Just do away with the conferences and have each team play each other once. At least we will have a top 8 determined by merit. Then the burden of travel can be a genuine case of 'stiff shit'.

^^^^^ indeed it is. Doing more research later & will post if I find any more examples.

Luckily someone from the Hurled did it for me:

Super Rugby teams travelling across Indian Ocean following a playoff win:
1999
Final:
Highlanders lost to Crusaders in Dunedin after winning semifinal in Cape Town

2001
Final:
Sharks lost to Brumbies after winning semifinal in Durban

2009
Final:
Chiefs lost to Bulls after winning semifinal in Hamilton

2011
Semifinal:
Crusaders beat the Stormers after winning qualifier in Nelson

Final:
Crusaders lost to Reds after winning semifinal in Cape Town

2012
Semifinal:
Sharks beat to Stormers in Cape Town after winning qualifier in Brisbane
Final:
Sharks lost to Chiefs in Hamilton after winning semifinal in Cape Town

2013
Semifinal:
Brumbies beat the Bulls after winning qualifier in Canberra.

Final:
Brumbies lost to Chiefs after winning semifinal in Pretoria

2014
Semifinals:
Sharks lost to Crusaders after winning quarter-final in Durban

2015
Semifinals:
Brumbies lost to Hurricanes after winning quarter-final in Cape Town

2016
Semifinals:
Chiefs lost to Hurricanes after winning quarter-final in Cape Town
Highlanders lost to Lions after winning quarter-final in Canberra
Final:
Lions lost to Hurricanes after winning semifinal in Johannesburg

So that appears to be three teams winning in SA the week after winning in Australasia & zero vice versa. Doesn't auger well for the Tribe this week, or the 'canes if they make it to next week.

Fairly damning. The highlanders were the one side who had a chance to upset the apple cart last week.

Does anyone think a 2 week break between the pre lims and the finals would be a good idea to level out the playing field?

^^^^^^^^^ it would but the problem is finding even an extra week with the calendar so congested. The almost-Global Season will help but that's still a coupla years away & even then I'm not sure the various players associations will be keen on letting what's effectively an extra bye round or two eat into their 10- or 12-week "off-season".

All finals played in Perth to equalise travel requirements (assumes no Aussie teams make it)

It is, but at least Veldsman will be nowhere to be heard.........

Christchurch to Jo'burg 11,453km, Christchurch to Perth 5,051 therefore Sethfrickens would moan about having to travel the extra 337.75km & demand it be played on the USS Gerald R Ford* :) Seriously though, if Super Rugby somehow survives beyond 2020 (& I'm starting to doubt that it can) they've got to address the issue somehow.

*I'm pretty sure he's the most recent dead President without an aircraft carrier named after him, but Gerald Ford?

You're normally see accurate WOB, but there is in fact a USS Gerald Ford, launched in 2017. In fact, it's apparently the most advanced aircraft carrier in the world. :)

EDIT: Don't think I'd like to be either of those blokes standing at the front.

I assume that this may mean a Lions v Crusaders final in J'burg?

Lions finished on 65 pts, Crusaders on 63.

Lions about to play their first Kiwi team of the 2017 season. Is there a more damning indictment of super rugby?

There is limited direct flights to Perth anyway.

So that may not solve anything.

It's fine if you're in Jo Burg, and can get on the flight that night, but if you're somewhere else in SA, you have to get to Jo Burg, or go via Dubai.

I think the obvious answer to this is the removal of South Africa.

They can get to London quicker than they can get here, and we can get to LA quicker than we get there.

Super Rugby focuses it's growth to the north and east of here.

Imagine the mess there would have been had Argentina made the finals?

.........like a competition based upon a combination of a lucky dip and Lotto.

Indeed, can we ever forget the 36 hours it took the Wallabies to get from Cape Town to Argentina?

With a bit of creative accounting thrown in. We may be about to see the final farcical result of the 2 SA conference system with 2 x guaranteed quarter finals in SA. How NZ and Aus ever agreed to this is a complete mystery. (Although having Pulver as the Australian negotiator explains part of it)

Pulver's PR people keep feeding into our supine, intellectually docile rugby journos that 'Pulver's done a wonderful job at improving the ARU's international relationships after the fractious JO'N years that broke bonds.' And, true to form, they repeat it like a mantra.

This may be true - the only little factual problem being that the yield from that Kissinger-esque diplomatic ingenuity seems to be competitive arrangements of breathtaking stupidity and likely medium-term commercial suicide the crowning example of which is the lybarinthan debacle that is the Super18, a madness of schedule and structure that will be remembered for years to come as the perfect example of how not to organise an international sporting competition if the objectives are fan engagement, growth in viewership and general financial viability.

SA wasn't guaranteed 2 QFs as Jaguares are in one of their pools and could of got one of the spots. Geez with Aus getting a home QF I think you should fall to your knees and thank whoever negotiated for Aus!!
