I personally love both soccer (football) and rugby. If you find the former boring it's because you haven't delved deep enough. Without a doubt it's brought me the biggest joys as a sports fan.

Back on topic. I think a year in the CC will do the Kings some good. As long as the SARU can keep it financially sustainable I see nothing wrong with the promotion/relegation system. It may even become one of the biggest games in the South African rugby calendar.

60 000 people filled the stadium how many watched the Super Rugby final?

R20 is the equivalent of just over NZD $2 and AUD $2. I'm sure crowds would be significantly larger over here if the price of a ticket was $2.

New Zealand doesn't have a rugby stadium that holds 60,000 people so you're not exactly comparing apples with apples.

yeah that was for only a part of the staduim. Kings had the same going on

Tickets for the promotion /relegation game between the Southern Kings and the MTN Lions at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium next week Friday, are now available.

“Once again we have opted to give the best value for money and will be sticking to our standard price range, from R30 to R110 per ticket, as we did for the other super rugby matches,” said acting CEO, Charl Crous.

Crous said aside from the super rugby promotion / relegation game, spectators would also be able to catch the ABSA Currie Cup First Division game between the EP Kings and the Boland Cavaliers, which kicks off at 4:15pm.

“After a tough start to the season the EP Kings will be fighting to try and regain their place at the top of the ABSA Currie Cup first division log, with the hopes of still making it to the promotion / relegation games for a spot in premier division,” he said.

This game will then be followed by the first of two matches against the MTN Lions, which kicks off at 7.10pm. The second match will be played in Johannesburg on Saturday, the 3rd of August, the time is still to be confirmed.

“As for the Super Rugby playoffs, we are aware that it’s do or die and our players are doing everything they can to prepare themselves for what is going to be a titanic clash. But we cannot do this alone.”

“We need the people of the region to once again come out in their numbers and show their support, to stand up and be counted,” he said.

Crous called on people to wear black next week Friday, as a way of showing their support for the Southern Kings.

Tickets are available through Computicket, as well as the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and Boardwalk Ticketing Offices. Gates open at 4pm.

I think the bigger issue with the promotion/relegation match is that it leaves so little time for the winner to assemble a competitive squad for the following Super Rugby season.

Actually not. They have 3 provinces to draw from and their Currie Cup players. The problem for the Kings is that not one of their regions nor them are good enough to compete in the CC premier devision. So they will always have problems assembling players as most of the guys they have are not good enough.

Look here.

Kings are Border, Eastern Province and South Western Districts. See how many schools from that region feature compared to WP and Freestate.

EP got the Franchise base but Border schools produce much more players than EP

Pretty much irrelevant where players went to school, otherwise the Bulls would be languishing CC 1st division.

Also that list is wrong, Kingswood, St Andrews and Craddock are all in Eastern Province (not sure about Dale, but they are in Kingwilliamstown which is on this side of the Ciskei so probably EP), not Border region

Considering the Blue Bulls steam rolled every team last year at Craven Week? Irrelevant don't think so as who pumps money into the rugby schools? The Unions. Bulls use their University as front cover to sign players up and there is the We will make you a Springbok carrot.
http://www.rugby15.co.za/2012/06/list-of-243-springboks-names-who-played-in-the-u18-craven-week/

You will note Chester Williams played for WP league at Craven Week. WP league won the old CC 1st devision as well.

The Eastern Cape is a province created in 1994. EP is a union in the Eastern Cape so is Border. SWD districts is actually in the Western Cape but was given to the Kings.

This was the WP League team of 1990
WP-Liga: Russel Roux; Chester Williams, Avril Williams,
Marthinus Linee, Kelvin Davids; Clark Ellis, Rudolf Paulse (k);
Francois van Wyk, Mornay Visser, Paul Carstens, Jerome Paarwater,
Fritz van Heerden, Marius Werth, Gideon Simons, Peter Bouwer.

Thinus Linee, Chester WIlliams most of those guys later played for WP. They could throw it around and just showed WP depth back then when their so called B team played and win the first devision.

Watson fumes at minnow teams

2013-10-01 10:21

Cape Town - Eastern Province Rugby Union president, Cheeky Watson, is upset at the country's smaller provincial unions who voted against an expanding Currie Cup.

The proposal to expand the Currie Cup Premier Division from six teams to eight next year was not passed during a special general meeting held in Johannesburg on Monday.

The proposal, which was tabled with SARU at the end of the Super Rugby season, was initially presented to the unions at a special general meeting held on September 19, but the vote was delayed until the 30th for further consideration.

While the final vote was in favour of the amended structure of the competition, with a 19/10 split, the motion didn’t carry because it required a 75% majority vote.

Watson, in an interview with the SA Rugbymag website, said five smaller provincial unions voted against the proposal to expand the Currie Cup.

Watson said Boland, Border, SWD, Leopards and Falcons voted against the expansion which would have seen the Pumas and EP join the top flight next year.

Watson was particularly upset at SWD and Border, who are franchise partners to the Kings.

"It shows the problem with the franchise system in South African rugby. Franchise partners add no value. No one knows why they voted that way. Everyone was flabbergasted. There was no reasoning behind their decision," said Watson.

The Pumas - who finished first on the First Division log this year, will take on the last-placed team in the Premier Division (likely to be Griquas) in promotion-relegation matches to try gain promotion to the top flight next year.

Watson also confirmed that Kings will now go ahead and play Super Rugby promotion-relegation games against the last-placed South African Super Rugby team next year.

The Kings were prepared to stay out of Super Rugby for the next two years, provided they gain access to the Currie Cup Premier Division, but with those plans now off the map, they will shift their focus on returning to Super Rugby.

So if I read that right, Watson is annoyed that other unions would not help parachute the Kings into the CC premier division. Whereas the Pumas still have the chance for promotion via the promotion/relegation match, the Kings will have to wait for some other avenue to give them a leg up.

Or they could just come first in First Division, enabling them the chance gain promotion..

The Kings S15 franchise = SWD+Border+EP. SWD & Border voted against the Premier CC to get 2 extra teams. Meaning they dont support Twatson. The Pumas will play for promotion and the EP have to wait for another day after ended 2nd. If they got promoted in the CC they would not have challenge the SA S15 promotion / relegation play offs.
