Subbies 2023!

Pfitzy

Nathan Sharpe (72)
The New Year is here, and this is the thread for all things NSWSRU in 2023.

Unleash the dogs of war... or at least, unfettered imagination when it comes to rumours!

Beat thing to happen this year!
Looking forward to seeing the division structures and hopefully some draws out early in the new year. Would be great to have an idea on where everyone stands.
Good luck everyone in 2023!

Hearing that Subbies are looking at odd numbers in top three grades. Not the worst option if it evens out the comps

Surely clubs would be against a 6 team division? Playing everyone 3 times? I thought that caused the division’s to be combined last year?
9 team Div 1 would mean 18 rounds. Hopefully those bottom place teams can hang in there, otherwise it’s a long season.

I am sure it can change. From what I understand Drummoyne and Petersham both had to justify staying up, to which they both did.

The sensible decision would be to just make the call and move one down. I don't even think there is enough weeks to run 18 rounds in the small timeframe we have next year as the competition must end by end of august.

Absolute piss take if that's the div 2 setup.

I like both Drummoyne and Petersham staying up in Div 1. Strong clubs and good for Kentwell to not lose one of these teams
9 teams though could be tough for the teams that lose momentum with a Wet Weather Week into a Bye week into playing a team that has given up for the season like what happened last year.
Would Subbies put more focus on Halligans games so teams with similar 1st grade sides can be matched up in the Lower divs?

Larry Dwyer (12)
It’s a joke if Subbies allow a 9 team Div 1, all
of the other divisions will suffer. Subbies need to make a decision for the best of the whole competition and drop one side to Div 2.

Of course they all want to stay in the previous division but neither club has been able to meet the criteria of Div 1 and hasn’t fielded a 5th grade so they don’t have a leg to stand on.

It should be Div 1- 8 teams, Div 2- 7 teams, Div 3- 7 teams and Div 4- 8 Teams. That’s the fairest split for all clubs involved and not just Div 1.

Either way I hope Subbies make a decision soon so we can move onto actually playing and talking about some games.

Correct. Must be finished by RWC.

18 rounds as a concept hasn't been desirable for almost any club for years, and almost not a possibility with the way grounds are managed these days.

As for the divisional structures: per the Chairman's speech at the AGM, the balance needs to be struck between the right number of grades / clubs and a good level of competition in each division.

The Board is focused on ensuring we have an environment where clubs can aspire to grow, while at the same time not getting smashed in the division where they currently reside.

Any news on what Divisions might look like Mr.Pfitzy? Surely there is a better solution than a 9-team Div 1 and a 6-team Div 2....

"Better" is a fluid concept and often subjective :)

The Board - and clubs generally - would love to have 48 (or more) clubs evenly divided into 6 divisions with a game for everyone, every week.

We have spoken to multiple clubs in the last 3 months about their intentions and planning for 2023. Based on those communications, we're reasonably confident that whatever structure comes out of it will be the best option available.

In this we are considering not only 2023 but the entire competition structure ongoing.

Food for thought in achieving "better":
1) Need to be wary of clubs moving to (or staying in) Divisions beyond their capabilities, which can destroy that club.
AND
2) Similarly, a club landing in a Division where they are beyond the capabilities of everyone else has the potential to wreck multiple other clubs.

So beyond their capabilities would be confirming that Barker wont be in Div 2?

I know the board is doing there best to come up
With an even competition but if they leave the decision to late and announce it just before the start of the season, it’s going to cause it’s own dramas.
Not every club is going to be happy with where they end up or if we have a 9 team div 1 then the lower divisions will only have 5-7 teams which clubs May not be a fan of either.
It would be great if Subbies could put out a proposed plan for the season and then they can continue the discussion with clubs as to where they best fit.
We don’t want a repeat of a club pulling out of a division on the night before Rd 1 because they’ve finally realised that they don’t have the numbers to compete.

If you ask 40 Subbies clubs what the best structure is, you'll get about 25 different suggestions ;)

if they leave the decision to late and announce it just before the start of the season,

Typically we'd have a Division 1 draw by now but we've come out of a few atypical years.

Clubs in Div 1 should know where they sit after discussions with the Board.
Clubs in Divs 2 & 3 should also be fairly confident of their position, based on the Board (via the CCR) discussions in Q4 of last year.
Clubs in Divs 4+ will be seeking to lock down their numbers so they can inform Subbies of their intentions (affiliation forms went in with the best estimate back in November, but it's a fluid landscape).

Any club who is unclear on that position can call Subbies.

Any club members requiring clarity should seek it from their club Executive as a first point.

There won't be any last minute changes because the Board aren't just taking anyone's word for it at this point, and will be watching numbers as well as communicating closely with clubs.
