I think there's some value in that train of thought Paarl.
The Sharks Boks looked a bit flat - not mentally sharp.

To some degree this is understandable after an epic international season I guess.
But still frustrating for a Sharks fan.

Rumours have it that Boland who fall in the Stormers area, look like signing a few big names (including Harrison)for next year

Boland set to bolster Stormers

Cape Town – Ambitious Boland are set to bolster the Stormers’ depth dramatically for 2010 with deals in the pipeline for Argentine prop Eusebio Guinazu, All Black centre Pita Alatini and Wallaby lock Justin Harrison.

Boland president Francois Davids did not want to comment on Monday, but the agent negotiating Guinazu and Alatini’s contracts confirmed Sport24’s queries.

“There is an offer from Boland for Guinazu and the chances are good that he will accept,” said the agent, Jason Smith.

“I am also working on Alatini’s contract. He is coming to South Africa with his wife.”

There were reports during the Currie Cup that Alatini was seeking a move to the Cape. His wife, Megan, is believed to be the cousin of a committee member at a Cape rugby club.

However Western Province are apparently not that keen on 33-year-old Alatini. He is in the twilight of his career and last played Test rugby for New Zealand in 2001.

Subsequently he has played for Japanese sides Kamaishi Seawaves and Suntory Sungoliath.

Guinazu, 27, may be a prospect that excites Stormers coach Rassie Erasmus. He has played 15 Tests for Argentina and represented them at the World Cup in 2007.

His best position is tighthead prop, but he can also play hooker and loosehead.

The WP front row of Wicus Blaauw, Tiaan Liebenberg and Brock Harris performed with distinction in the Currie Cup, but depth is always an issue in the Super14.

Guinazu may be a valuable acquisition for the region in that regard.

“It’s Boland’s initiative. We have a good relationship with them and their signings will boost rugby in the Western Cape,” said WP Rugby (Pty) Ltd chairperson Pat Kuhn.

Boland are currently fighting for survival in the Premier League of the Currie Cup. However, Smith does not believe than plan to bring Guinazu and Alatini to Boland will necessarily hit the skids if the Cavaliers lose to the Pumas in Witbank on Friday.

A source close to Sport24 confirmed that Harrison is also on Boland’s shopping list.

At his best he was a fiery lock for Australia, but he has also made headlines for the wrong reasons.

He is currently serving a suspension for the use of cocaine.

This ban ends on January 13 next year and he will therefore be available for the start of the Super 14 if the Cavaliers sign him.

It’s an open question whether the Stormers will need the services of a 35-year-old Harrison.

Anton van Zyl and Andries Bekker are bound to be Erasmus’s first-choice lock pairing, while young players such as George Earle, De Kock Steenkamp and Martin Muller are progressing through the ranks.

Adriaan Fondse is still recovering from a serious knee injury and rumours have it that he may miss the early matches of the Super 14.

Nevertheless, he will be a controversial signing.

Apart from the drugs issue, he was involved in a race row in 2005 while playing for the Waratahs against the Cats in Johannesburg. It was for a racial slur directed at Chumani Booi. Booi and his erstwhile team-mate Conrad Jantjes objected and suspected Wallaby centre Nathan Grey.

However, Harrison admitted to the slur and apologised. While Booi accepted his apology, Harrison was suspended for three matches.

At his best Harrison certainly was a fine player. He is remembered for his brilliant performance for the Wallabies in their third Test against the British and Irish Lions in 2001.

English wing Austin Healey insulted him in a newspaper column before the game. Harrison went on to win a crucial lineout turnover in the dying stages to help secure the series for the Wallabies.

Harrison a big name? :lmao: I can think of many players with more than eight letters in their surnames.

It will be interesting to see if any of those make the Stomer's squad - that Argies prop might be an interesting prospect. Especially as the Stormers have struggled in the tight 5 area in recent memory.

Regarding Harrison, he's over the hill. At S14 level he might offer some experience off the bench, but I'd suspect he isn't the type you'd want for an experienced older team man to help the younger ones. I mean, he "retired" after getting caught snorting coke in a strip bar and getting into a fight with another football team.

OK so the Stormers end up with Habana, Jac Fourie, du Jongh & Schalk in the Bok squad. There could have been more players but this do have some positive spin offs for them. Meaning they can start a few weeks earlier preparing for the S14. They'll link up in a week or two and start get that conditoining ready while the Boks will only start in January.

Saw the locals is pretty proud on Tamooua getting the nod for the Wallaby sqaud.

Habana on his new province

New WP 'respect': Habana

Cape Town -- Bryan Habana officially signed up on two-year terms with Western Province on Friday, in a move hailed by Province CEO Rob Wagner as “invaluably assisting us in our drive for trophies”.

At a media opportunity at Newlands, Wagner said they were “elated and privileged” to have the popular former Bulls flier join the fold.

“We have acquired a massive asset, both on the field and off it.”

Director of coaching Rassie Erasmus, meanwhile, said: “Six months ago if you’d given me one choice of a player to sign I’d have named Bryan Habana.

“I’m ecstatic he’s signed our contract. I’ve played against him and coached against him and he just has that X-factor.

“The team will benefit enormously from his presence.”

The Springbok wing gave short, separate interviews - supervised by his father and manager Bernie - to selected journalists, including Sport24 chief writer Rob Houwing, who asked him:

After hoisting the Currie Cup with the Blue Bulls last weekend, were you tempted toward any feeling of “what have I done?” by quitting such a successful franchise?

Yeah, obviously it was a little bit emotional. They’ve been my life for five years; I’d been part of the woodwork. So there was sadness, but at the same time it felt fitting to leave in the fashion I did, winning the cup and helping with two tries. It’s never easy leaving anything successful but I know I’ve made the right decision for me, Bryan … don’t forget I’d made up my mind two and a half months ago. The Bulls has been an unbelievable chapter of (my life); I was saying goodbye to a family. I’m moving on to one of the most beautiful places in the world and something different and exciting.

Is it correct to observe that the Bulls players and fans have generally accepted your decision to go with good grace?

Look, a couple of guys up there might still feel I haven’t made the right decision, but the send-off I’ve had in the last month and the sentiments I’ve received from players and supporters alike have really been amazing. I’ve given everything I could possibly give to the Bulls for five years, and hopefully the memories I’ve left will mean something to them. I think they really respect me as a rugby player, never mind any Bulls or Western Province jersey.

Is it accurate to say that Newlands acquires a player very much at the peak of his powers?

Ja, I said to Rassie (Erasmus) that I’m not coming here to be some sort of “saving grace” that WP might be looking for. There’s guys like Jaque Fourie also coming down so there’s heaps of potential … Province were one high tackle away from getting into a home final, remember. Taking aside my presence, there are strong ingredients in this recipe; Jaque and I will just add to it. It’s been a good year, 2009 … the previous one wasn’t quite what I was looking for by my standards, I guess. With the help of the guys I’ve had around me over the last 16 months or so I’ve been able to find myself again and I’m enjoying my rugby. I want to make a difference here.

There’s a lobby who may always contend that, considering your talents, you are occasionally “wasted” out on the left wing: with Rassie Erasmus not afraid of positional experimentation, might you be seen sometimes in other spots on the park for the Stormers and WP?

I don’t think the plan for me will change too much. There are a lot of fantastic players in various positions here – you’ve got a guy like Fabian Juries having signed up. I believe he was one of the exciting finds of the Currie Cup, even if he’s a little bit older. Jaque Fourie is probably the best centre in the world at the moment, and Juan de Jongh was most promising player of the year. Joe Pietersen had a great Currie Cup and was highly recommended as player of the year. So I’m here to lend as much experience and know-how as I can; help some youngsters. I believe that someone like Dewaldt Duvenage is in the same sort of mould as Fourie du Preez and given the right mentoring can become one of the best scrumhalves in the country and world. So there’s lots of potential, but I definitely see myself personally as a wing at the moment. Hopefully my work-rate both on and off the field really assists players in other positions.

If you had to choose one team as main stumbling block to the Stormers in 2010, would it still be the Bulls?

(Laughter) Yeah, it’s going to be tough playing them at Newlands in the Super 14! But the Stormers showed at Loftus in this year’s competition, with a great performance by Luke Watson, that they’ve really overcome any mindset issues by only losing by four points to a full-strength Bulls at a packed stadium. Of course they showed in the Currie Cup what they are capable of, too. But any team in the world is going to find it difficult playing the Bulls … ask the Chiefs in the 2009 final. But the Province-Bulls sort of rivalry goes back decades, so it’s not a special stumbling block, even if the Bulls are probably the best rugby team in the world at the moment.

Does the favourable Super 14 draw for the Stormers, with the extra home match and shorter tour next year, give you extra hope they’ll be semi-finalists?

You don’t want to (jump the gun). I’ve learnt through past experience in Super rugby that you can’t look beyond your next game. Let’s first get into camp in December and see how it goes … I’ve first got to meet up with all the players. I’m coming here as an uncapped Province player, the ‘newby’: even Juan de Jongh has 20-odd more Currie Cup caps! I’ve got to learn to be a part of this set-up and embrace this culture. Whether the draw is favourable or unfavourable … I mean, the Bulls have won the title off two unfavourable draws. It emphasises my game-for-game point.

Was there any feeling of “new respect” in the Bulls dressing room after Province had come so close in the Currie Cup semi?

Definitely. The guys’ bodies were certainly a bit sore and we were really happy about having that extra week off before the final against the Cheetahs. Province really ran out that day and proved their worth. They showed, for instance, that that old “softest tight five in the country” (label) was really not the case at all. A lot of respect was given and, like I said, Province were one high tackle away from the final. They’re developing a great squad, with some nice signings, if you throw in young Lionel Cronje from the Free State as well. It’s a good mix.

From a lifestyle point of view, what will be the biggest impact on you in terms of adjustment to Cape Town culture?

I suppose getting to grips with the weather! A little bit wetter and colder than the Highveld. But it’s an amazing, cosmopolitan city, one of the nicest on the planet on a great day. You don’t get much better. I’ll probably miss the thunderstorms and the quick, 45-minute rain showers up north … but there have got to be reasons so many international people set up homes in Cape Town. It’s a vibrant and happening place, and we’re very excited about the switch.

The Stormers change their management side and will keep the same coaches compare what they had in the CC. Allistair Coetzee will be head coach, Flekkie the backline coach & Proudfoot the forwards. I expect Proudfoot to take the CC coaching position.

Stormers site
WP Senior Professional Coach, Rassie Erasmus, today released the 2010 Vodacom Stormers Management team.

The structure sees the successful WP management team utilised in the 2009 Absa Currie Cup retained for the 2010 Vodacom Super 14 season, with Allister Coetzee continuing as Head Coach, Robbie Fleck as Backline Coach and Matthew Proudfoot as Forwards Coach.

Erasmus continues to fulfill the role of a “hands on” Senior Professional Coach, responsible for team strategy, tactics and player recruitment. Focus will be long term and global, ensuring positive momentum, culture and structures are retained at all levels in WP. Erasmus will remain “hands on” from a senior team coaching viewpoint and remains responsible for team tactics and game plans.

Allister Coetzee’s role will continue to be control of day-to-day playing issues and man-management, for the senior professional team. Coetzee will be responsible for daily training and preparing the team for play, with the approval of Erasmus.

The new structure was used during the 2009 Currie Cup campaign, is based on the model successfully utilized in most Premiership football sides and has been approved by WP Rugby, Boland Rugby and the Stormers Governing Body.

The balance of the management structure is:

Management Position Name
Senior Professional Coach Rassie Erasmus
Head Coach Allister Coetzee
Backline Coach Robbie Fleck
Forwards Coach Matthew Proudfoot
Defence Coach Jacques Nienaber

"Ricky just missed out on the Boks' end of year tour and he hasn't played a lot of rugby this year. But he remains a big part of our plans for next year along with guys like Dewaldt Duvenage and Bolla Conradie."

Meanwhile, Erasmus also confirmed that Eastern Province loose-forward Jaques Potgieter is on trial with the Cape franchise while Boland's Argentinian prop recruit, Eusebio Guinazu, will also be in the Stormers' pre-season mix.

Everything look on track at the moment in Stormers land. Look like Peter Grant will play in 12 from the start. This open up the 10 jersey. Willem de Waal will start but watch the youngster Lionel Cronje grabing his change in the 10 jersey. He is quite a talent, played for SA U20s flyhalf and exciting to watch.

SA have quite a few promising youngsters going through their structures in the 10 position.
