Super Rugby Pre-Season Trial: Waratahs v Reds

melbourne let him go for a reason - just wondering if they knew something

Clearly RA paid too much for a player who has been out injured for way too much of his time in rugby.

The offer from RA/Reds was never going to be competed with by the Storm. There just isn't that price tag paid to wingers in the NRL. They didn't let him go. He was off contract when RA signed him.

Wallabies outsiders Suliasi Vunivalu, Tate McDermott and James O’Connor will audition in front of new coach Eddie Jones in Queensland’s trial match against the Waratahs on Saturday night.
McDermott is tipped to start at halfback for the Reds and Vunivalu and O’Connor are expected to be named on the bench,

And not sure I'd describe McDermott as a "Wallabies outsider"

Or O'Connor for that matter.....

I would. Tate was picked behind Gordon more often that not. JOC (James O'Connor) has basically been deemed never be picked again by many here and seemingly Rennie.

As for the stakes of trials. Really? In a RWC year with a. New coach? Everyone battling for positions and form? Absolutely high stakes.

I agree with the shuffling of the coach, I reckon every wallaby jersey is up for review.

Many incumbents will retain but they are on notice to perform. I am sure there will be a few "bolters" getting on a plane to France later this year.

what an awesome weekend of rugby. The Men's game will be a ripper. Big times for the women with their biggest year ever (outside of a RWC) and needing to impress Eddie (QLD undergoing somewhat of a generational change too) and then the 7s with Caslick and a handful of other Aussie players

Based on the players available this is what I'd have as the strongest side for the Reds:

1. Ravai
2. Faessler
3. Nonggorr
4. Uru
5. Smith
6. Wright
7. McReight
8. Wilson
9. McDermott
10. Creighton
11. Daugunu
12. Henry
13. Paisami
14. Vunivalu
15. Petaia

Real toss of the coin between Henry/Paisami or Paisami/Flook, but I think they're leaning towards Henry so I went with that. Didn't realise Campbell wasn't listed until I went to name a side, haven't heard he's injured so hopefully they're just holding him back for the regular season.

I'd call that vertical injury concerns....any coverage going around anywhere?
Riori out too does reduce the cover, but it's all short term so I'm not sure what the rules are about bringing anyone in at the moment. I imagine they'd use Faifua before finding another though. They may look to start him in this trial ahead of Smith/Uru to see how ready he is.
