Super Rugby Au Round 7 - Reds v Rebels @ Suncorp Stadium, 7:15pm Sat 15 Aug

Rebels really needed to score at the end of the half to be in it. Reds looking more clinical and disciplined (feels odd writing that). Halfway through that half I was about to write Daugunu is playing himself out of the Wallabies squad but he came home strong.

Deegan and To'omua are such a fun pairing to watch, they really work well together. If a few of the passes stick they could get going.

Naisarani v Wilson is looking pretty even so far.

Reckon on today's efforts it is Koroibete who put some question marks on his spot in the Wallabies.

McReight does what McReight does. Thought the Reds were lucky not to give away a penalty in the shenigans in the rucks on line but play on.

Tupou should have been YCed for pulling down the Rebels maul less than a metre from the line.

Are there really no slightly mediocre referees in this country? All four have been poor; today's effort one of the poorest.

well i think To'omua hasnt shown enough to be the wobs 10, JOC (James O'Connor) has had his number tonight

Not hard when MT wasn't playing 10. OTOH, Matty had JOC (James O'Connor)'s number in the 12 spot, hands down.

Actually, JOC (James O'Connor) still isn't much chop at 10. Plays way too deep, and kicks too often. He looks best when he is running the ball back from the fullback position.

All the Pone hype men are probably starting the pipe down. He’s had a few loose carries tonight and being held in the scrum by a Reds rookie.

Just for balance PC, Tupou was held in the scrum by Orr too, and he isn't far off being a rookie. Excellent battle in the scrums tonight.

Tend to agree. I actually found that an odd game as a whole. The defence from the Reds will be the talking point but I really felt the Rebels were poor with their decision making. Some of the white line fever and inability of Lomani or Deegan to find the space in the line left me a little underwhelmed at times. To'omua was a huge loss.

The kicking by both teams was really uninspiring at many points.

Murphy had an odd game too. Felt he missed quite a bit, let a lot slide and made some calls that seemed just plain wrong. That offside line seemed to creep forward a lot / have a few kinks at times and I'm sure I spotted a number of knockons that were never called not to mention the breakdown becoming a bit of a mess with entry, bodies flopping over, diving in and some rather suspect turnovers. Was actually a little comical at times, like watching 3rd grade play.

That said, that is the kind of game Thorn would have loved. All about grit. You've got to give it to the Reds, they hung strong and you could see their joy in Petaia scoring which was nice to see. That Stewart try was a nice little play too with Tate playing his part just right before the release to JOC (James O'Connor) and Stewart having just the right line to carve past a number of Rebel defenders. McKay would have been happy.

Anyway, well done Reds. A well deserved victory.

Agree entirely with your comments on Murphy. Refereeing in this comp has been poor, way below the standard of play.

Stewart was Johnny on the spot to take advantage of an extremely poor defensive decision by Magnay, who came in on JOC (James O'Connor) (?) when he should have stayed on his man, Stewart. Magnay's poor effort was the main, if not sole, reason for the line break and try.

That game had everything..........

Too much kicking, great defence from the Reds, terrible refereeing, Koroibete costing his team a try because he forgot how to pass, Petaia taking a dive, the Rebels showing that scoring driving maul tries isn't easy, and two behemoth TH's going at it.........

If you're referring to the incident where Petaia goes down after kicking ahead, then in my unbiassed opinion, Petaia should have been penalised for a Hollywood.
Kellaway was beaten by Petaia, had a swinging arm that was high. Who cares if Petaia could have stayed up. Why does that change any of the earlier things? If Kellaway hadn't checked Petaia or impeded him, what could have happened after the fact?

Man, I don't see why you downplay positive attacking rugby like this, you've really ignored or missed a large number of factors which make this a well worked try.

Firstly the scrum wheeled up on the Reds LH side which removed Michael Wells from breaking off the side of the scrum at speed, whether the Reds front row intentionally wheeled it we will never know.

Secondly it was Tate's run from the back of the scrum which made Tuttle slow to push out and cover JOC (James O'Connor), Tuttle should have been marked by Wells, however since Wells was removed from the equation, and because Tate ran the ball rather then passing off the base this created a fraction of indecision for Tuttle about pushing out.

Thirdly, removing Michael Wells by wheeling the scrum and the indecision by Tuttle about pushing out now meant the Reds had a 4 v 2 overlap, this overlap is what caused the break by Stewart.

TLDR: it was a well worked try created by the scrum and Tuttles play off the back of the scrum.

After leaking 45 points last week the reds defence for this game would have been most pleasing for thorn.

The rebels need to be able to find better ways to unlock defences though.

It surely looked a bit that way at the game BR, though I may of been harsh on Petaia, it did look a little overdone.

And to add confirmation that we need to do something about the standard of our play here. It was a struggle to find a hell of a lot of positives out of game, obviously as Reds supporter I was stoked with win, pleased with Reds defence, but struggled to rate it much above a good premier club game. Was there chatting with a couple of long time Reds men, one who has been a member of Queensland and then Reds supporter's club for about 30 odd years other who has about 2 years to go on 25 year membership, so rusted on rugby men that have followed the Reds and Qld rugby for a long time. So I value their opinions, and both were disappointed with standard of the game, and general standard of whole comp at moment. I actually wonder if there are too many players earning a living playing the game here at moment, and many are semi professional level at best. reds have Tupou, Wilson, McReight, Salakaia-Loto and Wright in forwards, and McDermott, JOC (James O'Connor), Stewart and Petaia, that looked to be worthy of being paid to play game, it amazes me how excited I have heard people get over Dangahau etc who can run, but has to stop to catch a ball it seems, seems to struggle to catch it at full pace.
Rebels I thought were poor, they got To'omua, who is lynchpin in backline, other reasonable players like Reece Hodge (who last night was woeful at time) Kellaway, naisarani (who needs to learn to work more) and on last night, not much else to excite anyone. I know I am being harsh, but at game the biggest worry, they were losing the crowd, you could hear people talking about other things than the game, and on the bus on the way home, didn't hear anyone discussing the game. That should ring alarm bells, it did to me , but I a rugby tragic and seeing people going off our game infuriates me.

You should just put ‘I think NZRU were right to want less Australian teams’ as your tag line and you won’t have to make all these long-winded posts bagging the quality.

You are spot on.
I left the game happy knowing we are still in contention for the finals but was dissatisfied with the quality of rugby. The media goes on about our great defence on the line but why were we on our 22 for a solid 20 mins. The Reds need an attacking game plan, and to learn how to play quality ball to full pace runners into gaps. There were plenty of gaps. Our runners were stop and start losing momentum and power in their attack and missing opportunities. JOC (James O'Connor) was playing too deep for too long. Our backline was disjointed and couldn’t support our forward runners. Too many kicks in the first half made it a very boring game.
IMO we were lucky that the Rebels played a lazy game last night.
I’ll take the win but don’t think that game plan will work next week.
