Super AU R2 - Reds v Rebels Suncorp Stadium 26/2

Good to see another former Melbourne Rising player Stacey Ili playing for Rebels (even though he played with the Rising in 2015).

And another Victorian in Isaac Aedo Kailea.

Rebels 1-15: Cabous Eloff, Jordan Uelese, Pone Faamausili, Steve Cummins, Trevor Hosea, Brad Wilkin, Richard Hardwick, Michael Wells, Joe Powell, Matt To'omua (c), Marika Koroibete, Reece Hodge, Stacey Ili, Lachlan Anderson, Tom Pincus

Reserves: Ed Craig, Isaac Aedo Kailea, Rhys van Nek, Rob Leota, Josh Kemeny, James Tuttle, Glen Vaihu, Frank Lomani
Ouch I knew the team had been hit hard with some disruptions (injuries, etc.) but not to this level. On the positive is another Melbourne guy is going to get a Super Rugby debut (Kailea) and also van Nek and Vaihu get exposed to Super Rugby

Starting team still fairly solid, just the bench is a massive worry. Also no locks on the bench

Yikes that rebels team does not fill me with confidence. Interesting To'omua got the nudge at 10. Need Isi & DHP back soon.

Predicting Van Nek to be the starting prop by end of season.

No Carter Gordon surprises me. Looking forward to watching Van Nek and Vaihu.

Kind of reminds me of some of the scratch teams we put out when TT was breaking all the players

Hopefully the boys tough it out till the bitter end but..... Reds by plenty :(

Yeah, why are they playing Tuttle and Lomani? Surely if you pinch Carter Gordon from the Reds you plan to play him?! Didn't Tuttle play a bit of flyhalf at school?

As normal this Rebels squad just feels like a fantasy team and has been sorted by 'best overall' and just taken the best available in each position, then the next best 20 odd players available.
Then Dave Rennie has turned up and gone 'what am I supposed to do with this?'.

The forwards are pretty good. And the backs look good until you get to 13, then it's all down hill. But who plays 10 if To'omua goes down, who plays lock if.. no no that's it, who plays lock other than Trevor Hosea? Where is Ross Haylett-Petty, why are they bringing in a 28 year old journey man instead of developing their own players.

There are a number of good and fair criticisms to be made about the Rebels side, both for "tomorrow night" and in a broader sense.

I think bemoaning that a 27 year old Lock/Blindside has failed to secure a starting spot over a 28 year old Lock, both of whom have had a far from good history with injuries, nor have ever really looked capable of regularly playing at International level, is not necessarily a good one.

The bench is very a consequence of player availability. Some of the players you expect to be in the side will be there in the coming weeks, some players have just recovered from long term injuries, the Argentine’s have been given another week (only been with the squad for a matter of weeks), Hanson just got out of quarantine and some small injuries to wider squad members. Given the fly in on the day situation, some players they have thought it’d be better to wait another week or so to get it right. More likely to see a better squad next week

So is the Rebel's selection attitude that they're not going to win against the Reds, so save their gunpowder against other sides where they have a better chance of winning?

This SpiderCam is pretty cool, it has its own inbuilt microphone and speaker and they’re using it to interview players on the field during warmup.

Cant wait to see the Reds roll out again, pretty excited by the quality in the team.
