#SIRU2016 Round Twelve Preview:
Only a few rounds to go now until the finals series gets underway and there is still a bit of a logjam in the positions 4th through 6th on the ladder so plenty to play for over the coming weeks!
Note that there is a double header on at Conolly Park this weekend with the closure of Beres Ellwood Oval.
Ag College (6) v Albury (7)
Six competition points separate these teams leading into this match and Aggies will be keen to take every point they can out of this match as they continue their run for the final five. While Griffith deserved the win last week, Aggies did not deserve the score line. Griffith held Aggies out for an extended period of time with about 15mins to go which is what broke them.
I think this game will actually be pretty tough for both teams; Aggies worked hard for the full 80mins last week and will need to graft it to get round the Steamers forwards in this one on a wet track at CRP #2. The Steamers know how to win in the wet and will play out the full 80mins in this one.
City (5) v Griffith (4) – Match of the Round
Talk about coming down to the wire! These two teams are only separated by one measly competition point (24 and 23pts respectively) and have Aggies sweating on results back on 21 points. All this adds into a big match for both clubs.
City will be pleased to be hosting Griffith this weekend and will not mind the weather at all, it could even be argued that the wet weather suits the majority of their players… While Conolly is always a good surface, ball handling and wet conditions will come into play in this game and the team that can hold onto the ball will likely come out on top.
A highlight for the Blacks from last weekend was their line speed, defensive structure and the way they played out the game. While they probably need to focus for longer periods of the game, when things click for them, they really click and they can break a team’s defensive line easily.
Wagga City have been playing some decent footy in recent weeks also and have had their fair share of wet weather games also in recent weeks which should hold them in good stead for this game. A strong forward pack and a settled scrum have helped them set the tone for the rest of their team.
This stability can be put down to their imported front rowers and a strong tight five who will have to work hard against the large Griffith pack. While Griffith have some big boppers in their forwards, it’s their outside backs that can do the damage and I would suggest that this is where Griffith will look to exploit Wagga City tomorrow.
Regardless of game plans, who’s in or who’s out – this game is an important match for both teams, particularly considering they could be playing each other in three weeks time!
Tumut (2) v Waratahs (1)
Top two would easily be Match of the Round any other day of the year, but there’s too much riding on the City v Griffith game for that to happen. This game is not important in terms of ladder positions, however will be a great indicator of what the finals could look like.
Tumut have been plugging along very well this season and will be happy to take on the soaring Waratahs at a cold, wet and windy Jarrah Park this weekend. No doubt there will be some tough tackling from the Bulls on display here which seems to be the preferred method of play against the ladder leaders at the moment.
Arguably, the pressure is on Waratahs in this match as the vast majority of punters consider them a lay down misère for the GF – will this allow the Bulls to bash them into submission this weekend?
Leeton (3) v CSU (8)
A tough trip on the road for the Reddies out to Leeton #1 Oval this weekend although I’m sure the Reddies will be buoyed by some recent gains in the previous weeks.
