Subbies 2023!

Very Confident of winning another Subbies Sevens tournament this weekend. Be interested to see who UNSW bring along with them and who Kings bring along.

Because its an old boys network and the "elite' clubs get preference, some times to their detriment. i.e Knox stayed 3 years too long due to "special consideration" and will most likely end up rebuilding in Div 4 for a few years.
Agree HeavyD - the board have no one to blame but themselves. Their stomachs are full from the Drummoyne piss they drink out of the trough.

Does anyone know the potential timeline for the schedule proper is going to be released and when Subbies are going to update the websites for what clubs are going to be in what grade?

Answering your original question: ideally a Division 1 draw would be out before January, and Division 2 early in the new year at the latest, followed as closely as possible by Division 3 etc.

However, nothing since the end of 2019 has been ideal.

As a result of competitions starting late (2020), getting cut off (2021), and then having weird divisional structures (2022), the landscape is more rocks than diamonds. This was on top of an already shrinking player and volunteer base, and dwindling interest in rugby. Throw in borders re-opening to players desperate for an overseas holiday, and clubs are left with more questions than answers, some days.

The goal of 2023 is to set up a competition that stabilises now and into future years. It is taking time to get right.

It should be noted that draws for Divisions 4-6 over the last few years are rarely ready until a few weeks out from the competition as clubs finalise their numbers.

For the sake of a different idea, why not experiment with something different for divisions 3 down.
Fix division 2 by making either Beecroft or Harlequins go up. For the sake of this scenario, let's say Beecroft.
Division 1: Blue Mountains, Colleagues, Drummoyne, Forest, Hunters Hill, Mosman, Petersham, St Pats, Waverley.
Division 2: Beecroft, Briars, Hawkesbury Valley, Hills, Lindfield, Newport, UNSW.
At the end of 2023, the last placed club in Division 1 is relegated. No questions asked. If the top placed club in Division 2 wishes to move into Division 1, they have a one round playoff against the 8th placed club. Based on club champ points, winner is in Division 1.

Then from Division 3 down, you grade clubs, based on number of grade and competition.
Div 3 1st Grade (Clark)Div 4 1st Grade (McLean)Div 5 1st Grade (Jeffery)Div 6 1st Grade (Meldrum)Div 3 2nd Grade (Farrant)Div 4 2nd Grade (Grose)Div 3 3rd Grade (Campbell)Radford
Old BarkerYYY
Old IggiesYYY
HarlequinsYYYY
EppingYYYY
SaversYY
KnoxYYY
RedfieldYY
HarbourYY
CanterburyY
ChatswoodYY
HACY
Mac UniYYY
MerrylandsYY
Northern SaintsYYY
RaptorsY
DukesY
BalmainYY
MenaiY
IrishY
North CronullaY
BurraneerY
WakehurstY
BrothersY
Kings OBY
OatleyY
Lane CoveY

In this system, you have all 8 team competitions.
DIVISION 3: Old Barker & Lane Cove; Old Iggies & HAC; Sydney Harlequins; Epping; Manly Savers & Balmain; Knox & Kings OB; Redfield & Northern Saints; Harbour & Dukes.
DIVISION 4: Chatswood; Mac Uni; Burraneer & Wakehurst; North Cronulla & Oatley ; Irish & Brothers; Menai & Canterbury; Raptors & North Saints; Merrylands

Clubs listed together would need to work together to share grounds. For example, Barker have 3 grade and Lane Cove have 1 - Barker would have 5 home games and Lane Cove 2 games. All of that fixture would be played there.

Similar to how the rural/regional Unions are set up. You field the number of grades you can at the level you can. As long as they're in consecutive grades (i.e. can't field 1s & 3s).

Maybe, but the system needs a reboot. Maybe this is the way. I don’t know.
It’s a suggestion. It would take the clubs thinking about more than themselves and look beyond their own needs

It has merit IMHO - while the current system works for clubs above a certain level of resourcing, there are demographic factors that are eroding others e.g. your own catchment suburbs around Epping have had massive change that clubs clustered in the east don't experience.

A review of the relationship between Juniors, Schools, and Seniors is also long overdue in the Sydney basin. For the good of the game, something needs to change in order to retain people in the code.

Are you saying having 20 different unions in NSW working only for themselves isnt a good way to run things?

Radical thinking, I know.

Being in close proximity to an NRL club is eye opening. Watching how their rep footy is organised, and realising just how badly we do it in terms of relying on schools as development systems...
