I agree it is unlikely although it would make more interesting rugby games and pit teams against those of the same level. Also whatever expansion method is undertaken it is going to be good regardless as its more rugby to watch. However the 5 conference system you proposed could make the season very long and the public interest would no doubt fall after the initial hype over the new season.

Not really. Two internal rounds equals 14 games (with the break for tests) meaning for the the bottom 4 or 6 teams its an 18 weeks season. No longer than the NRL or AFL.

A lot of good solid grassroots work going on in the US, beginning to garner more media exposure as well. If it rates well on NBC it wouldn't be too surprising if it begins to get more air time. Possible new bidder come next TV deal.

Two competitions with no serious international calendar to worry about... and there are still issues of player burnout constantly raised (in the NRL anyway)

If you include the 4 week gap for test its only an 18 week regular season. If you have the Top 2 from each conference that would bring it to 22. Have a break between the final and Tri- Nations. Could even alternate the June and Sept windows. That way one year the North comes South and next we go there.

Or better still, the IRB could work out a global season.

This present system for Super rugby is expanding with a new South African franchise joining soon. Then we have Argentina scheduled to play in the Tri-nations which can only be good for them and the game overall. Further expansion probably will happen but wat needs to be considered is the distance, travelling times, playing schedules, costs and commercial viability! Keep watching this space!
