interesting to see hay doing well in 2nd Grade so far this year after SIRU said they couldn't find a place for them in the 3rd Grade Comp
Still can't believe Griffith don't have a 2nd Grade but we won't go there again

#SIRU2015 Round Five Preview:

Tumut (8) v CSU (5)

The Bulls gave Waratahs everything they had last week and that match was the closest match of the competition. I reckon this game will be a lot closer than the average punter would believe. Reddies are improving week in week out and from what I have seen, Tumut are grinding away and working hard all game.

CSU are arguably a more flashy football team that the Bulls, but the never say die attitude that the boy from the hills display will play in their favour this week. A tight game no doubt and decision making from key players will be critical to the outcome of this match.

Ag College (7) v Waratahs (2) – Match of the Round

Note 2:30pm kick off
Aggies Ladies Day combined with their 65th Year Anniversary and the 1979 Premiership reunion will combine for a great social day tomorrow. Shute Shield referee Dom McCarthy is also in town for this match.

Waratahs are a work in progress this year, Coach Mitchell has not had much luck to date or consistency in team which has made a real assessment of Waratahs strength or otherwise very difficult to make. There’s no doubt that Waratahs are a proud club and will always give their best, but where will they end up this year?

Ag College are in the same boat from what I’ve seen, there was some good off-season chat and a positive vibe around the club early on – some would say quietly confident? But, uni hoidays and an inconsistent start to the competition has left them with a lot of work to do at this stage of the season.

Leeton (4) v Temora (10) – 1st Grade Only

Tough times ahead for the Tuskers, injuries have hurt them but I’m sure they’ll give it everything they’ve got this week and into the season. The Phantoms are definitely on the up and are starting to turn some heads early in the season.

Griffith/Hay (3) v Deni – 2nd Grade Only

Coota (11) v Albury (1)

The Steamers are building nicely at the moment and probably have a good opportunity here to work on rotating some players and trying out some different combinations. The Tri-Colours are a tough forward pack and will take it to the Steamers in this facet of play.

City (6) v Young (9)

Both these teams enter this game needing to restore some pride amongst their ranks. The Boiled Lollies will be keen to work as a group in this match and Coach Small will likely be focusing on defence this week while the Yabbies have some off-season hype to live up to.

From where I was on the weekend, City worked well in the loose but had a tough day out against a strong Griffith outfit and need to plug some holes on the edges. Losing James Curgenven early on in the match also stymied their attacking ability, particularly his kicks to relieve pressure.

Brumbies DO Seth Stoltenberg will have his work cut out for himself in his first hit-out against his home town club, is there any bad blood out there for the Yabbies junior?

This Round could sort out the Contenders & the Pretenders;
I'll have a stab at these winners- Albury, Tumut, Leeton, City And Waratahs. The best 2 matches are at Tumut & the Uni
Did Stoltenberg's old man used to play for Leeton ?

Looks like the wheels are falling off a bit at Waratahs - plenty of BIG Name players in their Ranks but they don't seem to be putting in on a regular basis
Reserves were undefeated before last Saturday's big Loss to Ag College ??
When was the last Time Leeton were favourites to beat Waratahs ??

#SIRU2015 Round Six Preview:

CSU (5) v Ag College (7)

Another important game for Ag College this week, and for those punters who keep an eye on the ladder, Aggies could find themselves in 4th spot if they get up over the Reddies tomorrow. Aggies have been slowly improving week in week out but need to start building a more comprehensive performance if they are serious about Premier Division rugby.

Coach Spain’s Red men have been plugging along lately and have been buoyed by the return of some of their tight five players, however will have their work cut out for themselves this week against an Aggies forward pack who played out of their skins last week.

Always a grudge match on campus, this will be a good day of rugby with plenty of banter at Beres Ellwood.

Waratahs (3) v Leeton (2) – Match of the Round

I think this game will be a really solid hit-out, with the best measure of this matchup being both team’s games against Ag College:

Leeton beat Aggies (25-15) in Round One and Tahs lost to Aggies (34-18) last week. The simple mathematician might say that Leeton beat Aggies and Aggies beat Tahs ergo Leeton will beat Tahs. I don’t think it will be as straight forward as that, however do think that there are some key points from those two games to think about here.

The Leeton backline is vastly improved on recent years, particularly through the inside backs which provides their team with more options. Tahs are hurting in this area since the loss of Matt Binks but have plenty of coverage with the likes of Steven Tracey scoring from all over the paddock.

Waratahs forward pack is arguably one of the better forward packs in the competition but are yet to really control a game to date. While the Phantoms forward pack may not be as strong as the Waratahs, they have the ability to grind out a win which has been forged from being the stronger arm of the team for recent years.

It’s still early days in the competition so far but I think this game will be close, there will be plenty of wide running with some strong forward runners through the middle and I reckon this will be a genuinely exciting encounter!

Temora (10) v Griffith/Hay (4) – 1st Grade Only

Tough times at T-Town but should be a good day of rugby. The first grade match will kick off at 2pm followed by the Women’s game at 3:45pm which is a positive initiative from the always thinking Temora Tuskers.

Deni v City (6) – 2nd Grade Only

Albury (1) v Tumut (8)

The Steamers juggernaut will have another chance to bag a scalp at home this weekend but the Bulls won’t lay down easily.

Coach Raynes will tell you that his team are going ok and there are some things they need to work on and he’s right – every team can improve. But, it is impossible to ignore the 271 points differential that the Steamers are enjoying at present, 300 Pts For and 29 Against!

The flip side to that is that the Steamers are yet to face Griffith or Leeton yet and the Blacks have also got a pretty impressive defensive record to dat with only 28 points being put on them in 2015. The Phantoms have the 3rd best defensive record with 46 points against.

Stats can tell you all sorts of things, but what I take from the above is that the Steamers know their way to the try-line and they don’t mind being the dominant defender!

Young (9) v Coota (11)

This is a local grudge match and will be a close fought affair. The Yabbies were competitive against City last week and were arguably dominant in the forwards and maybe some steadier hands at times could have helped their cause. This has been the story for the Yabbies so far this season – they have the ability to stick with the stronger teams but need to be more consistent. Rory Sheard has been playing well for them this year and will be a key component for the Yabbies this week.

It looks as though Seth Stoltenberg isn't in the squad now so who is the Reserve No. 9 ??
Griffith only get 1 player in the squad which looks a bit strange after winning the Comp last year but Latu is their best player
Albury deserve to have the most players in the squad because of their great performances so far this year

I think the Steamers are stoked to have local Juniors Liam Krautz, Ash Lefevre, Sam Allen and Blake Le Cornu come through the ranks and make the SIRU side. The support and experience provided by the other players has been invaluable. Actually looking at the squad overall I would hazard a guess and say most of the squad are players from outside the region in one form or other. And there is no doubting that over the last 4 or 5 years, most clubs within SIRU have embraced players from external sources - whom have added to the quality of rugby played within the region. Having said that, I believe that the number one priority for SIRU should be the re-establishment of the u17 program.

#SIRU2015 Round Seven Preview:

Things are starting to heat up with some crucial match ups over the coming rounds. From 4th to 8th position there are only 6 points separating these teams on the ladder which isn’t much at this stage of the season and will make for some passionate hitouts over the coming weeks.

Leeton (2) v CSU (4)
Who would have thought that the Phantoms would be peering down from these lofty heights last year? Good on them, they’ve done it tough for a number of years and are taking their opportunities with both hands.

CSU have seen a resurgence within their ranks in recent weeks with the return of Sterling Ross providing some extra spark for the team. From what I have seen of Reddies this year, they play well when they are playing for each other and maybe Sterling is the gel that binds?

Griffith (3) v Waratahs (5) – Match of the Round

Two heavyweights pummeling away at each other here this week and two well matched teams to be honest. Griffith have not been bothered by the off-season chat about losing Seru Rogo and Marika Vunibaka but have knuckled down and worked hard together which is yielding good results.

Waratahs have struggled to get their preferred starting XV on the paddock over the past month but have been buoyed by the likes of Corcoran and Armstrong playing well. I hear that the boy Yates has been playing well in 2nds and is putting some pressure on Coach Mitchell to consider him for 1sts.

The Blacks have the ability to play a wide ranging game with solid interchange through the midfield and unleashing some genuine pace in Ben Kurodugu at 15. His ability to maintain his feet after contact is a genuine skill and makes him a very dangerous attacker. This kid is a livewire and won’t be here for long.

The forwards hitout will be great to watch, Daniel Dowson, Chris Latu and Michael Stalley vs Dave Armstrong, Matt Meggison and Hugh Palmer should be a highlight.

I haven’t seen Waratahs run around this year but have seen the Blacks and would say that this game is going to set the scene for the Premier Division later in the year. Both teams are handy but may be at different stages of development at the moment. Griffith are definitely riding high at the moment but Waratahs have potential in their ranks to improve and will need to show the competition that they can improve.

Deni v Temora (10) – No Game (Temora 1st Grade only, Deni 2nd Grade only)

Ag College (7) v Albury (1)

Just shaded for Match of the Round status by Griffith and Waratahs due to the higher ladder position but will be a cracking game of footy for sure.

This is the hitout that Aggies need to show them if they are contenders or pretenders. They have talked the talk for long enough now and need to walk the walk over the coming weeks to make the Premier Division. Individuals within the team are playing well but the group need to start functioning together – maybe take a leaf out of the Waratahs game?

Tumut (9) v Young (8)

Another local derby at Jarrah Park and will be a close fought affair. Tumut and Young will be evenly matched in the forwards and through the inside backs, Young may have a slight edge in their back three. Consistency for both teams will be important as will taking the right options during the game – dry weather footy hasn’t traditionally come easy for these teams.

City (6) v Coota (11)

The Tri-Colours have been plugging along doing their best and are being well supported by Junee in the lower grades which is good to see.

James Curgenven is likely to return to the fold this week in an effort to test his fitness before the Brumbies Provincial Tournament. The City pack has been playing well together in recent weeks and will need to continue this form early on tomorrow.

This year's Comp is pretty congested in the middle of the Table - Albury, Leeton & Griffith will play Premier Division & Young, Coota & Temora will play 1st Division (Romano's Cup).
Who are going to be the 3 other Clubs to make it into the Premier Division & the 2 other Clubs who will join Temora, Coota & Young ??
Looks like we mightn't find out until the last Round of matches are played but the 4 Wagga Clubs and Tumut will be watching each other closelly in the last 5 Rounds

Have a look at the draw on the SIRU site, the teams from 4th to 8th have plenty to play for over the coming weeks.

Chuck rep footy in there as well with the potential for injury to some important players and a rep game during a regular round.

Strap yourselves in folks, it could be a bumpy ride up to the split!
