Our box kicks never seem to be chased down by a winger - MK excluded.

Daugunu is generally pretty good in that department.

And after making an absolute shocker of a tackle in that pre-season trial in Gladstone he seems to have learnt his lesson and is very good with his timing.

See - it’s interesting MST - I completely disagree on the kicking thing and I would argue the Kiwi sides all kick more than we do. But our kicking is too often poorly executed and/or all just kicking for distance. From my perspective good attacking teams have a well structured kicking game with variety AND an excellent kick chase - two things which I think we can improve on.

Thats a good point and you are correct about the Kiwis kicking more.

I was thinking from an Aussie prospective; that we do it poorly so certainly don't need to do more kicking (or different types).

So, in the end I have just put myself through the pain of watching the last 5 minutes again. At the end of the day, the Reds just failed with some of the detail that would have got them home.

In the last 5 minutes -
- Stewart gave away a lazy penalty lying in the break down off the kick off
- We threw to the front of the lineout off the penalty where the Brumbies were clearly marking heavily. There were free targets at the back but I’m assuming we didn’t have the confidence to throw longer. 30 second left I would have thrown to the middle - worst case you then have a crack at their scrum
- Daugunu handed the ball back when he ran himself into trouble after inexplainably standing there for 2-3 seconds on the kick return off Mack Hansen’s kick when there was only 15 seconds left

Really impressed by the Reds devevlopment, but these are the sort of detail that will get us home in these types of games

Personally I think the refereeing in the AU comp has been pretty poor which results in things like this. The TMO's have been absent, so much missed or just ignored, and then you have scenarios like last night where have 9 penalties in a short period of the game, 8 are against the Reds the worst they get is warning. Invariably it will impact games.

Would it be wrong to suggest the Kiwi law variations have turned their game into semi opposed touch football games?

What law variations Sully? They are only officiating the breakdown and offside as they always should have imho. Entry through the gate, placing/releasing the ball immediately once tackled, no double movement roll/wriggle rubbish once tackled, contestants in ruck staying on feet rather than flopping all over it/sealing off.. I'm not sure I see anything that is a 'new' variation rather just a more stringent focus to clean up some of the sloppiness and on the ground shenanigans.



I think there is still some fine-tuning on how quickly refs award turnovers and what constitutes really on the ball/supporting weight, the amount of time the refs allow for the breakdown to play-out, but overall I like the focus to force much more acuracy at the breakdown has been overdue.


Overall I think it strikes a better balance of rewarding skill and accuracy over power which I think is to the betterment of the game.


I'm keen to see the ball in play stats for SRA once done vs. SuperRugby historically.

Had to double down on this. Zander is still listed as 20yo. To be making the jump to Super and propping a leading scrum is incredible. At 190cm I would have also thought a difficult ask.

If this is a result of Lillycrap then what a star in the Reds coaching team.

He's improved dramatically since he's joined the senior team. Lost a bunch of weight and greatly improved his technique. Hopefully he continues this trajectory.

Pretty sure Dane hasnt been anywhere near a rep squad at youth level either. Besides playing for Norths, he wasnt even in the Reds Academy before this year as far as I know. Performances at Prem Grade earned him a chance in the NRC.

Just re-watched. Our line out was fine with BPA on the field.

Incredible work from Zander and Tupou - full game not letting up at any point.

I haven't got any problem at all with Brumbies maul tactics - chasing points using a strength. I think it adds to the game.

Still shaking my head at the recalled try after half time.

I haven't agreed with the thinking until this game - but I now think JOC (James O'Connor) has the run for the WB 10 jumper.

A lot of questions aimed at the Reds discipline, but wow, some of those penalties and advantage plays might be technically correct but you wouldn't change anything.

And everyone with sour grapes on the Brumbies - have some grace. For a fan to see a game won in extra time is simply exciting. They were tested big time but they do have the winning habit.

Yeah I’ve got no problem with how the Brumbies played. They still tried to attack plenty but the Reds defence was up to it. Like some others my only issue was the recalled Petaia try. Otherwise it was a cracking match - hopefully we can even the ledger in the return match!

Gotta say on criticism of BK at 10 - I thought in first half he was good with attacking the line, his defence and distribution. Did feel he was under playing his hand but understandable. I think he is pretty exciting prospect after these last two games. Likewise reds 9 who started at 9 ahead of Tate I thought was also good.

I've been thinking more and more about the rolling maul tactics of the Brumbies. I personally think the RM is a blight on the game, but you know what, fuck it let's get Lord Laurie and Dan McKellar involved with the Wallabies so they can perfect it too. It will give everybody else the shits and we'll score from it. It's still within the laws of the sport so fair game for mine. Few things would give me greater pleasure than people bemoaning the Wallabies winning playing "boring" forward oriented footy, mainly because nobody thinks we can.

the rolling maul is a blight on the game... however it is legal and you would be a fool not to play to your strengths.
So whilst I hate seeing it, I don't question the logic behind using it from the coaches or players.
