The adventure of coaching a new Super Rugby franchise has prompted Brad Mooar to leave Christchurch firm Cavell Leitch Law.
The former Christchurch club coach and Canterbury Colts mentor has quit his partnership in long-established Christchurch firm Cavell Leitch Law to join former Crusaders hooker Matt Sexton on the coaching staff at the Southern Kings, the new Super Rugby franchise on South Africa's eastern seaboard.
It's not the traditional pathway to the Super coaching ranks populated by former professional players and few coaches have had day jobs as demanding as Mooar's. The 37-year-old – a property law specialist and an accredited player agent who represents some Super 15 personnel – said he couldn't pass up the opportunity
at Port Elizabeth's Nelson Mandela Stadium.
"I suppose it is a big step in going from a secure profession and job [law] to an environment [rugby coaching] that is pretty volatile.
"I'm certainly well aware of the comments that the only certain thing about a coach is he'll be fired some day!
"But I'm very passionate about coaching. I've loved every minute of it so far."
Sexton will be head coach at the Kings with former first five-eighths Mooar employed as a general skills
coach charged with supervising the kicking game and assisting with attacking strategies.
I'm not familiar with the coaching credentials of Sexton or Mooar but I would have thought the Kings would have sought out the best coach on the planet to ensure they do well and justify their inclusion.
