Super Rugby AU Grand Final - Reds v Brumbies - Saturday 8th May 2021

Great ending to a fantastic season.

Just to appease some dickheads here, I will point out a couple of very poor but important errors from our impeccable Referee. A turnover by Lonergan in the first half was penalised. Swain was yellow carded for a completely legitimate tackle on the ball carrier in a maul. In the second last series of phases, at a ruck under the crossbar, McReight was part of the ruck and did not unbind before digging in for the ball. That should have ended the game with both teams on equal points for and against each other over the three games.

Best part about it all was that the Reds finished as minor premiers and hosted the final in front of over 40,000 fans. Rugby is back.

After this season, there should be no question at all that SRAu needs to continue and that the TT component just comes in as an added extra.

EDIT : One last comment. Tupou was the difference in this and previous games. The Reds backline didn't fire a shot in the whole game and other than scrum time, the Brumbies had the better in the forwards. Imagine Tupou playing in that Brumbies side. They would be damn near unbeatable.

Haha! I might choose a different last comment, but FWIW agree generally with what you are saying here. Give Sio some kudos, Tupou hardly had it one way in the scrum.

At the same time that Valetini was yellowed (could have been red) Fainga'a could easily have gone for no arms missile tackle to the legs.

Tom Wright should have at least got yellow for a very nasty neck roll in the first half.

Nic White could easily have been penalised, if not carded for sliding in knees first to Jordan Petaia.

Sio set up crooked all game and the one time the Brumbies got a scrum penalty they basically did so for being fucking shit and getting monstered.

No ref has ever been impeccable. He made errors both ways. Both teams had chances to win.

Many observers will only consider Thors work in the scrum, his effort to get back and retrieve the ball earlier in the game (before giving away a cynical penalty to stop the brumbies) will be overlooked, not many props put that much effort into running backwards.

This was another example of winning ugly, average teams cannot do this and I think the Reds still have room for improvement

It would have been the best way to end.

Still can’t understand WTF they were thinking taking the lineout though.

All I can think is Zander said something. He’s propping against one of the Wallabies best players of this generation. I was screaming for scrum after scrum but the fact it wasn’t even discussed makes me think they ruled it out.

Congrats Reds.... deserving champions this year.

The Brumbies have got to get back to closing out those games better.

Brumbies v Reds rivalry has reinvigorated Australian rugby, it’s been great for the game, obviously happy the reds won but impressed with how the Brumbies have played all season

Reds short turn around to front up against the 'Landers in Dunedin in 6 days. The boys will still be hungover. Probably won't have Petaia, Paisami or Wilson. Will definitely be testing the depth!

Well thoroughly enjoyed that, was exciting at the end especially, which is even better , because crowd leaves the park on a high.
I was on Reds last night obviously, was a little concerned about lack lf attack in backline , but maybe that was because I wasn't giving Brumbies defence the credit it deserved.
Had a few messages from mates leaving the ground last night, and all seemed pretty content, though I believe the Reds may get a bill from a heart sepcialist form a couple;).

Just a question are the Brumbies a bit of the pace fitness wise, they been run down 3 times by Reds and looked to be struggling with 20 to go last night.
All in all very good, and guess we move onto TT for a few weeks.

FF (Folau Fainga'a) nd Tom Wright were fortunate to not have a more severe sanction, agreed.

Don't agree with the other observations.

Geez so much winge.

Good work Reds. Brumbies played great but the loss of Muirhead stuffed their attack a bit.

Blows my mind why the Reds didn’t just go for scrum after scrum at the death, but I guess AAA is wallaby prop and Zander is club rugby standard sometimes. Didn’t want to leave it up to a weirdly reffed scrum call. Or TT to get pinged for boaring in (when really he’s just mincing them).

I was there screaming for the scrum, but this makes a lot of sense now the emotions have died down.

Which part of ‘you can’t slide into a player knees first’ don’t you agree with?

And I thought you were passionate about props staying square? Or does that only apply to certain prop(s).

Just re-watching the game.

I know it is actually pretty common place, but still great to see Simone was straight over the help steady Wilson when he was obviously out in his feet.

Noticed that at the time, too. Great to see.

The funny thing is was out with mates at craft brew festival and was watching closing minutes of the game on my mobile with them at 80minutes with Reds attacking the line and down 16 - 12 and then my battery died! so only just watched close out of the game.

Found it ironic with all the noted problems of line out throws for oz hookers that brumbies with own lineout throw in 78th minute where could have closed out the game if won the lineout and retained possession but lineout ball not controlled by Brumbies and McReight gets possession and then get first penatly advantage that leads to continued reds retained possession and the rest is history.

Anyhow how much have reds-brumbies games set up State of Origin type battles with all 3 matches this season only decided in dying stages and in all cases where Brumbies have led. Will say lot of credit to this match goes to the Brumbies who have for many years been the only decent oz super rugby side who have played continuously at this standard that now got another good super rugby side with the Reds making it a real contest.

With these two top quality sides and others improving we definitely need our own domestic comp alongside the TT. Was thinking a six nations one round style with no finals to accomodate but nope definitely need at least a final (one vs two) as to see packed out stadium with 42k games with this great contest was gold for selling our game and getting the fans back.
