Day 2 Final Update

Steelers beat the Yanks.

The stage is set for a thrilling climax to the Be The Influence Wheelchair Rugby Tri-Nations in Sydney, after Australia shocked the United States in the final pool match on Thursday night.

In front of a packed crowd at St Mary’s Cathedral Square, the Australian Steelers defeated Team USA 64-53 – one of the worst defeats ever suffered by the world number ranked one team.
It was Australia’s first win over the Americans on home soil and just their second victory from the previous 10 clashes between the two bitter rivals. The US defeated Australia 56-43 in the tournament’s opening game on Wednesday.

Be The Influence Wheelchair Rugby Tri-Nations 2013 Gold Medal Match:

Steelers done by the goddamn Goddamns

The United States are the 2013 Be The Influence Wheelchair Rugby Tri-Nations champions after defeating the Australian Steelers 58-54 in the gold medal match in Sydney.

With the stunning St Mary’s Cathedral as the backdrop, the world’s two best teams slugged it out on the purpose-built court as the 2000-strong crowd rode every brutal collision between wheelchairs.
In the end, it was Team USA’s mistake-free brand of wheelchair rugby that proved the difference.
They were clinical with the ball in the dying stages, and never gave the Australians a chance to mount a comeback.

Australian powerhouse Ryley Batt, who was fittingly named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, crossed for 40 goals in the final while Chris Bond contributed Australia’s other 14. Those two players, along with Naz Erdem and Ryan Scott played the entire game for the Aussies.

Earlier in the day, Australia progressed to the gold medal match with a 62-45 victory over New Zealand.
