i doubt george smith would play for anyone but the brumbies
hasnt he signed to play in japan anyway? i doubt his future employers would be happy with the injury risk that is the back end of a s15 and WC
but i also believe that after his long service to aus rugby he should defos be given a call again>>
i am surprised to hear a lack of intrest from george thou after it was suggested he could play for the brumbies a few months ago (dwyers suggestion i believe?)
in a WC year we should put our best team on the park> lets not try be good blokes about this > lets win the fkn thing

It would've been nice if the Brumbies had've been interested to bring him in short term with Faingga and Hooper away for the U20's...

He could provide a bit of onfield leadership for the forwards, and probably would bring in the extra crowd numbers in Canberra...

I'm pretty sure that George Smith putting on a Reds jersey would be the first sign of the apocalypse...

I just saw 4 guys on horses heading east , pretty sure one of them had a reds jersey on....Although I think George pulling on a reds jersey would be like exposing a vampire to sunlight.

Anyway, on a more serious note I don't think it would ever happen, I think Liam Gill will get the chance to make a name for himself. Nice fantasy thought, he would be the ultimate late call up. We've been spoilt with the way Beau Robinson has been performing this year.

I say if he's good enough, pick him.

Just a thought - George Smith - the best Australian player never to have won a world cup? (At least since the thing began)

I doubt he would come back to the Red's if he has already turned down coming back to help his beloved Brumbies... It would be epic though

Well he definatly isn't coming back, as it looks like Liam Gill is coming back. Plus Link said that he isn't going to get a foreign player as it'd take them too long to understand the structure (or something along those lines).

Good chance for Gill to step up, by the looks.

Link has no qualms about short-term recruiting though:

...

The Reds' depth is already being tested in the outside backs with Peter Hynes and Rod Davies on the long-term injury list following knee operations, while he has no specialist back-up to No.7 Beau Robinson without Gill.

McKenzie said any more injuries to wingers or Robinson would leave Queensland exposed in those areas while the under-20s, who go into camp on May 27 and depart for Italy two days later, are off-limits.

The concerns have seen him look overseas for imports interested in short-term contracts, with former English winger Paul Sackey looming as one possibility after being released by French club Toulon.

"If I can get a Test player from somewhere that wants to play six weeks of rugby I'll get one because I'm not going to die in a ditch in a campaign where we've done a lot of hard work and run out of players," McKenzie said on Wednesday.

That article was from almost a month ago... This is from today

"Reds coach Ewen McKenzie yesterday ruled out bringing in a foreign marquee player to plug the gap at openside flanker, arguing that the role he has had Robinson playing is so specialised that no outside No 7 could pick it up in time."

So George Smith wouldn't be good enough then.

Methinks the coach is simply adjusting the words to the circumstances.

It is never going to happen but combining George Smith with Higgers and Samo in the back row is mouth watering.
