I didn't think he was too bad. Sure he made some incorrect and at times totally mystifying calls (not helped by the fact that he seemed to boycott the use of signals after he gave a penalty), but overall the game flowed pretty well, and was not bogged down by too many penalties. That is enough for a pass mark from me.

That first 20 minutes was frustrating, as he only reffed one team. Apart from the missed knock ons (from both teams) he improved a bit after that.

One of the most frustrating Bryce Lawrence penalties missed was Hynes on Monye (I think), right before the first England penalty to take them to 6-0 after the cross field kick. Monye was blatantly holding on right in front of the ref, who just stood, watched, and shrugged his shoulders.

He's dead right. The crowd was reffing that game for the first 40 minutes.

Jones makes a good point every now and then:

Wilkinson dropped his early goal, he kicked a penalty when a ridiculous nanny decision by the referee saw Peter Hynes penalised for a dangerous tackle on Ugo Monye.

England were also helped by referee Bryce Lawrence’s assault on Australia at the breakdown and, most bizarrely of all, by the fact that he allowed England to knock-on blatantly three times in the second half. At least that allowed England to keep some kind of pressure going.

I never thought I'd read that..

Jones was far, far more critical of the ref for the Wallabies v Evil game in Hongkong last year. He wrote how the ref had favoured the Evil, starting with "one of the most astonishing assaults ever on an international team by a referee".

We are allowed to criticize the referee if we win. He was abominal. That is all.

There was one in the first half which made me laugh when he pinged one of ours for coming in the side on our dominant ruck ball - our players couldn't get through the gate because their big lump of an 8 was half-kneeling, half-flopped right in the way on our side, which to me was probably the greater of 2 evils. Had he not been there the ball would have already been in Cooper's hands!
Anyway, he was universally poor I thought, and in that regard had no bearing on the match, other than to make me scratch my head.

I think JON must've thrown a flaming turd into the refs convention or something
All year we've been getting fucked by refs at the breakdown and last night was just BLs turn. Kudos to the boys for maintaining composure and winning despite the used franger hanging from our arses

Lawrence is only on the panel because his daddy was the NZRU boss. And his daddy and Paddy O'Brien are best of buds.

SJ hates everything NZ, which explains his (justified) attack on Lawrence and the other idiot, whatsisname, from Hong Kong.

Mark Lawrence? He wasn't too bad, wasn't really a cheater mainly just didn't know when to put a player in the sin bin. But man Bryce Lawrence, I just don't get it. He's such a bad referee. He's horrible. He's dreadful. Any of you catch the B&I Lions test (First one) he was even worse. Someone needs to contaminate his drink or something before a SANZAR meeting, once he's fired the good thing is no other rugby union would want to take him, because it seems Keith Lawrence doesn't speak for everyone.

Alan Lewis http://www.tiscali.co.uk/sport/news/reuters/2008/11/05/australia-to-complain-about-bledisloe-cup-referee.html

That was dreadful. I don't remember any result coming from this complaint. There's obviously little accountability there so you get the refereeing you deserve.

I think Paddy O'Brien should be sacked.

Alan Lewis had no punishment or anything. Paddy O'Brien was a twat. Went around lobbing out red cards just to show everyone that he had them. I honestly think, honestly that some of the Brisbane Premier Grade Refs and the NSW First Grade refs could do a better job then both Mark Lawrence, and Alan Lewis.

Especially the one called Steve Walsh
And I think Mark Lawrence is not too bad usually, Bryce Laurence on the other hand...
