of the game are the injuries. Simmons is a big loss as lock isn't exactly the Tahs strongest position. (I wonder if the Reds would do us a short term loan
). We really need Ned back.
Gordon isn't great either. Short is decent but he is still a step down from Gordon at this stage (at least for me). I guess it means McDonald to the bench next week.
A lot of the young boys are going to be getting some quality game time. The Chiefs I suspect will come out hard from the gates next week. Been a lot of chat about their slow starts.

Tahs still have an issue with their maul defense. While other areas showed good improvement, they were really at 6s and 7s trying to stop the maul.

Hooper really is incredible. Last pass for the first two tries, including one cutout and a beauty of an offload. Made it all the way across to the other wing and made the tackle and turnover which sparked another try and then was critical part of the lineout move and set up the final quick ruck for the last try.

Last night, for the first time since 2014, Hawko, Braveheart, Pfitzy and Lindommer were all in the same spot at the same time, a sweet smell of knowledge and success wafted on to the field from this lot. Is it an omen? A Tahs supporter can only dream.
Seriously, Pfitzy looked bloody good following his recent bout with a local cardiologist; the old charm, smile, wit and style were all there, together with a new, slim, svelte shape due to being off his oats after going under the knife. Keep getting better, NIck.

True, that. Kurtley kicks well when he's doing it week in, week out. He doesn't do back-up kicking well. Harrison ain't a reliable kicker either. Some real thought needs to go into kicker selection next week and thereafter. Maddocks should be taking all the line kicking, he's got 20+ metres on everyone else. Can he kick for goals too?
Jeez Hawko I get that but he had a shot right in front from 30 out and it wouldn't have gone through a second set of posts.
Harrison's place kicking wasn't horribe, I thought. Didn't have any easy shots and from memory was about 50%. I'd stick with him.

Stuff Jonny, I want to know what Hayden Parker's routine was. Didn't he get up to 40 straight successful kicks or something for the Sunwolves before he missed one and then went on to kick like another 30 or so?
It's his routine you want.
Edit: Just looked it up. He was like ~95% success in Super Rugby.

Wilkinson was 86.24% success.
Even people like Sexton and Biggar have had more success than Wilkinson being around 88% success.
