Yep, not good at all and definitely not what the referee association or zone want to see.
I haven't reviewed any SIRU documents on what requirements there are. The desired qualifications are Level 2 Referee, Assistant Referee and of course SmartRugby.
From what I understand it, the minimum requirements are - SmartRugby (online safety course). Ultimately that's all the qualifications the local members have anyway due to the re-qualification process. It's not easy to maintain referee qualifications.

EDIT, just checked my qualifications, they were updated last year. I reckon other referees would have had theirs done around the same time also.

I would hazard a guess that if RA is shut down till 30 June , then i would also have a guess that SIRU (community rugby anyway) wont get going until mid july. In which case to play a full 18 round first grade comp would have us in mid november starting semis. Even if we did get going in june it would be late october.
The scenario most likely ( and suggested by SIRU somewhere) would be a 9 round home and away followed by 'gala' days or 7's /10's tournaments.
And now Fox sports is pushing the barrow of Phil Kearns to take over RA. Whos running who here ?

I’d be shocked if Siru played rugby this year. Politicians, medical people all saying the situation we’re in will exist for the next 6 months. Rugby Australia should be honest. Community rugby should start planning for 2021. Speaking of RA, looks like Ms Castle might be working from home in a more permanent sense in the near future. What little money RA has left will go towards paying her out. Meanwhile Izzy will probably sign a lucrative deal to come back to play NRL next season.

I think we all concede that rugby in Australia at national/state/community levels is at a very low point. Now that there is a long pause in the game isn’t it an excellent opportunity to get off the train going to nowhere. Most people are keen to blame Raelene-Castle. Not fair. We were travelling on a steep downhill gradient way before Raelene came along. Money distribution, rules, referee interpretation of rules, stop flogging that dead horse otherwise known as Super Rugby, employing NZers as RA CEO and Wallabies coach.

I think blaming castle is simplistic at best - the game has been in a spiral downwards since the second coming of John O'Neill . Sadly the spiral has got quicker of late. How do we fix it ?
Turning inwards is not the answer. Ditching super rugby in its current format , may be the easy answer but not necesarily the right answer. I would be inclined to say super rugby needs a revamp - no south african teams would save a motza for operating costs. When half the games are at 2 in the morning it doesnt inspire the casual fan. More games at friendly TV times (on free to air) will help in many ways . By staying close to the Kiwis, we will expose our teams to better competition than any internal comp ever will. The old super 12 format worked and worked well and could be the future. 5 kiwi sides , 3 aussie and japan and the 3 pacific islands perhaps ?
Either way I'm glad its not on my job description to handle !

Well then why is the internal kiwi competition so much better than ours Bubba? Why are we as a national team/squad regularly paying big money to coax rugby league players over to rugby union? I know both the NRL & the AFL have their own difficulties now because of the Coronavirus but they were both travelling a lot better than us before this situation. To move forward we’ve got to look back. Some things have gone terribly wrong. I mean did we really need 150 people working at rugby head office. Let’s face it - paying Raelene 800K?

I would have thought its pretty obvious why the NPC in New Zealand is better than anything weve tried. Youve already said half of it. The NZRU does not have the monster that is the AFL nor does it have the issue of the NRL. They dont have the A League , they dont have the NBL , they dont have any of the competitors that the game of rugby has here. They dont have the tyranny of distance. They get the best talent because they want to play rugby. They want to be All Blacks. We dont have that. Thats why i am saying turning inwards wont help.
I agree with you , weve spent so much money on league wingers and other duds. Why ?? We have plenty of kids that could have done that without the money we threw at Rogers, Tuqiri , Big Dell etc etc . I agree, what the hell do 150 office people do at North Sydney HQ ? Why was Raelene on 800k ? Why was Ewen McKenzie lost to rugby after the disgraceful behaviour of some our players?

2020 will be remembered in a similar vein to 9/11
We will remember things as "pre" and "post" COVID-19, it really is affecting every aspect of our society.
I doubt any rugby will get played this season, if it is, it'll be a gala day or knockout format at best. For me, it would make sense to have this at a central venue to minimise travel, have a single presentation, recognise the impact etc etc.
If there is time and interest, it may be an option to have an East and a West gala day with the winners playing off for the GF?
Who knows though, and really - there are bigger fish to fry.
On another note, it's good to see the significant decline in new cases being reported, hopefully this is good news for all concerned and we can slowly get back to "normal" life.

SIRU should kick off an online "Jonah Lomu Rugby" (or whatever the latest and greatest is...) Tournament.
Sponsor the teams from their local watering holes and play a round robin tournament. Get the clubs to nominate a club identity to play the game and see what happens.
Possibly even stream the matches? It would be a laugh at least.

What’s the breakdown of money coming out of fees. I mean Athol when a player (junior/senior, his/her) pays fees in the local Siru comp how much goes to the Brumbies. How much goes to RA. How much goes to paying Raeleen’s 800K or the wages of the 150 working out of head office. Izzy’s money. Wallaby & Brumbies salaries. Maybe none of Siru player fees go in these areas. But if any does , it shouldn’t. Local community rugby & Shute Shield seem to going well & probably require the least funding.

Thanks Athol. That explains the rego fee situation. I wasn’t aware of all that. $250 - $400. That’s a fair bit of cash, especially in the current circumstances we’re living in. I don’t have any more idea than anyone else about what might happen re starting Siru comp. Haven’t even heard anything re Super or even Shute. I can’t understand NRL starting. Some bloke got fined a grand for riding a bike at 2:50 am in the morning here in Griffith. With no-one within cooee of him. Let alone hugging 11 other blokes in a scrum. Blokes wrestling each other for 80 minutes then bumping elbows at the end of the game to avoid shaking hands.
The university confirmed last week that Semester 2 classes which were due to commence late July will be taught online.
Obviously due to the pandemic but also a bit of cost cutting going on. I wouldn't write the aggies off yet, well renown for their hunger of beer that might be enough lure them back to Wagga anyway.
It will be an opportunity for SIRU to get creative anyway, maybe a few combined senior/junior gala days to ensure we are not playing when the mercury rises in late October?

From my viewpoint , I'd rather a september finish to the comp. We do have a large amount of farm and agricultural related types in our comp and things start to get a bit hectic at that time of year.

The real proviso is going to be from state and national health bodies and how crowds are going to managed. That will be the real dictator of what the 2020 comp ends up looking like ! And that will not just be rugby it will control how a number of sports are able to be relaunched.

Surely the communications that everyone is waiting on Athol are the actual decisions that have been made by the Siru Board. With clubs attempting to re organise themselves they would be looking to the Siru Board for guidance. I know we are in unprecedented times but it’s being said that Central West are a lot further down the track regarding disseminating specific information in terms of a re start.

I just had a quick look online at central west rugby across their newspapers and up to yesterday there wasn’t a definitive answer on start, format or grand final day.
Honestly, how rubbish are our board. Couldn’t see a pandemic coming and don’t know when it’ll finish. I mean why won’t they listen to the board of 1918 and how they dealt with the Spanish flu.
The zone can’t do anything until the ARU say when they can start. Pointless talking about this stuff until this happens. On a hiding to nothing.
